Natural History Research Experiences Application Form for Summer 2013

Three requirements for a complete application:

1. Fill in this form using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word. Send the completed application as an email attachment to NHRE@si.edu. 2. Arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to NHRE@si.edu. The most effective letter writers are those who can speak about your potential for the NHRE program. Usually, these will be college professors or other mentors. The letters should be sent directly by the letter writers, not by the applicant. The reference form may be downloaded from the NHRE website (http://www.mnh.si.edu/NHRE/apply.htm). 3. Submit transcripts for all colleges that you have attended. Unofficial electronic or scanned versions are acceptable and should be sent to NHRE@si.edu. Paper transcripts may be sent to: Natural History Research Experiences, Attn: Virginia Power, Smithsonian Institution, Department of Entomology [NHB, MRC 165], P.O. Box 37012, Washington, DC 20013-7012. All application documents (application form, two letters of recommendation, college transcripts) must be received by January 30, 2013. It is the students responsibility to ensure that letters of reference reach NHRE@si.edu as attached Word or PDF documents before the application deadline.

I believe that an internship at NMNH would bring me the most treasured opportunity I ever had until this date to develop as a future Bioarchaeologist and Forensic Anthropologist, while bringing me the chance to make an investigation using materials and research methodologies I ought to comprehend and in which I cultivate for my future tuition. The direct experience with such fine and estimated resources, including the researchers themselves, I would appreciate as I know my future mentor would as well do. Most of the graduate schools Ive contacted for appliance ask for investigations done by the student and this research I believe would definitely open doors in that direction. In my most personal aspirations, this internship would bring me the chance to meet and work with new people amplifying my networks for possible future collaborations, knowledge exchange and job opportunities. Hopefully Ill be admitted on the University of Tarapaca at Chile and study under the direction of Chinchorro mummies investigator Bernardo Arriaza. Since my formation would be concentrated on the analysis of soft tissues of mummified human bodies, I find that the knowledge this internship could bring me closer to understand the human osteology and the information it can generate and complement with my emphasis. Experience / background Provide a narrative describing your interest in the NHRE program and the natural history disciplines. Be sure to include relevant experiences such as previous internships, volunteer appointments, organization memberships, independent research projects, etc. Limit your answer to the space provided on this page (3000 characters or less, including spaces).
