Graduate students to have healthcare subsidies

By Andrew Nelson Contributing Writer

The InvesTITure of G.P. Bud PeTerson

G. P. Bud Peterson swears in as the 11th Institute President

Tech has announced that it will be providing $100 a semester to help cover health insurance costs for graduate research and teaching assistants (GRA and GTA respectively) for the fall and spring semesters of the 2009-2010 academic year. Only graduate students that have Techs health insurance policy (under the insurance company Pearce & Pearce Inc.) as their primary health insurance provider will obtain the subsidies while those with health insurance from other companies will not receive any money. The Tech administration is still deliberating on whether the subsidies will extend into future semesters. Annual health care costs for graduate students have been steadily climbing at a linear rate the past few years, from $830 in 2006 to $1,003 in 2009. The subsidy is an attempt to remedy these ongoing increases in living costs faced by graduate students. I think this is a very good thing providing

Greek mens rush numbers drop this year

By Vijai Narayanan Assistant News Editor

Fall rush numbers for men dropped this year, falling to 498 from 553 members last year. The economy was the main reason for this drop, although certain other factors also pointed to this decline. Buck Cooke, the Director of Greek Affairs said, With people having fewer scholarships, student loans, and parents loosing their jobs, this recession has affected campus life in general, particularly the Greek recruitment process. Another reason for the drop in recruitment numbers can be attributed to the rise in number of students waiting until the spring semester or longer to join a Greek organization. Over the years, spring recruitment numbers have been steadily increasing, with over a 100 students joining a Greek organization last fall. Currently, 28 of the 31 Inter-Fraternity Council member organizations participate in spring rush. The rush numbers for multi-cultural organizations nearly doubled this year, as students

Institute President G. P. Bud Peterson spoke to students, alumni and guests, including Governor Sonny Perdue, at his Investiture on Sept. 3. The investiture comes after President Petersons arrival at Tech earlier last spring. The ceremony is used to formally hand over the position of Institute President from the incumbent to its successor. Among the guests were Governor Sonny Perdue, Congressman Phil Gingrey and Board of Regents Chair Robert F. Hatcher. Members of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and Tech alumni were also in attendance with students. Board of Regents Chancellor Errol B. Davis, Jr. began the ceremony by introducing Peterson, who was welcomed with a round of applause. Peterson began his speech by thanking all of his guests on behalf of him and his wife, even making special mention of Techs own George P. Burdell by mentioning, Although I have yet to meet him, I was told he would be here with us today. In his address, Peterson reflected on Techs long history of achievement not only in the field of student and alumni accomplishments, but also the work being done by all involved in the community. He also stressed the sources of pride Tech has in its national rankings, research and other successes. Before I came to Tech I was well aware of its reputation for excellence, but I did not realize what a truly incredible place it really was. I quickly learned of the tremendous impact it has had, and continues to have, on the lives of our students, the states economy and on the larger global community. In just five short months, I have come to share the tremendous pride we all have in this fine institution, said Peterson in his address. We have before us today an opportunity to shape the future of, not only this great institution but also the many students who will pass through its doors in the coming years, Peterson said. Following the investiture ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, Peterson and his administration hosted an inaugural conversation, entitled A Strategic Vision for Georgia Tech. The talk was part of the strategic planning initiative hosted by the office of the President and the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. The committee was established Aug. 24 and is comprised of 75 Tech faculty, students, staff, alumni and other community members. The initiative looks into different ways to improve Techs academic,

An officer was dispatched to the Brown Residence Hall on Aug. 28 to investigate a report of a possibly intoxicated underage female. The complainant directed the officer to the offender who was found to have attended a party earlier that night where she had played beer pong, except with shots of liquor substituted for beer. Grady EMS determined the offender was alert, responsive and in no need of further medical attention.

Also on Aug. 28, an officer no-

ticed a gold Toyota Corolla driving the wrong way on a one-way street near Fifth Street. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, however, the driver leaned out the window, extended two middle fingers, and stated, I am looking for State Street, so Ill just turn around and go there. The suspect then made a Uturn and headed northbound onto West Peachtree Street. The vehicle accelerated, with the officer in pursuit, fish-trailing across three lanes of traffic, disregarding red lights, before running over a sidewalk area where the officers

car blew a tire. The suspect continued one more block whereupon the vehicle rolled to a stop due to the damages it had sustained. At that point, the driver exited the vehicle and threw his keys to the ground. He was subsequently arrested under charges of fleeing and eluding a police officer, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, failure to obey a traffic control device, reckless driving and having no license on his person.
Bad book charges

A supposed fraudulent use of a financial transaction card occurred on Aug. 25 when a complainant claimed that $350 worth of textbooks had been charged to his Buzzcard without his knowledge. He claimed he had possession of the card and did not order the books.

New Japanese govt promises strong alliance California wildf ires viewed from space
The Democratic Party of Japan (DJP) won a resounding victory in elections held last week, ending over half a century of rule by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The countrys economic crisis mobilized disgruntled voters to cast out the LDP. Despite an overwhelming victory, mandate for the new government seems weak. Polls showed that most voters were dissatisfied with years of LDP rule and did not necessarily agree with DJP policy. The DJP won over 300 seats in the countrys 480 seat lower house parliament. Yukio Hatayama, the leader of the DJP and Prime Minister designate, raised concerns about the future of US-Japan relations following an op-ed piece in The New York Times this past weekend. Hatayama suggested that Japan had suffered under US-led globalization and must turn to regional partnerships to strengthen economic ties.

Hatayama moved quickly to clarify his stance by speaking with President Obama over the phone on Wednesday and publicly stating that his comments were not anti-American.

Undergraduate House of Representatives members review bills and issues at this weeks meeting. This edition of Council Clippings covers the UHR and GSS meetings from Sept. 3, 2009. SGA passed a bill disbursing funds to the Student Center Programs Council for Six Flags night. The event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25. Tickets are available online for a price of $13 until Friday, Sept. 11 at www.sixflags.gatech. edu. Six Flags night was started in 2003 as a partnership between SGA and the administration in an effort to hold large campus events. In its first year, 7250 campus community members attended the event. Attendance is expected to be around 10,000 this year. The resolution passed 43-0.
Six Flags Night SGA Week Campus Welcome Back Event

UHR considered a bill to fund hand sanitizer bottles for distribution at SGA week. The purpose of the bill was to increase awareness of SGA on campus and help combat the H1N1 virus. The bill was dealt a blow following one representatives revelation that most hand sanitizer combats bacterial diseases and would do little against the H1N1 virus. This led to a lengthy discussion on whether or not to still fund the bill for the sake of increased publicity and awareness of SGA amongst the student body. Several members made the case against passing the bill purely for publicity reasons, and the bill failed to pass the vote.

SGA looked at a bill to increase funding for the campus welcome back event, held after Institute President G.P. Bud Petersons Investiture on Thursday. The event is open to all members of the campus community. The resolution passed with a vote of 38-3. SGA passed a resolution expressing condolences to the family of Justin Bellmor, a student who passed away on Aug. 26 from complications of a brain aneurysm. Bellmor was a sixth-year CS major from Marietta, GA who was entering his sixth year at Tech. He was employed as a system administrator at the Georgia Tech Information Security Center.

While officials have yet to determine what caused the fire, nearly 219 square miles of the forest have been burned. Since Aug. 26 the fire has destroyed over 60 homes and killed two firefighters.

Federal govt hit Pfizer with billion dollar fine

The drug company Pfizer has been asked to pay $2.3 billion in order to settle federal criminal and civil charges over its Bextra painkiller. The settlement comes after a four year investigation into Pfizers business dealings for sending doctors on vacations and paying for massages in order to get them to prescribe Bextra, a drug which has since been removed due to safety concerns.

SGA Freshman Representative elections begin next Friday

By Andrew Nelson Contributing Writer

Until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, Tech freshmen will be able to apply for candidacy in the Student Government Associations (SGA) freshman representatives elections. The new freshman class will elect four representatives to SGAs undergraduate legislative branch from Sept. 11-16. The elected freshmen representatives serve with 53 other representatives from majors/schools, athletics, co-op participants and the other classes to discuss matters concerning the student bodys welfare. This may include passing resolutions expressing the general opinion on an important subject or determining the allocation of funds to student organizations. This year, the SGAs coffers amount to over $3 million collected as the $118 student activity fee paid by every student upon enrollment about 90% of which is distributed to student clubs and teams for normal operation. Another task of the student representative concerns the remaining 10% of the funds: discussing and voting on studentsubmitted bills. These bills are

Megamod mass email policy revised by SGA and ODOS

By Coby Lu Contributing Writer

The Student Government Association (SGA) has worked to create a new campus e-mail messaging policy, also known as megamod policy. The policy intends to provide students with information regarding student life opportunities on campus while decreasing the amount of mass emails being sent out on a weekly basis. Prior to this there was no standard policy, said SGA undergraduate vice president of communications Cory Boone Previously student organizations that wished to inform other

students of campus and student life-related events and news would request the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) to send an email to students informing them of the occasion. The result was that many students would often log in to cluttered inboxes with emails informing them of events that were not pertinent nor interesting to some of the students. SGA has implemented a new policy regarding these emails as of July 1, 2009. The ODOS now requires that all requests for notifications of events be submitted through a standardized online form. The ODOS will then send a single email each Monday, with expressed a desire to continue Cloughs Tech Promise Program, based on the contribution of alumni and other donors. Although he imparted positive words on the future, Peterson was quick to warn that change and predicting change does not happen quickly or easily, by stressing the question of What if? He emphasized how dynamic change

the exception of school holidays and days that the ODOS are closed, that is an accumulation of all of the requests entitled The Weekly Buzz along with the date that it was sent out. This effectively condenses all student organization announcements that would otherwise come to us as individual emails into one weekly digest, said, undergraduate student body president Alina Staskevicius. In order to submit a request for an event to be added to The Weekly Buzz students can go to the ODOS website and click on the megamod link. After logging into the site with their Tech

accounts, students can fill out a form with information, such as the primary sponsor organization of the event, the name of the event and description, the date, time and location of the event, contact information and options for which week the notification of the event should be sent out. The policy restricts usage of these weekly digests to on-campus opportunities or events that are sponsored by on-campus student organizations. Announcements can be submitted, at latest, by noon the Friday before the Monday the weekly digest is sent out. Furthermore student organizations (except for student governAs we design our future, Peterson said, we will embrace the values that have made Georgia Tech what it is today. While our influence and reputation will increase, the culture upon which our reputation has been built; hard work, curiosity combined with intellectual rigor, collegiality, inclusiveness, and an intense passion for problem solving, will

ing boards) are restricted to one announcement per week and per event, unless they are announcing that the event was cancelled. Organizations are also not allowed to send multiple announcements for events occurring multiple times each semester such as regularly occurring meetings. This new policy is intended to help students by making information on student life opportunities readily accessible while also controlling the number of emails sent out, Boone said. To that end, SGA is accepting any student feedback on its new policy throughout the fall semester. remain steadfast and will serve as our foundation, as we strive to not only define, but to be, the technological research university of the 21st century and to educate the leaders of a technologically driven world.

looking for an alternative option explored all opportunities. Over the long term, these organizations are generally cheaper when compared with IFC and Collegiate Pan-Hellenic Council (CPC) organizations. When you compare the cost of participating in Greek life over several years, it is actually cheaper be in a Greek organization, said IFC president Andrew deRussy,. Another reason for the drop in rush numbers could be due to the lack of competitiveness of the mens GPA when compared with non-Greeks. We recognize that the IFC mens GPA is not as competitive as it once was and we realize that is hurting us, but were taking steps to address that, said deRussy. One of the plans proposed by IFC to boost scholarship is to issue a best practices manual with tips from different chapters to Greek organizations to help them achieve their scholastic goals. Interestingly, the number of women attending recruitment and receiving membership this year increased. The number of women join-

ing a Greek organization is up this year, but weve got to remember that the Freshman class has grown and that the proportion of women has grown as well, Cooke said. With a growing number of women interested in Greek life Tech added a new sorority last year, 20 years after the previous sorority was added. Within the next two to three years, plans are in place to welcome another sorority to campus. Greek Affairs is working with the administration to create more space for Greek organizations on campus. Currently, that is not part of the campus master plan, but were working on that. The Greek area planning committee will meet throughout the semester to see what is feasible, said Cooke. One of the things that Greek Affairs is doing to boost recruitment is to send out surveys to new members and determine what advertising tactics are most useful. They also plan to host focus groups with non-Greek students organizations for suggestions. IFC has also initiated fraternity rush tours that allow students to explore Greek life in a group setting.

Graduate health care subsidies will be provided for research assistants and teaching assistants. The $100 subsidy will only apply to those with the Tech health insurance policy.

Graduate

from page 1

this health subsidy Graduate students get salaries every month for the work they do here at Georgia Tech. However, they are required to have health insurance A lot of times they have to pay for it out of [their own] pockets. With increased tuition, the increased cost of living in Atlanta, [and] the mandatory student fee, all of these increases and costs to graduate students have made it very hard on graduate students to work for Georgia Tech as research and teaching assistants. In order for Georgia Tech to attract the best candidates for graduate school, they need to offer something that is equivalent to what other universities and our peer institutes offer, said graduate student body president Linda Harley. The majority of our peer in-

stitutes pay half if not more than half of the teaching and research assistants health insurance benefits. So in that front, Georgia Tech has been behind the curve for a very long time and only now is becoming more in line with what our peer institutes are doing. Such an example would be John Hopkins paying 100% of the health care costs of its graduate research students. With the rash of impending budget cuts, it might seem surprising that Tech is increasing its spending. The funds used the supplement the cost of health insurance for GRAs and GTAs were obtained from the Georgia Tech Foundation. There were no state funds used. It is state funds that are subject to the current cuts, said, Vice Provost for graduate and undergraduate studies Ray Vito.

Its not money that is going to have any noticeable effects, certainly not for [non graduate] students at Georgia Tech. It was a long hard decision because there certainly are fewer resources this year but nothing critical is not going to get done because of these subsidies, Vito said. Vito also elaborated on longterm plans that will help reduce costs for graduate students even further. The plan would be eventually to build some of these [health insurance] costs into grants and contracts for GRAs, but that will take several years to happen. It is a legitimate cost of hiring a graduate student [since] the health insurance has to be paid for, so it seems to me if the student is supported on a grant then the grant at some point should be helping the students pay for their health insurance.

suggestions to the SGA via their representatives. Furthermore, if the representatives choose to sit on SGA committees, freshmen have an additional link to affecting policies in those committees spheres like campus transportation, development of off-campus areas and academic affairs. A good representative, Donohue said, is one who is eager to help his or her constituents, is willing to creatively find solutions to problems and is able to effectively communicate his or her positions to other representatives. Freshmen still have time to more to apply as a candidate to represent the class of 2013. All applications are due by Friday, Sept. 4 to the SGA office in the Student Center Commons across from Einsteins Bagels. I can offer this advice to can-

didates: think outside the box, Donohue said. We have a fairly flexible set of rules in which you can work, so be creative with the ways you get your name out. Come out with one or two things you really want to do in SGA, and make that the cornerstone of your campaign. And dont give up, Donohue said. After the week-long campaigning ends, students vote in their 53 representatives Sept. 11-16 at elections.gatech.edu. Having freshman representatives elected by freshmen is a brand new thing for Tech, so this group of representatives is going to set the tone for years to come. I think that these representatives have an amazing chance to really help communicate to their class what SGA does and help their classmates to take advantage of everything that SGA can offer, Donohue said.

While we are excited to see modifications to the megamod policy finally enacted, there are still ways that the megamods could be improved. Since megamods will now only be sent out once a week on Mondays, the emails have the potential to grow to ridiculous lengths. We hope that the Dean will have the foresight to imitate twitter and have a character (or at least word) limit. If we are not careful, the megamods will be so long that no one will attempt to read them, which would defeat the megamod purpose of disseminating information. In order to help prevent this, the layout of megamods should be as readable as possible. There needs to be a clear delineation between entries so they do not blend together. The entries should have parallel structure with only plain text and not images. Perhaps most importantly, all announcements on the megamods should be content rich and straight to the point. It is not necessary to announce your event with seven exclamation points and three colors. You can editorialize your announcement in other av-

enues, like chalking. Just give the basics and a link to a website with more details. We are also disappointed that the opt inopt out policy was overturned by SGA last Spring. We liked the idea of being able to filter topics and receive a customized megamod. Students would be more likely to read the important announcements on megamods if they knew that announcements about organizations they are not interested in hearing from could be opted out of. By allowing students to choose what megamods come their way, Tech would provide students a sense of control over their inboxes. Now that this megamod policy is in place, we hope that this policy will be permanent for the immediate future. If the policy is constantly updated, we will never know if the students are satisfied by the current policy. If the policy is not given a fair chance, it will feel as though promises are being made and then taken away. We hope that with this policy, this is not the case.

The article Gun Control Debate Continues raised a number of interesting points, including the deterrent value of concealed weapons, the safety of other students and the defensive use of firearms. I would like to add my own two cents to the debate. There is considerable evidence documented by John Lott at Yale and Gary Kleck at Florida State that liberalizing concealed carry laws reduced violent crime by varying amounts8.5% reduced murder, 5% reduced rape, etc (see More Guns Less Crime by John Lott and Kleck, 1997). These same studies indicate that the rate of violent crimes committed by permit holders was well below that of the average population, suggesting that permit holders are less likely than people drawn from the average population to commit violent crime. Gary Klecks own survey suggests that defensive gun use is much closer to 800,000 times annually and a Department of Justice survey (Guns in America: National Survey on Private Ownership and Use of Firearms 1994) suggested that defensive gun use is on the order of 1.5 million times annually. I wonder if GT students are aware that the police have no legal obligation to protect them? Courts have repeatedly held that police cannot be held responsible for failing to protect someone from harm, even if they appear to be negligent in their duties. Tech police are not obligated to protect any individual on campus, nor can they be held responsible for failing to do so. According to virtually every court in this country, people are responsible for defending themselves. So, if you dont want to hope that the police feel like protecting you (in at least one case I cited, a 911 call to the police was not answered for 45 min resulting in a womans death) then get a concealed weapons permit and some training and protect yourself. No one else will. Brady Aydelotte MSE Grad

GFL holders on campus

As a holder of a Georgia Firearms License (GFL) and someone who lawfully carries a firearm for protection wherever he goes (where legal, of course), I just wanted to address some points in the recent article titled Gun Control Debate Continues. The gun control mantra for years has been that gun violence can be reduced by legislating on firearms. The major weakness of this approach, of course, is that only the law-abiding choose to obey these laws. As a graduate student I have a lot to lose, and a felony for possessing a firearm on campus would be career-ending for me. This is the case for all lawabiding people on campus. Crim-

Tech students adapt their social scene to H1N1 precautions

inals, however, really dont care about laws and gun-free zones. In fact, to them a gun-free zone is equivalent to victim-rich zone. An undergraduate student in the article was quoted as saying, I just wouldnt feel safe with guns on campus. The problem here is, like an ostrich with its head in the sand, this student only feels safe not knowing about the guns already on campus in the hands of criminals. Her fear should rationally be of these criminals, not of the tools carried by lawfully licensed GFL holders to protect themselves and others from said criminals. On the idea of licensed GFL holders, someone with enough motivation to acquire a GFL also has the skills and training to handle firearms safely and use them competently. Taking responsibility for ones own safety and that of their loved ones holds great gravity and is something few take lightly. Any abuse of this responsibility is punished. This brings me to my next point. The article quotes the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence with a statistic pointing out the small percentage of gun deaths that are ruled as justifiable homicides. This is such a dubious and misleading statistic in that it ignores that fact that most defensive firearm uses do not even involve shots being fired. To understand this, you have to take a quick look at the criminal state of mind. They do not want to deal with an armed citizen and risk their own lives. As for specifically banning guns on campus, firearms can already be concealed on public campuses in Utah by properly licensed individuals. Why havent we heard of the horror stories from there? Because there are none. As someone who was legally approved by a judge to obtain a GFL, abides by the law, and takes his own safety very seriously, what exactly changes when I cross that 1000 ft barrier around campus property? The answer is nothing, except that now I have to disarm myself and be prepared to be a victim. Jonathan Maikisch ECE Grad

Be considerate to sick classmates

For good reason, no one wants to get sick, especially in a time when a national pandemic such as H1N1 is affecting thousands of college students across the United States. Thus this morning when I woke up with a bad headache, a strong cough and a flushed face, the words swine flu were the first to pop into my head. After a call to the Stamps Health Services Center and waiting for the fever to break, it was simple to ascertain that it was nothing more than a bad cold. However, at that point, the damage had been done. My strained, groggy voice and disheveled appearance was enough to signal the immediate label SICK like it was stamped across directly against my forehead. From then on out, my day became a pattern of anxious glares and self defenses every time I coughed. Each mention of Im sick caused people to dart away, followed by my own swift yell of I dont have swine flu. Its just a cold! The feeling was horrendous. Just because someone has a cough doesnt mean you have to run from her as though she has the black plague. For victims with only the common cold or even sinus problems, its been a hard time

to get better when consistently being classified as someone with H1N1. One of my friends who has a respiratory problem got pulled out and asked to leave class for fear of swine flu. Even for those with swine flu, people around them should be treating them with the same consideration as normal, instead of reducing the ill to the topic of silly gossip stories . Ive heard countless gossipy asides like, Did you hear a whole floor of Delta Delta Deltas have swine flu after going out on Saturday night? Its hard enough to be sick, whether its an allergic reaction or the flu. Being treated like a walking and talking hazardous material feels even worse and definitely does not make the situation better. In the worst case of poor H1N1-related manners Ive heard, a girl in a blue mask is riding down 5th Street in a golf cart driven by the Health

Services Center to Tech Square. Just as she passes by the baseball stadium, a baseball player exiting sees her. At the sight, he points and yells, SWINE FLU! The street, which is already filled with people walking to class, goes silent as its pedestrians stare wide-eyed at the golf cart passing by. Imagine how that girl felt being isolated in a crowd of people, and being treated like a circus freak just because of one silly mask and one silly virus that is no worse than the common flu. Although I recognize the value of keeping healthy by staying away, doing so to the extent of treating the ill person like a zoo animal is taking precaution too far. It makes sense that no one wants to get sick. In any case, it is the third week of school, and Tech classes are hard enough. However, precaution should not mean a complete lack of respect and good manners. Common courtesy and

consideration should still be extended in any case. After all, this is Georgia Tech, not the Salem Witch Hunt. According to the New York Times, about 60 to 120 million people are projected to have symptoms of the swine flu in the United States alone. Even so, those with mild symptoms (such as all the cases at Tech thus far) are predicted to have a full recovery after a couple days. This is said not to belittle the problem of swine flu, but to allay concerns and jokes. Taking care of oneself by using hand sanitizer, taking vitamin C and keeping healthy is of the utmost importance at this time. Rather, it is to show that we are no different, sick or not sick. Ill be the first to admit that I have joked and teased friends who have or had swine flu. However, now from the other side, I realize that these jokes are terribly immature, and reduce the morale of even those without H1N1. Truly, if it were the tormenters who were afflicted by swine flu or any other kind of sickness, they would not necessarily appreciate being the subject of H1N1 jokes. After all, with 50% of Techs student population being projected to have or have had swine flu by October, karma can come back and give anyone a taste of the swine flu.

There is a program at Tech for you

Growing up, my parents told me that I could be anything that I want to be. Flash forward to my college career, and I have reached the sad reality that its just not true. I cannot do absolutely everything that I want to do, and Tech had no problems letting me know that very quickly. The influx of freshmen on campus always brings me back to my own days when I was nave enough to still believe that I could do anything that I set my mind to at this school. And it makes me think back to when I had my entire life set on one specific major at Tech. I knew, almost as certainly as that I wanted to be a Yellow Jacket, that for the rest of my life I was going to be an architect. From the age of 12 on, I was set that I was going to be a fantastic architect that would love every minute of my career. I just knew that I would be a great architect. I mean, I really wanted to be an architect so the talent would be there, right? Then the realities of the College of Architecture set in. My studio instructors had no qualms about letting me know the status of my mediocre design ability, yet I still pushed through the program. Perhaps I thought some of the other students knack for designing beautiful spaces would rub off on me and I would somehow be as good as them or maybe one day I

would discover some hidden talents that I had yet to tap into. No such luck, and it was becoming painfully obvious that my talents were much better suited at other things. I belonged in a different program. However, I was so determined that I had set my path in life that I thought it would be embarrassing if I quit. After many conversations with parents and friends, I finally had a revelation that I would not be happy with this career choice and moved on to a major that better suited my skills. But yet again I still felt that I did not belong in that program either and just recently changed my major in the summer after my third year. Thats right, my third year. If anyone would have told me that I was going to change my major twice at Tech, I would have told them that they were crazy. But really the only crazy thing is that it took those two different majors to help me decide what I really

major so many times; however, I do regret that I did not have an open mind when I came to Tech. I put myself in one category thinking that I was set for life, and I never should have done that. I should have researched Kate Comstock more colleges to see what else Focus Editor I was interested in pursuing. Perhaps then I would have had a less difficult time finding want to do with my career at where I should focus my studTech. My change of majors ies at Tech. So freshmen, this is my plea helped me find my home, if you will, and now I know that to you: keep your mind open I am in a situation that makes when it comes to your path of me feel like I am using all the education at Tech. HOT or NOT
It is finally time for football season to start up again. After an exciting season culminating in Techs defeat of Georgia, we have high hopes for an even better season. Added bonus: football games mean the start of tailgating complete with hot dogs and corn hole again as well, so get out your game day gold and get ready for Techs first win against Jacksonville State.

While students have been thrilled to play in the Campanile fountain since the start of the semester, the library fountain has stayed conspicuously dry. While it can be speculated that the fountain stays empty due to the construction of the Clough building, it is sad to see the empty fountain and remember past years when people would layout in the fountain with lawn chairs.

The investiture ceremony for President Peterson officiated the start of President Petersons term at Tech. The investiture marked the start of a new direction for Tech in the coming years. Peterson is now without any doubt is the new leader on campus. Plus, with everyone missing class for illness lately, it is nice to have a positive reason to be out of class for once.

Students using GTwpa have been frustrated by the spotty coverage around campus. As Tech students lifeblood is the internet, it is exacerbating to have it disappear midway through trying to do something. Walking along the Tech campus with all the trees, green space, sporting facilities and housing one often forgets that you are in the heart of Atlanta. Being a campus located in a metropolitan city presents itself with unique challenges. With the decline of the economy, crime has become an increased concern for both parents and students. Having lived in Atlanta and worked at Tech for ten years, I thought I would talk about some practical safety tips that I try to every day. Clean Car Campaign According to the Atlanta Police Department (APD) the two predominant incidents in Zone 5 are panhandling and larcenies from autos. The Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) has partnered with the APD and launched the Clean Car Campaign. By removing all valuables from your car, such as iphones, computers, change, jackets, bags, etc. you reduce the odds of your car being illegally entered by nearly 95%. Duty as a Tech Citizen If you live, work or play at Tech you are one of its citizens, and as such we all have a responsibility to one another. Therefore, if you see something that does not look right, it is your responsibility and right to contact the GTPD (4-2500) immediately. If it is an emergency though, call 911 immediately and they will route you through. Be Aware of Surroundings Criminals look for easy targets, such as those not paying attention to where they are and what is going on around them. Being distracted can mark you as a potential victim. When walking alone at night, take out the ipod ear-

Graduate Student Body President phones, end the cell phone conversation, walk upright and with determination and pay attention to where you are going and what is around you. At your car, simply taking a moment to look around and see what is going on can deter a criminal from attacking you. Be mindful of what you see and what you do. Appreciate GTPD They are here to protect and serve. Lock your doors Lock your car doors. If you feel unsafe in any room, lock the door. Do not open the door to strangers. Do not keep front doors to buildings propped open after hours. Best defense is a good offense There is safety in numbers. If you need to be out on the streets at night, make sure you walk with a group of people. If you want to go out at night, plan on going to events that draw large crowds, such as a football game or the movie theaters. Make some noise! Carry a whistle, pepper spray or a personal alarm with you at all times. Personal alarms will emanate noise and let everyone in the vicinity know that you need help. Criminals rarely want to be seen and will run away once you start making a noise. Dont leave belongings alone First of all, this is a sure way to loose your laptops and other belongings. Secondly, by leaving your bag unattended, you only raise suspicion. No one knows what is in your bag, and one should always assume the worst and call GTPD to come check it out. Ride Home Need a ride home to Home Park or Centennial Place after 6pm and before 6:30am? No problem, Parking and Transportation has launched a pilot program this fall semester where you can purchase a 5 ride or 10 ride voucher for $4/ride. The Stingerette will pick you up anywhere on campus and deliver you directly to your front door. Report Problems Have you noticed a street lamppost that is out? Call the telephone number indicated on it. Facilities will come out and replace the lamp right away. Notice any other safety problems on campus, then notify GTPD SGA immediately so that it can be addressed. These are all practical tips that we can each practice everyday to make Tech a safer environment. I hope you will join me in raising safety awareness and sharing this information with your peers.

RAMADAN
Muslims wake up early to eat the pre-dawn meal called Suhoor, which is usually heavy to avoid weakness during the fast. After Maghrib, they break their fast with the meal called Iftar which is usually a social event. Muslims often go to the mosque to pray and break their fast together at Iftar. Food at Iftar includes dates, Chai, Noon, Paneer, fresh herbs, and halva. The mosque nearest Tech, AlFarooq Masjid, which is located off of 14th Street, offers free Iftars for the community. A date is typically the first food eaten at Iftar to break the fast. One purpose of Ramadan is to bring one a raised awareness and closeness to God. As Maha Hosain, President of the Muslim Students Association (MSA), said, It makes

the next year, Farooqui said. In this spirit of generosity toward those less fortunate, the MSA hosts a Fast-A-Thon during Ramadan to raise money for a cause. This year, donations went to Grady Memorial Hospital, a hospital that often provides medical care for those without insurance, and is facing financial trouble. Hosain explained that both Muslim and non-Muslim students were encouraged to pledge to fast in order to raise money. We suggested that members ask non-Muslims to pledge to fast. Pledging was open to everyone, Hosain said. This year, we had 75 pledges, and so far weve had 3 companies agree to donate $2 per pledge. But, Hosain said, we plan to keep contacting companies to donate based on the pledges we had. Hosain also explained that the Fast-A-Thon was not hosted by just the Tech MSA, but was a joint effort with the Muslim Student

This Aug. 22, Muslim students at Tech began their observation of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, by fasting from dawn to sunset. Throughout the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to fast starting at Fajr, the dawn prayer. They may only eat again after Maghrib, the prayer done at sunset. During the Ramadan fast, known as Sawm, they are also forbidden to drink, smoke, or have sex and must avoid cursing and obscene thoughts. If a person were to forget to fast and accidently ingest food they are supposed to immediately spit out the food once they remember.

you want to put all your attention toward God. You want to get together and pray. It reminds you to get your prayers in, then think about school. To some, the sacrifice of fasting on Ramadan helps practice self-discipline and generosity. It is also said to help keep the soul away from harm. As a Muslim you are supposed to ask your neighbor if he has had dinner before you eat, said Farhan Farooqui, a third-year EE in the MSA. The fast helps you feel all the peoples hunger. Its also a reminder to abstain from lying and all other bad behaviors for

Spotlight on: Undergraduate student body president

By Chris Russell Staff Writer

Obama might have had his Hundred Days, but when your terms up after a year, youve got to get stuff done a lot more quickly than that. This past week, Alina Staskevicius, this years Undergraduate Student Body President, spoke with the Technique about her plans for student government and the student body this year, as well as a bit of the personal history of the woman leading Techs student government. Staskevicius, a fourth-year IsyE, is, interestingly enough, not a US citizen. Born in Montreal, shes only been living in Georgia for the past seven years. I went to school up in Woodstock, and I just heard that Georgia Tech was the place you went if you were good with math. I just fell in love with the campus, the environment, and most of all, the balance between the social and the academic, Staskevicius said

when asked how she ended up at Tech. She says that her plans for her years after college arent quite as clear, though. Im still not sure what I want to do with the rest of my life Id like to go into consulting for a couple of years, then come back for my MBA, Staskevicius said. Eventually, Id like end up in hospital management or somewhere else in the health care industry. I wanted to be a doctor for a long time, then I realized I didnt really like blood or biology, so I steered more towards the mathematics route, but I still hope to get back to medicine, Staskevicius said. According to Staskevicius, as undergraduate student body president, she plays two major parts: representing students to the administration and leading the executive branch of the SGA. I have a dual role. The first part is to serve as the main voice of students to the administration. The second part of that is to coordinate the activities of the execu-

tive branch of the student government, said Staskevicius. The other two branches of the SGA, Judicial and the legislative undergraduate house of representatives, are headed up by Zack Higbie and Parker Hancock, respectively. Staskevicius role as the undergraduates voice to the administration involves meetings, meetings and more meetings; often with people students typically have very little interaction with. [I work with] pretty much everyone in the administration. Dean Stein serves as the advisor to student government, so he and I meet on a regular basis, Staskevicius said. This year, with the Strategic Plan, I get to work a lot with the Office of the President, which is very different, but very fun, Staskevicius said. We also deal a lot with Communications and Marketing for communicating with students and off-campus communications

Nine ways to be a consistently annoying Facebook user

By Kuan Tong Contributing Writer

Sometimes its just downright outrageous how people can be behave on the internet. Were all guilty of outrageous behavior, but some of them are so commonly done by people it could be categorized. Here is a list of the most annoying types of people on facebook.
The Vanity Fair

You know that people who think they are SO good looking they feel as if the only way to truly express their outer beauty is through the constant uploading of photos of themselves? Well, its only natural to point out their vain ways, whether its the constant changes of their profile picture, or millions of albums created by them containing photos of their faces and not much else. They are screaming I WANT YOUR ATTENTION or DONT YOU EVER FORGET MY FACE. It is perfectly healthy to feel good about yourself and flaunt confidence, it is just that everyone else who gets your photo notifications have to endure the hardship of putting up with your vain antics.
The Stalker

The stalker typically preys on those that have public profiles or little security on their page. They will sift through your photos, read your status updates, and perhaps even leave a comment on a photo of you, with all the subtlety they can muster. They might even claim that they know you better than you know you, and theyll leave comments on that photo of that haircut you got in 7th grade, reminding you that you were once Simple Plan loving loser, which brings all the more embarrassment and shame down upon you.
The Addict

Sometimes, people forget that they actually have a life in the real world and they simply forget to leave the computer to do some real interactions with people. Hence their 100% presence on Facebook chat 24/7. This is the person that is constantly active on Facebook Chat and knows all of the latest news on your friends via their status updates.
The Emo Kid

the people that will be sure to let you know just how much more educated and cultured they are than you. If you are ever lucky enough to be tagged in one of their notes and you read it, it is quite possible to feel like you have just sat through a four hour lecture about determinism and its effects on modern society mind-sets? And you wonder, as you sit in your room alone, whether your level of intellect will ever match up to theirs in a debate about the purpose of life, and then bury your forehead in your hands, realizing the fact that you are but a speck in the medium known as existence.
The Frequenter

We are probably all guilty of this at some time or another, whether purposes were for that cute girl you happen to spot in your calculus lecture, a friend of a friend who you have spoken to once, or an ex who you might still have feelings for.

These are the type of status updaters who do nothing but post depressing things about their life or express pessimistic views. In fact, sometimes what they post is so disheartening, you begin to feel bad inside about how good (or at least normal) your life is.
The Intellectual

These are the type of people who love to document their everyday activities with a blow-by-blow recount through status updates. Its great. Oh gee, Wendy is brushing her teeth! How wonderful. Oh wait, Wendy is now putting on clothes! Now shes walking to class. Such superfluous information should not be sent to all their friends as a status update. You would have spotted a Frequenter when you visit a profile and their status updates outnumber wall posts from friends.

And what good does it do if you are the person with the most friends on your friends list? If this is an attempt at a popular contest, then you are sadly mistaken. ease had already passed. If the tick bite is discovered within the first thirty days, which is most easily distinguished by a common bulls eye ring, the disease can be wiped from the bloodstream. However, the disease can manifest itself into various tissues after a certain period has passed and then disease is more difficult to cure. The tissues that can be affected usually include connective, brain and heart tissue. Lyme disease has settled in all of the above tissues in Sweeneys case. In the later stages [of the disease], you get arthritis in your joints, cognitive dysfunction, psychiatric problems, heart problems, and you can die from it if you dont treat it, said Sweeney. The problems for Sweeney as a result are not few. The main problem with the diagnosis of Lyme disease is that it is stuck in a dichotomy over its chronic essence. Many in the medical profession state that the disease is not chronic, but Sweeney claims otherwise. Some people dont believe there is a chronic illness with Lyme disease, but Im living proof there is, Sweeney said. As a result of this controversy, the treatment is elusive and difficult to come by. Because of the dichotomy of it being chronic or not, you get screwed out of getting proper treatment, which you have to pay for by yourself, said Sweeney. Since her treatment requires other parties than those covered by her insurance, she and her family are forced to pay for it out of their pockets. As a Tech student, the condition becomes more frustrating. My college experience is not what I thought it would be because of being sick. I devote the time Im feeling healthy to doing schoolwork, whereas most others can work whenever they need to, Sweeney said. Of course, her treatment requires her to excuse herself from class and general schoolwork, and much of the ignorance around Lyme disease does not help. No one has ever heard of what I have here. I get to do a lot of explaining about why I have this thing on my arm. People dont understand why I have to miss out on class. Sweeney continues to outline her predicament, especially over professors who are unwilling to cater to her medical condition. Ive had extreme difficulty with people being able to understand with whats happening. Ive straight up had professors not follow up with ADAPTS policies, Sweeney said. The ADAPTS program (Access Disabled Assistance Programs for Tech Students) exists to enforce Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, both of which are federal mandates to aid students with disabilities and illness. Many know about ADAPTS through the note taking system or through extended exam hours offered for participating students. ADAPTS also provides registration assistance, academic adjustments, special-format textbooks, accessible parking and coordination with faculty to help students cope with special needs. Students catered to by the ADAPTS ser-

The burdens of the average Tech student seem to be great, but most cope with their curriculum sufficiently. However, with the number of sick students on campus climbing daily, health concerns are often replacing academic ones, leaving many students struggling with the choice between attendance and wellness. This choice is not easy, and it is one faced by many students that are experiencing difficult health problems every day. Students with chronic illnesses work not just to complete their schoolwork but also to meet their personal health needs. My spring break my sophomore year I was getting diagnosed with Lyme Disease in North Carolina, said Lyndsay Sweeney, a 4th Year MSE. Lyme disease is caused by a tick bite that could easily go unnoticed. Lyme disease traditionally presents with a red, bulls-eye shaped rash, although there are many atypical presentations of the disease. When Sweeney approached doctors about her condition, which seemed flu-like, they led her in the wrong direction. I went to see upwards of ten doctors before I got diagnosed. Every single one of them said you dont have lyme disease. They said I was a girl who was young and when to hard school and I couldnt deal with it. They said I needed to see a psychiatrist and that it was all in my head. By the time Sweeney was diagnosed, the chance to cure the dis-

I ended up in the hospital, missing out on a test, and the professor wouldnt let me take it. So I had to retroactively drop from the class. Its pushing back my graduating date, with being sick and professors not willing to cooperate, Sweeney said. Students with medical or personal emergencies such as car accidents can work with the Dean of Students to contact professors to verify absences. Students can call the Dean of Students office or fill out a request for assistance form found at www.deanofstudents.gatech. edu for assistance Though her sickness is a hindrance to her academic career, Sweeney has adapted to her life with Lyme disease. travenous (IV) medication and drives to South Carolina to receive treatment and further diagnose her condition. She has also turned this setback in her life into a positive cause. If I can prevent any other person to go through what I went through, thatll make me happy. I work with advocacy groups and awareness groups, and try to get funding to make those things happen. Sweeney has advice for other students with chronic illness at Tech. Just know that other people are out there with similar situations, even if you think youre the only one without it. Just stay positive about it, because thatll make it all go a lot smoother, said Sweeney. For more information about Lyme Disease, visit lymediseaseassociation.org, ilads.org and underourskin.com.

as well. We work a lot with Student Affairs in general, and some with Auxiliary Services, mostly for when student government wants to make changes on campus, Staskevicius said. The Strategic Plan mentioned above is an idea Institute President George P. Bud Peterson initiated shortly after arriving on campus. The goal of the plan is to provide a road map for what Tech is aiming to be in the next 25 years. According to Staskevicius, [The Plan] is being headed by a committee of about 70 members called the Steering Committee. Im one of five students on the Steering Committee. As can be expected, Staskevicius job is a time-consuming one. Its probably more than a fulltime job. Its tough to balance classes with the roles of being student body president, but its well worth it, Staskevicius said. [The important part is that] its fun; I dont think you could do it if you didnt like it, Staskevicius said. When asked about her main responsibilities, Staskevicius said, I mainly try to go to as much class as I possibly can. I also try to stay in touch with the officers, and the executive cabinet. I also meet with various administrators during the day. I probably go to 20, 25, up to 30 meetings a week [Im on] a lot of committees, [and] Im sometimes the sole student on those committees, Staskevicius said.

Staskevicius says that one of the biggest issues she hopes to tackle this year is communication, both between the administration and students, and between students and student government. I think that communication is always one of the key issues, and this year I think its more important than ever, with the new strategic planning process, Staskevicius said. I really want to see student government reaching out to students more, and thats going to start with the new SGA website which were launching in a few weeks, Staskevicius said. SGA will also be working closely with the administration on several academic issues, one of which includes Techs dead week. Staskevicius said, Our dead week policy right now is completely lacking. Thats one of our goals: to implement a new dead week policy by the end of October. Were looking at the idea of reading days, [where we] have two days at the end of dead week when we dont go to class at all, Staskevicius said. Were also looking at re-evaluating our add-drop policy, and seeing how that can better serve students, [as well as] the possibility of moving to trimesters instead of semesters, Staskevicius said. While SGAs budget wont directly be affected by budget cuts (since its funding comes from the student involvement fee that is a default payment all Tech students make as part of their tuition), she does expect to have to confront

the issue over the year. What I think well see is a lot more organizations and even campus departments coming to SGA for funding because their budgets have been cut, Staskevicius said. The first step towards preparing for this budget cut, Staskevicius said, is encouraging student representatives to become more fiscally responsible with the SGA budget. With every change in leadership, there is a change in the way things run, SGA is no exception. This year, were holding our first ever freshman elections (which is a big change from the past), we now have an official vice president of communications, and were also looking at creating an ad hoc committee to analyze how we can improve our finance committee, Staskevicius said. Staskevicius again emphasizes, though, that the biggest change shes pushing for is more student involvement in student government. I want SGA to be open to student opinion. I want students to know who their representatives are, and how they can contact them. Thats my biggest frustration right now, Staskevicius said. In order to achieve that, she encourages everyone to get involved, both in SGA and in campus life. Find something on campus that youre passionate about, and throw yourself into it. Thats the best way to really get into campus life, and thats what youre going to remember about college down the road, much more than what your GPA was.

Associations at Georgia State and Kennesaw State as well. There is one night in Ramadan that is especially important. This night, called Laylat al-Qadr, is believed to be the night that the Quran was revealed to Muhammad. As Hosain said, For those who pray on that night, it is as if they had prayed for 10,000 nights. It isnt known exactly when the night is, it thought to be one of the last odd-numbered nights. Because of this, Muslims often pray extra prayers during these nights. After the last day of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the end of the fast in a holiday called Eid ul-Fitr. On this day Muslims usually

feast and gather at mosques to pray together. Eid is an Arabic word that mean festivity and Fitr means to break the fast. Because of the emphasis on socializing, only a few mosques host Eid, so that there will be a large gathering at each one. Those celebrating the feast are supposed to finish their feasting on the last day of Ramadan and then repeat the Takbir until the start of Eid prayer. The Takbir is the Arabic term for the phrase Allahu Akbar, which is generally translated to mean God is great. This year, the last day of Ramadan is Sept. 19, with Eid following on Sept. 20 or 21. The date of Eid depends on when the moon is sighted.

Legacy students share college decision process

old mom and dad isnt so bad after all? Or maybe you just werent given the choice at all to attend a different school? Some students with legacies had a definite decision to make whether or not to attend Tech. It was a moderately difficult decision to come to Georgia Tech, said Andrew Kim, a thirdyear IsyE major. Actually, my parents didnt put pressure on me at all- I had the choice to come to Tech. My dad went here, and he just told me I had to work pretty hard at this school, Kim said. Other students had somewhat of an easier choice in enrolling to Tech. Devon Clifford, third-year MGT, is a triple legacy. Clifford said, that her resolution was a little bit difficultI wanted to go to an Ivy, or it was University of Georgia or Georgia Tech. Then I decided it was a no brainer to come to here And I think if I chose UGA over Georgia Tech, my parents would have disowned me, said Clifford. My dad gave me a lot of advice about the school. First, to take five years to graduate. He told me a lot about the traditions on campus and to get involved in anything at Tech, said Clifford. Betsy Calender, a first-year IsyE, has a Tech legacy through her uncle. Calender explained she had a challenging decision in choosing Tech. Yes, it was a difficult decision to come here, because I had a lot of choices to decide from, Calender said. I didnt know what I was looking for in colleges, but I ended up coming here. No one in my family pressured me to go to one school or another. The only thing my uncle told me was that Tech is a really hard school. His advice was you can have fun here and work hard, but the work is more important, Calender said. It seems as though with each new school year, more and more legacies are making their way into Tech. Some students with family history at Tech feel as though coming to campus was an easy decision, while others found it rather difficult. For brother and sister Catherine and Chris Chapman, whose father graduated from Tech in 84, the choice was clear that they wanted to attend Tech. [My father] said you can go wherever you want, so long as its Georgia Tech. Tech was really the only place I wanted to go though, said Catherine Chapman, fourhtyear AE. Chris ultimately had a choice of schools but decided to come to Tech because of what Tech offers after graduation. I had a choice but the options after Tech were a whole lot better than other colleges in general, said Chris Chapman, second-year AE. Having a parent, uncle, aunt, or grandparent to exchange college experiences with can lead to further bonding, or it could just be convenient to share similar complaints with. Either way, being part of a Tech legacy makes for an interesting set of experiences that can be shared across generations.

At some point or another, most of us tried our hand at rebelling against our parents. Whether it was ignoring those intolerable rules, staying out way too late on a school night, or pretending to lose track of time and breaking curfew, we all have similar experiences in trying to distance ourselves from our mom and dad. But then college applications roll around, and you start to wonder where you want to go to school. Then it hits youhey, dad got a pretty solid education in Techs Aerospace program or

mom didnt do too bad for herself after doing pre-med at Tech. Many kids end up choosing Tech (or other colleges) based off of legacy, most likely from parents, or even aunts, uncles or grandparents. Currently, one in every five students here on campus has had at least one of his or her parents attend Tech. This sounds like a pretty staggering number, so one has to wonderwhat is causing all of these legacies? Is it the tight leash parents put on their children to go to a school that accepts the HOPE scholarship? How about finally coming to terms and realizing being like dear

OUR TAKE:
By Kristin Hanson Staff Writer

Mass murderer Michael Myers has some unfinished business left over from last years Halloween, including making sure that the girls that survived would never live to see another. Rob Zombie started remaking the Halloween franchise in 2007. The film mimicked the 1978 original by John Carpenter, but with a much more demented twist appropriate for Zombie, who has directed other horror titles such as House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects. Zombies first Halloween remake gave a lot of insight into Michael Myers time in a mental institution after murdering members of his family. The gore was incredibly realistic and, while no remake will ever be better than Carpenters Halloween, it could easily stand alone as a decent film. With Halloween II, however, Zombie completely missed the mark and ruined what credibility he earned with his first remake. The horror imagery in the movie is very realistic and can make anyone squeamish, so at least Zombie has that down. Unfortunately, the acting and the plot overshadow that aspect. Only those looking exclusively for blood-curdling gore will enjoy watching it. The movie starts seconds after the first one ended with Laurie, Annie and Dr. Loomis being rushed to the ER and Michael Myers dead body being driven away by some coroners. While the victims are being stitched up, the coroner van crashes and Myers rises from the dead unscathed. Laurie continues to be haunted by nightmares a year later and is left emotionally unstable, but she is able to accept the idea that Myers is dead and is never coming back despite the body never being found. Meanwhile, Dr. Loomis is stuffing his pockets with money gained by selling a novel about Michaels life and the terrible events that occurred the previous year, without any regard for the feelings of the victims themselves or their families. Though there is some speculation among reporters that Myers could still be out there alive, Dr. Loomis strongly assures everyone that Myers is gone for good. Throughout the movie, Myers has recurring visions of his mother and himself as a child accompanied by a white horse, which at the beginning of the movie is explained as an interpretation of passion and rage in dreams. Level-5s Layton engulfs players in diabolical puzzles

GAMES

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

GENRE: Puzzle CONSOLE: Nintendo DS DEVELOPER: Level-5 RATING: Everyone 10+ RELEASED: August 24, 2009

OUR TAKE:
By Zheng Zheng Contributing Writer

After a year and a half of anticipation since the original, the much belated second installment of Level-5s Professor Layton series on the Nintendo DS, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, finally hit North America this year on Aug. 24. This time, puzzle adventure addicts around the world can assist the gentleman detective Professor Layton and his trusted assistant Luke as they unravel the mysteries behind the murderous Diabolical Box that is said to kill anyone who opens it and gazes upon the contents inside.

Though fans of the series can finally immerse themselves in the secrets of the Diabolical Box, the Japanese version of the same game was actually released roughly two years ago. In fact, the third chapter of the Professor Layton trilogy had already hit stores in Japan at the end of last year. This push-back in the global versus Japanese release dates contributes to several profound characteristics of the game that need to be addressed. The original (and the prequel) Professor Layton and the Curious Village was very well received by the DS community. Though puzzle games are infesting the DS system, the Professor Layton series was a revolutionary novelty that transformed the genre with its unique artworks, superb complimentary audios and fascinating plot twists in the main story. All of this can be rediscovered in Diabolical Box, with improvements found in some places but not everywhere. The graphics of the latest Professor Layton game received no renovation since the last. This is mainly due to the fact that the original Japanese version of the

first and the second game were released within only nine months of one another. However, the unique art style of the series is still present and the overall display is still very visually appealing. Furthermore, the DS was never quite known for its graphic capabilities, and if

Nintendo fans everywhere know but one thing, it would be that its the game play that makes or breaks the games. This is precisely where the Professor Layton series excels. Although the game does implement solving puzzles on the DSs

touch screen, the answer is not always simply multiple choice or the quick touch of a button. Diabolical Box, like its predecessor, fully utilizes the touch-screen capability of the DS system, allowing

players to trace through mazes, drag objects across the screen and circle suspicious parts of rooms. In fact, the game is completely operated through the stylus, a feature rarely seen in DS games. More impressively, the second installment of the series is one of the few games in the DS franchise that actually requires the use of the microphone, a rather neglected function of the gaming device.

The user interface of the game, much like the games graphics, basically remained the same as well. Whether its the starting menu, the in-game menu interface or the option to move around, everything was exactly the same as the original. However, the mini-game section of Diabolical Box did receive enhancement. Completing these addictive side features now brings players in-game rewards that they do not want to miss. Other than that, the puzzle index, mystery

list and story notes sections of the game remain intact with no obvious alterations. One thing to notice, however, is the increased difficulties of the puzzles in Diabolical Box. Where the first installment led players through the storyline in a relatively easy learning curve leading up to the final brainteasers, Diabolical Box keeps the players busy with some rather difficult problems right from the start. While this is nice for hardcore puzzle-solvers, it does prove to be

a turn off for others who might have wanted a simpler diversion. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box guarantees a game play time of at least ten hours. This is just to rush through the main story, not nearly finishing and discovering all the secrets that hide within the game. With an increasing number of puzzles from the original and their increased difficulties, one is sure to spend a good amount of time scratching his or her head solving the conundrums presented at each

opportunity. Overall, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is a superb choice for short-session gaming between work periods. Although Diabolical Box suffers an identity crisis, as very few elements of the game separate itself from the series, it is still an easy gaem to pick up and get involved in. The min-game features encourage quick-play, while the style and increasing difficulty of the challenging puzzels draw players in for the full experience.

Halloween

takes a psychological view, logically because Myers is a mentally disturbed serial killer, but Rob Zombie went about it the wrong way and just made it cheesy. The visions are telling him to find his sister and make them a family again. Apparently, to do this he has to kill his sister. The identity of Myers sister is revealed by Dr. Loomis in his book, and she is terrified and angry at the intrusion. Her emotional downward spiral is shown in detail, leading audience to think that maybe she

isnt so unlike her brother after all. Zombie returns to our original victims when Laurie and friends go to a Halloween party and return to the house to a bathroom covered in blood and Annie bleeding out on the floor. They call 911, but of course at that point its too late and Myers gets rid of the other friend and chases Laurie. The chase ends in an abandoned shack surrounded by police and Myers is killed yet again. Whether he stays dead this time depends on whether Rob Zombie continues slaughtering the franchise.

Typically, a horror movie series will to get wildly changed or diluted as its sequels go on, sometimes culminating in total revamps or resurrections. Not so in the case of the fourth and latest installment of the Final Destination series, which keeps things going in the same predictable way that it has always been done throughout the series. Big horrific accident, premonitions of disaster and a long line of gruesome deaths that play out like a safety inspectors worst nightmare. This addition to the series also introduces a few rather nifty 3D scenes. Once again, moviegoers are treated to a group of young, lifeloving friends who are doing their best to enjoy a day at a NASCARstyle race track. Aside from the main character being the typical sensible nice guy,

theres the arrogant blonde horndog, a fairly sympathetic security guard and a nameless redneck that seems to have been thrown in as an afterthought. Suddenly Nick (Bobby Campo) has a startling vision of the nightmare that would soon follow. This vision creeps him and his friends out to the point of leaving the race, while in the tumult a fairly unremarkable cast of secondary characters follows before the inevitable debris-ridden explosions and carnage. One by one, each of them gets bumped off from some inexplicable list that Death seems to have written up, a concept thats been a constant throughout the series. Aside from a few suspenseful

moments and occasional humor, its pretty much the same movie as the last three no matter how creative they try to get with the death scenes. In that respect, its pretty much only good if you like odd, horrific ways of killing off random movie characters. Another notable point is the 3D technology. As the first movie that Ive seen in 3D outside of a theme park or IMAX theater, the effect is actually engaging at times and there are moments where you may flinch at something suddenly hurtling at you from the screen. Unless you really liked the other three movies in this series or are a fan of horror movies with little substance and lots of blood, The Final Destination is one to avoid.

Runway projects new trends

Project Runway

OUR TAKE:
By Yameen Huq Contributing Writer

Unless you are the stylistic fashionista who adores the world of red carpets, statuesque models and high-end clothes, the chances are slim that you watch Project Runway, or were aware of the shows recent transfer to Lifetime from its previous home at Bravo. The idea of spending an hour watching designers squabble over fabric is enough for most of campus to stop listening. I tuned into this show with the same prejudices and preconceived notions, thinking I was entering a shallow and effeminate world in which the dreams of contestants revolve around apparel that no real person would ever take interest in or want to buy for that matter. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the show, like the few other good reality shows, revolved around human relationships, the struggle for success against doubt and the excitement of victory. Project Runway follows a basic, one-per-episode elimination format for a group of fashion designers. These designers are given one challenge (creativity, red carpet appeal, celebrity requests), which they have one day to prepare. Their creations are then taken to the runway, where a panel judges them on their creativity, utility

and closeness to the prompt. After this judging, the top designer is given immunity in the next challenge and the bottom designer is asked to leave. The opening of this season introduced designers from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, including a neurosurgeon who traded in a life in the medical field for one of art. The challengers were all given the task of making a dress for a red carpet event, receiving 30 minutes to sketch their creation, a $200 shopping spree and two days to complete the dress with a pre-selected model. Tensions ran high during the design process and one contestant buckled and broke down under the pressure, weeping anguished tears of failure. The show fashion advisor and human pick-me-up Tim Gunn eventually comforted him enough to get back into the competition. Other notable contestants during the design phase include one who miscalculated the size of his model and was forced to stitch the dress onto her, sending the model to the runway in what looked like a ghostly night gown. Runway does a pretty good job of picking models that lack the fashionable skeleton-look popular in most of the industry. All of the girls on this show seem to take eating as a priority as opposed to a nuisance. Finally, at the competition, many of the contestants designs were revealed. Since the theme was the creativity and boldness with the red carpet award setting, many of the designers went fullforce in designing something new and original. This ranged from what was referred to as a schizophrenic mix of purple and green to a bizarre 80s groupie ensemble. There were also simple designs which, while lacking creativity, made up for it in elegance.

Ultimately these designs were judged by the panel made up of major designers, the host and a guest judge, which in this case was Lindsay Lohan. The judging was quick yet constructive with many of the judges offering good feedback. For the most part, they avoided falling prey to the sin of pretension and voted off the design that was radical to the point of incoherence. For people who dont religiously follow fashion, this show can provide good moments of drama and insight into the human condition. The contestants benefit and suffer from the fact that they arent reality show caricatures and are people with realistic feelings and goals. The downside to this is it lacks the trashy entertainment value of other reality television shows. If you find this show interesting for the fashion, then youre probably already a long-time fan. However, if youre in the mood for reality television that doesnt result in cheap gimmicks, catfights, or mud wrestling, then this could be an entertaining hour-long look into the competitive world of fashion and art.

Jordin Sparks sophomore album since winning American Idol is by no means a slump. Like her debut album, which wavered between esoteric pop and bland noncommittal fluff expected of an American Idol contestant, the new Battlefield is mostly a standard blend of R&B and pop and only succeeds because of Sparks vocal ability. She delivers rock-solid performances and never wavers nor struggles. Yet for every exceptional performance, there are several more instances of overdramatic, overwrought, off-putting, contrived emotion. Nevertheless, Sparks does not resort to standard, tired runs everyone has heard over and over. It makes the album a little bit fresher and more interesting. Sparks never sounds like she is showing off. She is never self-conscience nor self-involved with her abilities. The more pop-rooted tracks actually fall flat because of Sparks voice. Her voice is too powerful and pure and does not match the instrumentation. She is literally too talented for easily sung songs. Sparks sounds very mature and beyond her years. She does not sound like a teenager and has more control and skill than a lot of pop divas. She never sounds strained and soars without stress. She does not shy away from any vocal challenge and takes it all head on, unlike many of her contemporaries that rely on tricks and magic to sell a song. Sparks sounds like a human, unlike Leona Lewis, who cannot emote without a whine and a hiccup. The latter half of the album is really where the music becomes delightful. The contrived instrumentation of the pop songs falls away and the purity and power of Sparks voice rises above the mud and the mire and moves the listener. The instrumentation becomes standard, pedestrian, and almost bland, but leaves more attention to be paid to Sparks. No Parade is a cross between R&B and pop and could have

been one of those easily forgotten songs from a more forgettable name. However, Sparks is able to infuse the track with the perfect blend of emotion, skill and restraint. Lyrically, it is average; it has no particular insight and should not be examined alone. Let It Rain follows No Parade with good emotion and too much control. However, it is one of the few purely pop songs that work. She is in control while still offering some peculiarity required by pop. Emergency (911) is co-written by Sparks. It is an overproduced mess. It is hard to get a foothold on the song because it moves too quickly but is also too repetitive. The production is great, but it is too much at times. It would seem that this is what is supposed to keep the song moving, but it does not. The song itself sounds like a loop and then ends without consequence. Faith is also co-written by Sparks and is the most understated and simple song on the album. It allows Sparks voice to retain focus and supports it when necessary. The song starts softly and swells to an uplifting, cheery ending. The song itself is a little clich, but it works just fine in context. It might be a little sappy, but as one part to the album, it works. Sparks voice is the most free here, which is very refreshing after an album of control and perfection. Battlefield is not just another American Idol winners shame. It is a solid album by a singer yet to fully develop and find her niche. Even while leaving several stylistic doors open, Sparks is able to own them all. There are weak spots, but there are equally many strong ones. This album is not a showcase of skills but instead is a heartfelt window into an artist.

Magical Ponyo animates unlikely friendship

FILM

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

GENRE: Animation, Fantasy STARRING: Yuria Nara and Hiroki Doi DIRECTOR: Hayao Miyazaki RELEASED: August 14, 2009

OUR TAKE:
By Kenny Phillips Senior Staff Writer

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is the newest film release by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahatas Studio Ghibli, a figurative factory of fantastic animated films. Ponyo, the movies release title in America, definitely cashes in on the fantastic portion of its prodigious pedigree by introducing the audience to a charming tale of love and adventure. Ponyo makes a splash right off as soon as the title character, a cute girl-faced goldfish, appears on screen and follows with a spectacular view of the deep sea as she rides a jellyfish to the vast world of the bright surface. She frolics until trapped in a discarded bottle from which she is rescued by a young boy, Sosuke. After healing Sosukes small scrape, Ponyo and Sosuke become fast friends and share the day together. After this lovely outing to school, Ponyos father, a Nemoesque wizard, retrieves her back to his submarine home. At this point I would say the story basically progresses to a final test of love (as most fairy tales), but I lack the gall to gloss over some of the more interesting instances. Ponyo, having been taken home, develops the ability to manifest herself as young human girl or an

anthropomorphic girl-fish form in addition to a new repertoire of magical powers. These magic powers, which later include the rather odd ability to enlarge objects, allow Ponyo to escape to the surface. During her daring escape, she accidentally triggers an upwelling of the ocean and the life therein, bringing forth immense waves to cover the land and the revival of prehistoric coelacanthiforms. In other words, this film makes a point of taking imagination and presentation to the movie screen with only small concessions to reason. The story is spectacularly creative but a bit puzzling. However, all of those things

are natural in a story like Ponyo. The film exudes elements of a bedtime story: the lovable and varied cast, the fantastic adventures and the fast-paced chase scenes. Everything that makes young children rush to their beds with excitement surrounds Ponyo and Sosuke. Yes, this film was generated for a younger demographic, but I could not see how such a film would need to differ from something like Miyazakis Laputa: Castle in the Sky to be childfriendly until I noticed something special about Ponyo. The matter is, Ponyo continually emits positive exuberance. I was pleasantly stunned by how simple and innocent the emotions

are. I couldnt help but feel as if I was watching a film on par with pure jubilation of the classic Disney animations. Besides my subjective perspective, Ponyo also towers as another testament to Studio Ghiblis talent. The animation and soundtrack are perfectly seamed and present the picturesque setting in wonderful detail. I recall the Peter and the Wolf quality the music took when instrumentally announcing the first appearance of Ponyo. The animation keeps to a high caliber while holding to pastels for a bright look. The cast is also astonishing in holding many talented voice actors: Noah Cyrus (as Ponyo), Frankie Jonas (as Sosuke), Tina Fey (as Sosukes mother Lisa) and even Liam Neeson (as Ponyos father Fujimoto). Not wanting to dismiss the actors so readily, I really must hurry on to the characters. Miyazaki completes another fantastic job of fleshing out the characters of his story. Though there was not much to grasp about Ponyo and Sosuke, they did not feel as two-dimensional as I had expected. Their motivation was simple, but when trying to reach their goals, they each demonstrated ingenuity in solving their problems just as real children (should they have access to magical powers). Besides Sosukes mother Lisa and her all too realistic relationship with her family, the supporting cast did their best to stay noticeable and likeable without becoming distracting. Personally, I think it is fascinating how well Miyazaki can direct his animation to be even less insipid than supporting casts of actual humans in a non-animated movie.

To just be on fire like that, kudos to her, because its a lot of pressure being a freshman and playing in [her] first match, Johnson said. DeMichelis and Hunter notched 13 kills and one ace each, and DeMichelis also had three solo blocks. Stawicka had nine kills, four block assists and a hit percentage of .692. With Georgia out of the way, the Jackets cruised through both of their Saturday games. Tech took down Austin Peay 3-0 and held the Governors below 20 points in all three sets, winning 25-19, 25-18, 25-17. Austin Peay stayed close in the first two sets, but both times Tech was able to pull away late; at one point, the Jackets had a run of nine straight points in the second set. Once again, Mead was the star on offense with a teamhigh 11 kills and 10 digs, and as a team the Jackets recorded four solo blocks and 14 assists while holding the Governors to a .099 hit percentage. The Jackets later faced Mercer in Saturday nights tournament finale and were once again able to complete a sweep, taking down the Bears in three sets 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 to win the Regency Suites Invitational. The Jackets put together several long runs throughout the contest and only allowed the Bears to take the lead once during the match. The Jackets held Mercer to a .103 hit percentage. with 37 kills and 30 digs, adding five service aces and seven block assists along the way as she earned tournament MVP honors and the ACC Player of the Week award. I thought she had an incredible performance. For a freshman, theres a little bit of pressure on her because shes taking so many swingsand for her to come out and play the way she did was really huge for us, Johnson said. The teams veterans were impressive as well. DeMichelis was second on the squad with 33 kills and had a team-high six solo blocks. Tippins led the team with 112 assists and seven aces while adding 22 digs and 10 kills. Stawicka was strong at the net, contributing on 15 blocks (two solo) and hitting a team-high .618 as she recorded 22 kills. McCullers, the new starting libero, finished second to Mead with 26 digs. Meanwhile, Johnson was able to find playing time for the fresh-

Three other rookiesoutside hitter Susan Carlson, middle blocker Annie Czarnecki, and libero Nicki Meyertook the court on Saturday for their first collegiate experience. Weve got to get better on the ball control side. I think we do some things really well on the offensive sidewere really in rhythm. Weve just got to get back to the basics of passing and playing defense, and not have [any] mental lulls, Johnson said. GAMECOCKS

JACKSONVILLE STATE - SEPT. 5 (1:00 PM

The Gamecocks enter the upcoming season after an 8-3 campaign in which they went 6-2 in conference play and improved from a mediocre 2007 season. Much of the credit for the teams success last year is credited to senior quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, who won a national championship with LSU before transferring to Jacksonville State before the 2008 season. Last season Perrilloux threw for 2,298 yards and 19 touchdowns while completing 62.8 percent of his passes; he also rushed for 368 yards and seven touchdowns. However, the Gamecocks star will not play against the Jackets this Saturday because JSU Head Coach Jack Crowe suspended him for a violation of team rules. Instead, sophomore Marques Ivory will get the nod to start under center for the Gamecocks in the opener against Tech. Ivory, who stands at 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, went 30-0 as a starter and won two state titles at Northside High School in Warner Robins, Ga. but saw the field only sparingly as a freshman in 2008. His primary target in the passing game will be someone familiar to Tech fans and playersGreg Smith, who spent his first three years of eligibility with the Jackets and was a reserve A-back last season. JSU enters the 2009 season ranked No. 19 in the FCS Preseason coaches poll and is the favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference this season after finishing last season ranked No. 22 among FCS teams. Last year Tech defeated JSU 41-14 in the teams Thursday night opener. Perrilloux completed 22 of 37 passes and had two touchdowns, but he only passed for 136 yards and threw two interceptions. Leading receiver Maurice Dupree caught nine passes for 39 yards. The Gamecocks were forced to punt six times, and Techs talent on offense proved too much for the JSU defense as the Gamecocks allowed 482 total yards.

The Jackets enter the 2009 season as the preseason No. 15 team in the nation after a 9-4 season that included a share of the ACC Coastal Division title. 19 starters return from the 2008 squad, including every starter on offense, but the Jackets must replace three defensive linemen who were selected in the NFL Draft. Jacksonville State was the first of two Division I-AA teams that the Jackets faced last season. The Jackets rarely used the triple option against the Gamecocks defense, choosing instead to hold back until ACC games began, but they were still able to cruise to a 41-14 opening night victory. B-back Jonathan Dwyer averaged more than ten yards per carry, finishing the game with 112 yards rushing on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns in his first collegiate start. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt completed five of 12 passes for 87 yards and was also productive on the ground, rushing for 60 yards and two scores; he sat out the second half as then-true freshman Jaybo Shaw took over the offense. As was the case all year, the majority of Techs offense came from the ground game, including all six touchdowns. The offense should have little trouble against the Gamecocks defense, and with Ryan Perrilloux forced to sit out the opening game, Techs defense will get to face an offense run by a very inexperienced quarterback. The Jackets will look to build a big first-half lead and allow their reserves to get some playing time late in the game.

CLEMSON - SEPT. 10 (7:30 PM)

Photo by Joey Cerone / Student Publications

Head Coach Dabo Swinney looks to improve on a disappointing 2008 season as he enters his first full season as Clemsons head coach. Swinney took over the job midway through last season and faced the Jackets in his first game, but Tech pulled out a 21-17 victory in Death Valley. The Thursday game will be Clemsons second of the season, four days after their opener against Middle Tennessee State. During the offseason, Swinney oversaw a battle for the starting quarterback job after the departure of senior Cullen Harper. Swinney decided on talented redshirt freshman Kyle Parker over sophomore Willy Korn, which came as somewhat of a surprise because Korn got plenty of playing time last season as Harpers main backup. While Parkers inexperience may be a concern, he will have the luxury of handing the ball off to running back C.J. Spiller and throwing to receiver Jacoby Ford. The two speedsters return for their senior seasons after combining for over 2,500 yards of total offense a year ago. Spiller had to split carries with James Davis last year but still managed to rack up 668 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, and this season he will be the top option in the Tiger backfield. Ford, who averaged almost thirteen yards per catch and caught four touchdowns, takes over as Clemsons top receiver this season after playing behind the most prolific receiver in ACC history in Aaron Kelly. Clemson may be even more dangerous on the other side of the ball, boasting plenty of talent on the defensive line and in the secondary. Ends Ricky Sapp and DaQuan Bowers should form a formidable pass rushing tandem this season; Sapp enters his senior season after leading the team in sacks last year, and Bowersthe top-ranked defensive end prospect in the nation out of high schoolwill be looking to rebound from a disappointing freshman season.

TIGERS

JACKETS

Tech earned a big win last season against the Tigers when they traveled to Death Valley and took down the Tigers 21-17. Then-sophomore free safety Dominique Reese returned an interception for a touchdown, and Josh Nesbitt connected with Demaryius Thomas for a 24-yard touchdown in the final quarter to put the Jackets ahead by the final margin. This year, the Jackets will host the Tigers in the first ACC game for both teams just five days after the Jackets opener against Jacksonville State. The game will serve as Techs white-out game for the 2009 season, a new tradition that began with last seasons home finale against Miami. Head Coach Paul Johnson has been quoted that the team will pass a little bit more than last year, and if so, the Tigers formidable pass rush will serve as a key early test for Techs passing game. Nesbitt, now a senior, can run away from trouble, but he will still need the offensive line to protect him well to be able to make his reads in the passing game. As the line was heavily focused on run blocking last season, adapting to pass protection could be difficult. On the defensive end, the added speed in the Jackets new 4-2-5 scheme should aid them against an offense that will be centered around quick running back C.J. Spiller. Techs priority will likely be to contain Spiller and force the Tigers to win through the air, where they will have to rely on redshirt freshman Kyle Parker. The Jackets secondary was key to last years victory, and the unit will have to be equally good in this years battle for the Jackets to earn their first conference victory.

Washington has taken over as the main backup to junior quarterback Josh Nesbitt after the injury to sophomore Jaybo Shaw. Having redshirted last season, Washington has never thrown a pass in a college game and will be looking to capitalize on any on-field opportunities. Although Paul Johnsons offense differs greatly from his pass-oriented high school experience, Washington is very familiar with running the ball; during high school he rushed for 2,097 yards and 25 touchdowns as a starter. Look for this young quarterback to leverage his athleticism and provide Tech with an explosive option behind Nesbitt.

After sitting out last season as a transfer from Louisville, the redshirt junior will provide Techs offense with an additional threat at the Aback and B-back positions. In two seasons at Louisville, Allen played in all 25 games, rushing for a total of 1,102 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also set a school record for rushing yards in a single game with 275 yards against Middle Tennessee State in 2007. His combination of size and explosiveness, along with his experience at Louisville and in Techs scout team offense while redshirting last season, should make him a dangerous player in the Jackets offense when he takes the field this season.

After getting some on-field experience last season returning kicks and lining up at A-back, Wright comes into the 2009 season as a third running threat for the Jackets. Last season Wright recorded 200 yards on nine kick-return attempts while adding 37 rush yards on four carries. In high school, the 5-foot-8 speedster set a San Antonio city record with 3,374 yards and 45 touchdowns on the ground his senior year, totaling 7,036 career yards and scoring 85 career touchdowns. With several viable options at Aback Wright is unlikely to start, but with his explosive speed he should have a big impact throughout the season.

Bedford has emerged as a contender for a starting job among the interior offensive linemen. An aerospace engineering major who originally walked onto the team in 2006, Bedford spent the 2007 season as a scout team defensive lineman before converting to offensive line shortly before last season began. He is in a position battle for the starting center job against incumbent Dan Voss, who started every game last year but missed spring practice with an injury. Bedford has displayed a strong work ethic throughout practice in the spring and summer, and he stands a strong chance of taking the field on opening day as the starting center.

After three seasons as part of the Tech football program, Hall heads into the 2009 season as the favorite to start at the defensive end position opposite junior Derrick Morgan. Although his playing time was limited in 2007 due to injury, Hall played in every game last season in a reserve role, posting 13 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss on the year. He became a key part of Techs defensive line rotation as the year went on. Hall faces the tough task of replacing departed pass rusher Michael Johnson, a first-team All-ACC end and the teams sack leader with nine. Still, his speed and game experience should help him become a force along Techs defensive line.

With the departure of several key defensive players this past season, particularly among the front four, the Jackets will look to utilize Barnes at defensive tackle to add needed depth and size to the unit. At 6-foot-7 and 341 pounds, Barnes is big enough to play nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme, and his combination of size and agility will give the line a strong presence in the middle as a run stopper. The year he spent as a redshirt allowed him to learn Techs defensive system and adapt to the college game. While Barnes will not be a starter to open the year, he should see playing time early and often in the middle of the Jackets defensive front.

Currently one of three cornerbacks competing for two starting spots along with junior Mario Butler and sophomore Rashaad Reid, Tarrant returned to the Jackets after being suspended for the 2008 season. With a strong performance in training camp, he has thrust himself into contention for a key role in the defense despite the lengthy absence. At six feet and 202 pounds, he has good size for the position to go with good speed and athleticism. Even if Tarrant does not win a starting corner job, he is one of the leading candidates to take over kick and punt return duties for the Jackets this season, both areas in which the team struggled in 2008.

The Jackets switch to a 4-2-5 defensive scheme was partly due to the emergence of Taylor, who is poised to become a leader in the defensive backfield. The Atlanta native made a name for himself as a freshman last year when he forced a fumble in the end zone to secure Techs victory over Florida State. He has emerged as a strong tackler for the Jackets after registering 69 tackles last season, good for second on the team. This season, Taylor will shift to the wolf position, a new hybrid safety-linebacker role created specifically for Taylor to allow the sophomore to utilize his combination of size and athleticism.

Monique Mead goes up to spike the ball at the OKeefe Gymnasium. Mead led the Jackets with 37 kills and 30 digs over the weekend as Tech swept the Regency Suites Invitational.

Three games into the season, the outlook is bright for Tech volleyball as the teams 2009 campaign gets underway. The Jackets went 3-0 on their opening weekend, defeating Georgia in an exciting five-set Friday night contest and sweeping Austin Peay and Mercer on Saturday to win the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Invitational at OKeefe Gym. Fridays game marked the first time the Jackets had hosted the Bulldogs in their first game of the season. Tech traveled to Athens for the 2008 season opener and earned a 3-1 victory, marking their third consecutive triumph in the annual rivalry game. The team received plenty of support from the Tech faithful for the battle against Georgia. The game, which followed the tournaments opening contest between Austin Peay and Mercer, took place before a sold-out crowd of 2,000. Plenty of fans were left stranded outside OKeefe Gym because the building filled to capacity well before game time. [It was a] great crowd tonight. The fans were involved from the beginning being in a rivalry and playing in front of 2,000 people, [the players] just feed off of the adrenaline, said Head Coach Tonya Johnson. The Jackets drew off of the energy in the gym and got off to a fast start in the first set, using a mix of power and touch on offense to build a sizable lead. Rightside hitter Monique Mead, the only freshman starter, landed a pair of powerful spikes for Techs first two points; later, junior setter Mary Ashley Tippins caught Georgia off guard by tapping over a fake set attempt to give Tech a 7-4 lead. The Jackets had an eight-point lead when Georgia took five of six points to close the gap to 18-14, but Mead and sophomore middle blocker Asia Stawicka responded with back-to-back kills for Tech. The Jackets went on to take the last five points to finish the 25-15 first set victory. Georgia started the second set by taking the first three points. Tech fought back to take the lead, and back-to-back service aces by senior middle blocker Brittany Roderick gave the Jackets an 11-7 advantage. Two

points later, Tippins notched an ace of her own to put Tech ahead 13-8. Both teams committed several service errors late in the set, but the Jackets continued to play well on all fronts. DeMichelis had a pair of powerful spikes for kills late in the set, leading Tech to a 25-19 set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. To start the third set Tech got strong offense from DeMichelis, Mead, Hunter, and Stawicka, strong backcourt defense from junior libero Jordan McCullers, and good net play from Tippins and the front line en route to building a 16-9 lead. The Bulldogs began a big comeback midway through the set. Georgia took the next four points and eventually tied the game at 19, taking advantage of several Tech attack errors. The Jackets rebounded to pull ahead 24-23, but the Bulldogs took the last three points to win the third set and stay alive in the match. Georgia went on to take the first four points of the fourth set. At some point that [adrenaline] goes away because the other team finds their rhythm. In the middle of game 3, thats what happened, Johnson said. The Jackets regained their composure and fought back, but the Bulldogs were at their best in the fourth set. After Tech rallied to take a 12-9 lead, Georgia won four straight points to regain the lead, and they only allowed Tech to pull ahead once in the rest of the set. Tech made several service errors down the stretch, and Bulldog outside hitter Erika Clark recorded three late kills to power Georgia to a 25-23 fourth set win. With the match tied at two sets apiece, the teams went to a 15-point fifth set and battled intensely, with neither side putting together a run of more than three points. With the score tied at 13, Mead tapped the ball over to give Tech a slim lead. Georgia took the next point, but the Jackets reclaimed the lead after strong net play set up Hunter for a kill. Tippins and Roderick then combined on a block to win the set 1614 and give the match to the Jackets. The win was Johnsons first as Techs head coach. We knew Georgia wasnt going to back downtheyre a very good team, and they just kept coming at us, but we were able to hold them at the end. Im

Womens basketball schedule for 09-10 season released

By Steven Cappetta Assistant Sports Editor

This seasons schedule for womens basketball was announced this past Friday. This year, the Jackets will take on eight different teams that made it to the postseason last spring in addition to the tough ACC schedule it battles through each year. Tech will also see its first action in the Preseason Womens National Invitational Tournament which will take place Nov. 13-22. The Jackets will open up in the first round against Winthrop in the Preseason WNIT. Tech will play at least three games in the tournament before traveling to Brooklyn N.Y. for the Long Island University Thanksgiving Tournament, which will be held on Nov. 27 and 28. In the LIU Thanksgiving Tournament, Tech will face Seton Hall in the first round.

Some of the major non-conference matchups will include Penn State, Georgia, Oregon and Arizona. On Dec. 2 the Jackets will travel to Penn State to compete in the third annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. This years game against Georgia, scheduled for Dec. 6 in Athens will not be a cakewalk against Georgia and Head Coach Andy Landers. The experienced Landers is 725-239 in his 30 seasons coaching the Bulldogs, and this year his team returns four starters and two additional letter winners from last years squad that finished 18-14 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In last years meeting between Tech and Georgia, the Jackets came out on top 57-42 after a key 11-2 run early in the second half sparked the team. The Jackets are now 3-28 in the all-time series

against the Bulldogs, but all three of the wins have come in the last seven years. Tech will also host the two PAC-10 teams of Oregon and Arizona on December 16 and 20 respectively. At the end of December the girls will participate in the Florida International Holiday Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. where they will meet Hampton in the first round. This tournament will take place on Dec. 28 and 29. ACC play will not open until Jan. 6, when the Jackets will travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina. Last season the Jackets were able to upset the Tar Heels 66-62 for the Jackets first-ever victory over a team ranked in the top three in the nation. In the second meeting in Chapel Hill, Tech was not as successful, falling 73See Basketball, page 27
