What are the financial benefits?
USF Army ROTC offers you several
opportunities for scholarships with full
tuition/fees (or room and board up to
$10,000 per year). As a high school senior,
you may compete for a 4-year scholarship.
Once on the campus as a USF student, you
may apply for a 3-year or 2-year Army
ROTC Campus Based Scholarship. Each
pays full tuition, $1,200 / year for books,
plus a monthly stipend (during the school
year) for living expenses.
The monthly spending stipend is paid
only during the ten school months.
Freshmen receive $300/month, Sophomores
$350/month, Juniors $450/month, and
Seniors receive $500/month. Many USF
Army ROTC Cadets choose to serve in the
Army Reserve or National Guard
Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP).
As an SMP Cadet, the Cadet is paid the rank
of SGT in the Army unit and hold duties and
responsibilities of an officer.
What is the obligation?
Introductory or basic courses let you
take a look at officer opportunities without
obligation. Once you accept a scholarship
or enter the advanced courses, you make a
commitment to serve as an Army officer for
8 years when you graduate. Some cadets
request full-time active duty assignments
and serve initial tours of 3-4 years. Others
elect to serve as part-time Army Reserve or
National Guard Officers for 6-8 years while
they pursue their civilian careers.

What else does Army ROTC
offer?
SOUTH FLORIDA
As an Army ROTC student, you will ARMY ROTC
have numerous opportunities to perfect
your leadership and military skills. During
the school year, you will participate in two
weekend field training exercises. These
involve small-group leadership challenges
and adventure activities.
After the junior year, cadets participate
in a five-week summer leadership camp
(LDAC), followed by paid internship
opportunities (CTLT) at Army posts in the
U.S., Germany, and Korea. Many cadets
also have summer opportunities for
advanced military training such as
Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain & Northern
Warfare schools.
Army ROTC extracurricular activities
include the USF Color Guard Drill Team
(representing ROTC at campus activities
and community events); Ranger Club (an
Infantry Tactics Club); the Suncoast Suncoast Battalion
Battalion Ranger Challenge Team (an elite
group of Cadets who train in Ranger skills 4202 E. Fowler Ave, CWY
and compete against ROTC Cadets from 405
other universities); and the Scabbard and
Blade, a joint service honor society that

What is Army ROTC?
The Army Reserve Officers' Training
Corps (ROTC) at the University of South
Florida is an educational program of
leadership and military skills training. It
prepares USF students for officer
responsibilities in the active Army, Army
Reserve, or Army National Guard following
graduation from the university.
How can Army ROTC benefit
me?
Army ROTC will help you be successful
during college and after graduation. You will
gain the confidence and self-discipline
necessary to succeed in college and
impress employers when you graduate. As
you progress, you'll gain skills and
experiences in leading activities, setting
goals, managing people and resources, and
making decisions in demanding
circumstances. Additionally, you will earn
opportunities for service-to-country as an
officer, full-time on active duty or part-time
as you pursue a civilian career.
Can I serve in the National
Guard or Reserves?
Army ROTC commissions officers in
the Army National Guard (ARNG) and U.S.
Army Reserve (USAR). These cadets can
receive the same scholarship benefits as
any other cadet but can also be eligible for
drill pay, tuition assistance, and GI Bill
through their service as a Simultaneous
Membership Program (SMP). ARNG and
USAR cadets earn more financial incentives
than any other cadets in the program and
have the ability to guarantee service in
either the ARNG or USAR upon
commissioning. For more information on

How do I get into the program?
Enrolling in USF Army ROTC is as easy
as registering for a freshman course. You
may take any of the basic courses
(freshman and sophomore years) without
obligation.
As an undergraduate or graduate
student, you may qualify for advanced
courses as long as you have two years of
full-time study remaining before
graduation. Students who enter ROTC after
their sophomore year may attend a four
week paid summer training course (LTC),
qualifying you to enter the junior year of
Army ROTC.
If you're a veteran or are currently
serving in the Army Reserve or National
Guard, you may qualify to enter directly
into the advanced course when you
become an academic junior at the
university. You may participate in ROTC
without losing your Montgomery GI Bill or
tuition assistance benefits.
How does Army ROTC fit in at
USF?
Army ROTC courses fit into most USF
academic programs as electives. Students
normally take one course per semester
right along with their other classes. A
minor in Military Science is available to
those students undertaking certain majors.
What does Army ROTC involve?
ROTC is divided into the “Basic” and
“Advanced” Courses. Students take classes,
which count as electives, and participate in
labs and field exercises to practice the skills
learned in the classroom.
Freshmen and sophomores begin with
the no-obligation Basic Courses. They
receive instruction in basic leadership and
military skills such as physical fitness, land
navigation, and first aid. Junior and senior
Cadets make up the Advanced Courses. At
this stage, they receive instruction on
leadership principles and advanced military
skills, culminating in a commission as an
Army Officer.
