ED 321 Self-Assessment Lesson Plan 2 Tweeting an Article

Planning and Preparation (AEA: Conceptualization, DiagnosisWTS: 1,7DISP: Respect Responsibility) Explain and defend the decisions you made in choosing your objectives and the assessment tools/strategies for this lesson. Even if the lesson was given to you to teach, you must consider the effectiveness of the objectives and assessments. I chose my objective to be around summarizing because I think it is an important skill students need to have when they are evaluating a source for research because it will help them to put a lot of information in a brief paragraph that contains the main ideas and their relationships. I decided to relate summarizing to twitter because twitter is something relevant to their life. So now, when they think about summarizing, they will think about twitting, to make a big story short. I created my own assessment rubric for the students summaries. I wanted to check if they identify the main ideas and relate them in a short way in the form of a tweet. Responsibility)

What were the discipline issues that presented themselves during the teaching of this lesson? How did you anticipate these and handle them? This time, all the students did a great job doing all their work. There were two disciplinary problems I observed. The first one was a student who was falling asleep while doing his work, he was also playing with his hair a lot. Apparently, he was finished, but did not bring a book to read in silent reading. When I noticed he was sleeping, I went to him and asked him if everything was fine, if he was feeling good. He told me he was fine and woke up a little. I observed the other disciplinary issue after I watched the videotape of my lesson. A student who I thought was working all the time (one of the girls who had some issues doing the work I asked students to do) apparently was listening to music the entire time of my lesson. I do not know how to proceed next. I am thinking on asking her if she was really listening to music, and to find a solution so she does not do it again, or should I tell my C. T. about it, or just let it slide because I will be done soon and she will go on to high school soon as well.

After teaching the lesson and analyzing student work, describe how your decisions impacted student learning. How do you know? How well did your assessment connect to the lesson objectives? Are there changes you would make or things you could have done differently? I think my decision of relating twitter to summarizing was a good idea because it maintained the students engaged. Many are twitter users, and I bet all the rest know about it because it is all over the media. The relationship of summarizing and twitter was not the only thing that had the students engaged in my lesson. The articles I choose from TweenTribune.com were written by other students their age, which made them interesting and easy to read. I know the majority of students understood summarizing because in the worksheet I gave them to complete I could see the main ideas of the article in the small boxes, and in the big one they relate the main ideas to create a short version of the already brief summary. My assessment connects to my objective because I wanted the students to identify the main ideas, relate them to create a summary. I think the summary is a way to see if the student understood the text they read. One thing I would do differently next time would be to remind the students to do less than of 140 characters because I observed in the students work that many did more than that. Consider student learning as you reflect on your teaching of this lesson. Explain how the evidence you obtained in your lesson (assessment) demonstrated the degree to which all students achieved your objectives. As I was reading the students work I observed the majority of the students were able to find the main ideas of their articles, and then brought all those ideas together to form a short summary. I have included with this self assessment an example of a students work. Professional Responsibilities (AEA: Communication, Integrative InteractionWTS: 10DISP:
Collaboration, Communication)

Explain how you incorporated feedback from your cooperating teacher and supervisor, if applicable, to the planning/teaching of this lesson. What decisions did you make based on feedback received?

This time, my C. T. gave the liberty of choosing whatever I wanted to teach the students. I have found this liberty to be not so kind to me because I am always thinking about the students and their needs. I dont want to teach them something unrelated to what they are currently learning. Hopefully, for the next lessons she will give some ideas of the things the students need to. It will be difficult because they are currently doing research and they are using a booklet with all the steps the students have to follow.
