The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association's e-newsletter. And we're off! Welcome to 2013 and, suddenly, February is upon us. It's always amazing how quickly the weeks fly by. Here at MAVA, we've had a busy and exciting first month of the new year and believe that the pace and energy of 2013 is on track to bring great success for our community over the months ahead. We began the month by participating in the UVA VC Bootcamp program on January 3rd with a terrific panel of representatives from the "next gen" at five of our active MAVA Member Investor firms. MAVA's Deputy Executive Director, Kim Weir, had the fun job of moderating a discussion with Dan Mindus of CIT Gap Funds, Evan MacQueen of Core Capital Partners, Julia Taxin of Grotech, Gibb Witham of Paladin Capital Group, and Dan Moss ofUpdata Partners. The audience of MBAs and alumni from the VC Bootcamp program enjoyed the candid and casual interaction with this talented group of young investors sharing their "birds eye view" of the VC industry.

Just last week, we held our first two MAVA events of 2013. First, a private, memberhosted event; second, our first community event to kick off the new year. We were so pleased to see the active interaction and dialogue among our member investors, advisors and company-builders at the heart of our community in each of these formats. Please join me in thanking the terrific MAVA Members who are making these events possible and successful. On January 24th, MAVA's Vanguard Roundtable on Healthcare IT was kindly hosted at NEA, and sponsored by BDO, Proskauer and MITRE. The level of engagement among our invited guest CXOs and investors has set the stage for a possible follow-on event or series to continue the dialogue around this complex and dynamic topic. Stay tuned!

On Friday, January 25th, MAVA kicked off the new year with our annual Crystal Ball "Industry Outlook 2013" Breakfast event in Baltimore. It was a beautiful morning in Ravens Nation and we were delighted to welcome many of our members. The morning started with coffee and networking, followed by our active investors and capital providers sharing their thoughts and insights on the year ahead. Our special thanks to John Siegel of Columbia Capital, Bruce Robertson of H.I.G. BioVentures, John Avirett of Greenspring Associates, Tom Grossi of NEA and Jeff Bede of ORIX Ventures for their valuable remarks on the exciting sectors and industry trends they shared with our audience.

To close out this busy month and leap into February, we'll host our 2nd Crystal Ball Breakfast at the Tower Club in Tysons Corner on February 1st with insights from Mike Gaffney at EDG Partners, Sever Totia of Edison Ventures, Jake Tarr of Kinetic Ventures, Carter Griffin of Updata Partners and Greg Shipley of In-Q-Tel. I hope to see you all there! Looking ahead, we have a vivid vision for the programming and value that we plan to deliver to our MAVA members and community of entrepreneurs in 2013. To build and execute our plans for the new year, we will look directly to our membership to support and participate in our programming efforts. We will be launching our Programming, Sponsorship Development and New Member Outreach Committees in February - so stay tuned for details on these new year-long committee opportunities. Between now and the end of February, my team and I are striving to complete all membership renewals and confirm sponsorships from our current members for 2013 Programming and Capital Connection.
