Child Survival

At UNICEF, we believe that every child, regardless of circumstances or socioeconomic background, has the right to grow and thrive. Tragically, every year, millions of childrens lives are cut short by entirely preventable causes. Many of these deaths come as a result of treatable illnesses, malnutrition, poor hygiene and lack of safe water and sanitation. UNICEFs experience in the field has taught us that saving lives doesnt need to be complicated or cost-intensive. Our Child Survival programming works by making use of existing low-cost, low-technology and high impact interventions such as micronutrient supplementation, and adoption of safe hygiene practices to prevent unnecessary maternal and child deaths and reduce malnutrition. Additionally, UNICEF is recognized as the leading global provider of disease-preventing bed nets and vaccines - reaching over half the worlds children and saving millions of lives. With over 60 years of experience in the field, UNICEFs programs and initiatives are developed and run to safeguard the most basic human right of all a childs right to survive. Child Protection

It is estimated that between 500 million and 1.5 billion children are victims of violence, exploitation and abuse annually. Tragically, these experiences have a lasting effect on childrens physical and mental health - damaging their ability to learn and socialize, and negatively affecting their transition to adulthood. UNICEF believes that all children, regardless of gender, culture, religion and socio-economic background, have the right to grow up in safety. Our programs address every aspect of child protection worldwide from armed violence reduction, to child trafficking, to female genital mutilation, to psychosocial support for children in conflict zones. As a leader in the field, UNICEF gets results in 2010 our initiatives helped strengthen child protection systems in 131 countries, and reached millions of people. UNICEF and our partners use an understanding of local community values and customs to introduce new initiatives, strengthen existing child protection programs and advocate for changes in legislation which promote positive norms.

At UNICEF we know that by working together to safeguard vulnerable kids we are not just protecting them from harm we are giving them back their right to a childhood Emergency At UNICEF, we know that after a large-scale emergency, acting quickly to restore normalcy for children affected is vital to their emotional and physical wellbeing. In the mind of a child hope is a fragile thing - and response timing can be critical to a childs sense of empowerment and possibility. Thats why UNICEF maintains a permanent presence in virtually every country in the world so were in a position to be first on the scene in crisis situations to manage all aspects of emergency reparations. UNICEF responds s to more than 200 emergencies every year. In 2010 alone, UNICEF responded to approximately 290 humanitarian situations in 98 countries. Guided by The Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action the CCCs UNICEFs programs promote timely collective humanitarian action targeting everything from disease outbreaks, to children in conflict zones and sexual exploitation, to restoring basic education. Our teams take a multi-level approach to dealing with crisis situations - working with governments, affected communities and on a one-to-one basis with individual children to begin the long journey towards recovery and renewal. Education When we educate our children we empower our communities. UNICEF understands that education is not only a universal right; its a powerful tool that helps break the cycles of poverty, disease and social inequity. That is why UNICEF works to ensure that all children have access to quality, child-centred education regardless of circumstances, gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic background. UNICEFs programs and initiatives span the entire spectrum of education provision - from early childhood development and school readiness, to monitoring quality of education in every country in the world, to emergency recovery programs that bring classrooms to children in crisis situations. The success of these initiatives is undeniable. In the last five years the number of primary school age children who are out of school declined by 14 million. Additionally, roughly two thirds of the worlds countries and territories have met the target for gender parity in primary education. At UNICEF, we believe children are our future - and we work tirelessly with governments and local communities to give kids the tools they need to make it bright.

HIV and AIDS The global battle with the HIV and AIDS epidemic is the most significant health challenge of our time. As the worlds leading child-focused humanitarian and development agency, UNICEF understands that preventing the transmission of HIV to children, and protecting and treating children affected by AIDS is the key to reversing and finally halting the epidemic. In 2005 UNICEF launched its dynamic UNITE for Children, UNITE Against AIDS Campaign, as a worldwide call to action for all those who were dedicated to the treatment and care of children affected by the epidemic. The initiative takes a comprehensive approach targeting the four key pillars of prevention, care, treatment and protection. At the forefront of the international response to the crisis, UNICEF has HIV Section offices in 190 countries worldwide, provides child formulation antiretroviral drugs to more than 50 countries, and in 2009 procured 12 million HIV rapiddiagnostic test kits. Dedicated to reversing the epidemic for mothers and children by 2015, UNICEF stands strong to ensure that the protection and treatment of children remains central to the global response to HIV and AIDS. Advocacy UNICEF, the worlds leading child-focused humanitarian and development agency, works to ensure that childrens universal human rights are respected, protected and implemented. As the worlds advocate for childrens rights, we influence perspectives, policies and decisions to advance the rights of children in all countries UNICEF works with governments, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector to produce leading research and translate it into action for children and their communities. We advocate to bring the issues and concerns of children in Canada and worldwide to the attention of governments and others who set policy, law and practice. Policy analysis is an essential aspect of UNICEFs work. As the only organization named in the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a source of expertise for governments, UNICEF is uniquely positioned to assess and shed light on national and international policies that fall below the UNs standards and put children at risk. We share our findings with monitoring bodies, and work with partners to help place the fulfillment of childrens rights at the centre of countries policies and their programs for poverty reduction and human development. Our work helps the world better understand the circumstances that affect the well-being of children, and leads to the development of new approaches and actions to secure childrens vital universal rights.
