Continuous Modal I could be swimming at the beach right now. Perfect Modal I could have swum at the beach yesterday. Modal verbs exhibit the following features: they do not take s on the third person singular, present tense, e.g. *he cans/mays/musts/wills, etc. they do not have non-finite form, e.g. *to can, to may, to must, or *canning, maying, musting, woulding, etc. they do not combine internally, e.g. they do not co-occur in constructions like: *must can, *will can/must, etc. they do not allow do support, e.g. *do you can come to the party?, *you do not can go, they invert with the subject in interrogation, e.g. Can you come to the party?, Must he leave so soon?, they can be directly negated by not, e.g. I/we/he/they cant come to your party., they are complemented by a verb in the infinitival form. Modal Can Uses Ability (to be able to) (general or during a specific event) Possibility Inability Impossibility Asking for permission Request Continuity with verbs of perception Example They can swim. Assumption/Expectation should Children ought to listen to their parents. Moral duty You neednt wear gloves. Need Suggestion I need hardly say / neednt say how sorry we with hardly, scarcely, only are. You neednt do it alone. I can help you. the speakers authority or advice Used to Past habit (with both action and He used to be a very good doctor. state verbs) He used to run every morning. Notes: Could and was able for past ability: 1. For ability, only, either can be used: e.g. When I was young I could/was able to swim very fast. 2. For ability + particular action, use was able: e.g. Although the driver was really shocked he was able to explain what had happened. (He could and did explain.) This rule, however, is relaxed in the negative when the action did not take place, and with verbs of the senses: e.g. He read the book but he couldnt/wasnt able to understand it. I could/was able to see him through the window. Must 1. Must for strong recommendation A.E. prefers the form should. e.g. You look tired. You must/should take a day off. 2. Dare 1. In the affirmative dare is conjugated like an ordinary verb, i.e. dare/dares in the present, dared in the past. But in the negative and interrogative it can be conjugated either like an ordinary verb or like an auxiliary, i.e. it is a semi-modal. However, the ordinary verb construction is more commonly used. Negative present Do/does not dare Dare not past Did not dare Dared not Interrogative present Do you / does he dare? Dare you/he? past Did you / did he dare? Dared you/he? 2. Infinitives after dare Negatives and interrogative forms with do/did are in theory followed by the infinitive with to, but in practice the to is often omitted: e.g. He doesnt dare (to) say anything. Did he dare (to) criticize me? Dare I/he/you? etc. and dare not forms take the infinitive without to: e.g. Dare we come in? They dared not say anything. When dare is preceded by nobody, anybody, etc. the to is optional: e.g. Nobody dared (to) speak. 3. dare is not much used in the affirmative except in the expression I daresay (or I dare say) which has two idiomatic meanings: a) I suppose: e.g. I daresay therell be a restaurant car on the train. b) I accept what you say (but it doesnt make any difference): e.g. The teacher said the test was optional. I daresay it was but youll have to tell me your mark all the same. 4. How dare(d) you? How dare(d) he/they? can express indignation: e.g. How dare you open my letters? (I am angry with you for opening them.) How dared he complain? (I am indignant because he complained.) 5. dare is also an ordinary transitive verb meaning challenge (but only to deeds requiring courage). It is followed by object + full infinitive: e.g. I dare you to swim to that rock. Need Need can be both an auxiliary and an ordinary verb. As an auxiliary it is a semi-modal, i.e. it has both modal and ordinary verb forms. As a modal, its forms are need or need not/neednt for all persons in the present and future and in indirect speech; interrogative: Need + subject?; negative interrogative: need + subject + not? / neednt + subject? Need conjugated as above takes the bare infinitive. As an auxiliary it is seldom used in the affirmative except when a negative or interrogative sentence is preceded by an expression which changes the negative or interrogative verb into an affirmative): e.g. I dont think I need wear gloves.

Neednt have (done) vs. didnt have/need (to do) 1. neednt have done: no obligation but action performed (unnecessarily): e.g. You neednt have watered the flowers, for it is going to rain. (You wasted your time.) 2. didnt have/need to do: no obligation, and normally no action: e.g. I didnt have to translate it for him for he understands German. neednt, could and should + perfect infinitive 1. neednt + perfect infinitive is often combined with could + perfect infinitive: e.g. I wanted an umbrella so I bought one. You neednt have bought a new one. You could have borrowed mine. 2. neednt have and should have shouldnt have (done) implies criticism neednt have (done) does not imply criticism e.g. She shouldnt have bought that new stereo.
