LESSON PLAN 4 CITE YOUR SITES

Outcomes: CCSS WS 8.8: Gather relevant information from multiple print digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. Instructional objective: The students will be able to accurately create a citation, paraphrase and use direct quotations to properly cite a source in order to avoid plagiarism. This activity will help them to revise their students research project. Assessment: I will collect their reaction to the question about plagiarism. A checklist to see if the expectations are met by the groups work.

Materials Needed: Loose paper Different books to practice citing sources. Graphic Organizer. Attached.

Total Time Needed: 35-40 min Procedures: Introduction (5 min): As soon as all the students are sitting down, I will start reading one of the following scenarios: 1. You and a friend have been working on your final research papers for your English class for the past month. The night before the papers are due, you get together for an allnight editing session. At 12 a.m., your friends computer dies, and he loses his entire paper. He did not save it on a flash drive. Your friend is devastated, and he decides to copy and paste paragraphs from the internet, does not put the information in his own words, and does not give credit to the original authors. How do you respond to his/her actions?

2. You are been working during two months on a story about the end of the world. You have spent countless nights writing the story: The One who Could not Cry. You have made multiple drafts, and finally, after 2 months of hard work you finish it and it is a masterpiece. One day, your friend comes over to your house; she sees your wonderful story and asks you if she can take it home to read it later. You say yes. One week later, she is on the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the headline says Student from Greenfield Middle School wins a national award with story The One who Could not Cry. And guess what? The name of the student is not you. He won other awards and a lot of money! Take a couple of minutes to respond to this question in a piece of paper that you can give me.

Steps for instruction (30 min): After the students have some time to respond to the question, I will ask it again to elicit responses from them. So, how do you respond to his/her actions? Are his actions an act of plagiarism? What is plagiarism? What can you do to avoid plagiarism in your research paper?

THE STUDENTS WILL GIVE THEIR OPINIONS AND WHEN THEY MENTION TO USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND CITE YOUR SOURCES I WILL CONTINUE. Yes! To avoid plagiarism you need to use your own thinking. And if you use the ideas of others you need to give them credit. You use parenthetical citations after the paraphrased ideas or direct quotations you borrowed from a author. And at the end of your research essay, you create a work cited page where you list all the sources you used to write your paper. I know you have been working on giving credit to different authors and sources, and I would like to see what you have learned. This is what we are going to do today as a review of how to avoid plagiarism. I have here some materials that I would use for my research paper: Interesting things to do in Wisconsin. I will finish my semester in a couple of weeks, and since I will not

travel to Costa Rica or Mexico till winter, I will like to see what is there to do here in Wisconsin. Maybe you can go to some of these places this summer! Let me show you what you will do in groups.

I WILL GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO MAKE A CITATION FOR A BOOK, AND HOW TO USE IT PHARAPRASING AND USING DIRECT QUOTATIONS. For example, I have this book. First, I am going to create a citation for my works cited page. I need the name of the author; last name first. Then the name of the book underlined. The place of publication and the publishers name; then the date it was published. Indent when necessary.

Georgiady, Nicholas and Romano, Luis. Wisconsin Historical Sights. Milwaukee: Franklin Publishers, Inc. I WILL HAVE TWO EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE IN TEXT CITATION IN NEWSPRINT. ONE EXAMPLE IS PHARAPRASED AND THE OTHER WITH DIRECT QUOTATIONS. Here is an example of how I would use the book in my paper.

Paraphrase: According to Wisconsin Historical Sights, one interest place you cannot miss when you visit wonderful Wisconsin is the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, Wisconsin. It has a great collection of 35 vintage wagons; no wonder Wisconsin is called the Mother of Circuses (Georgiady and Romano 29-30). In text citations: An interesting place to visit, where time has stopped, is the Wade House located between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac. Inside the house each of the rooms is fully furnished with things of the past (Georgiady and Romano 9). Lets make groups of four people so you can start working! But first, let me write what I want you to do in your groups. I have some worksheets to help you. And if you want, I can make copies of all of the worksheets from each group so you can review in a later time to find suggestions of a interesting place to visit in Wisconsin.

Here is how I want you to form groups. Lets start counting in this row up to ten, after ten start with one again. All the ones sit over here, the twos here, so on and so on. One member of the group come and get the source you will work on.

THE STUDENTS WILL GO ON TO WORK FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES. AFTER THE STUDENTS ARE DONE, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SHARING TIME. (approx. 5 min) Group 1, can you share your work with group two three to four five to six seven to eight and nine to ten.

Conclusion (5 min): Hopefully, this activity today helped you to have more practice with citing books and using in text citations and paraphrasing so you can go back to your works cited page or your papers to make any revisions. Remember to always give credit to the sources, use your own words, or direct quotations in your papers. Also, save often your work in a flash drive so you do not have to commit any plagiarism as the friend in the scenario at the beginning of class. Or respect others ideas, remember how would you feel if a friend steal the spotlight from you.
