Engineering Statement
Rodgers Leask aims to provide the highest possible personal service, appropriate design and advice for clients. It is important to the company that it works 1. 2. closely with other design team members to ensure that economic designs are achieved, which meet all the clients requirements. A strength of the company is its commitment to team work both externally and internally. A Director will be responsible for the project and will be directly involved with the project throughout assisted by a Regional Director/ Team Leader, who will be responsible for the design team working on the project. Our Civil engineering department also offers unrivalled expertise in all sectors of the construction industry delivering: 3. Civil engineering design covering roads, drainage and all types of infrastructure both on and off site (S278, S38 highways work and S104 drainage work) Ground modelling / earthworks calculations using MX/ PDS Storm water sewer design, simulation modelling, balancing facilities and control chambers, checking for compliance with EA / Drainage Authority requirements In addition there is a dedicated geotechnical and environmental department (Rodgers Leask Environmental) providing: Geotechnical and environmental investigations and testing. Foundation solutions and ground improvement recommendations. Site remediation strategies. Factual and interpretative site investigation reports. Qualitative Risk Assessment (QRA). Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA).
Engineering Statement
Rodgers Leask has broad expertise covering the structural design of buildings in the majority of the construction industry. Data Centre
Location: Isle of Man Client: Mercury Engineering To provide design and details of alteration works to an existing steel framed structure for use as a data centre. The works included significant alterations to the existing facades including infilling of existing openings and the formation of new ones. To provide a new mezzanine floor deck formed using in-situ concentre on a preformed meta shutter decking supported on a grillage of steel beams. This was designed to be capable of supporting the high loadings due to equipment to be installed.

The work carried out by Rodgers Leasks Civil Engineering Department is becoming of ever growing importance both in pure engineering terms and on major structural projects where there are requirements for drainage and highway design. For the majority of clients for whom we have worked we have undertaken major infrastructure works including roads and drainage. Most schemes now involve the provision of storm water detention facilities within a site to avoid overloading the existing sewerage network, or watercourses. We have the appropriate computer software to be able to model roads and drainage schemes efficiently.

Rodgers Leask recognises the benefits of a structured IT strategy and employs a full-time IT Manager to ensure the IT is maintained and upgraded, thus providing immediate support to all the staff in our four offices. We have a fully maintained webpage, which we would invite all our clients to visit, and can provide web authoring services if required. All offices are serviced by an Intranet utilising the latest equipment and cabling standards throughout. These are linked via our servers to the Internet for necessary electronic communications such as email, ftp, http, IRC and communications such as email , ftp, http, IRC and VPN. A backup of all systems is carried out daily to ensure that loss of data due to accidental deletion or hardware failure is minimised. The majority of our design and detailing is carried out with the help of computers although not at the expense of traditional knowledge and skill. All our technical staff use AutoCAD based products supplemented by Microsoft Office. On the design front we have numerous pieces of software available to our Engineers and Technicians to aid them in their design of both earthworks and structures. In particular we carry out designs utilisign the following: PDS and MX Site (integrated with AutoCAD) for earth modelling together with necessary design on highways Micro Drainage for drainage calculations, design and layout AutoTrack for highway design. ESA Prima, Master Series, S-Frame and P-frame for frame analysis TEDDS and SCALE calculation software for all aspects of structure CSC 3D+, S-Frame and Fastrack/Portal Frame for frame design and layout(integrated with AutoCAD) CADS 3D+MAX, R.C. Beam and Column Designer and R.C. CAD for reinforced concrete calculation, design, arrangement and scheduling CADS Wall Panel Designer Printing of the resulting information is all done in-house with networked printers, photocopiers and large format - large volume multi-function copiers, both monochrome and colour, available to all users. This enables prompt issue of documents to our clients and scheme partners.

Rodgers Leask (the Organisation) aims to provide defect free products (service) to its clients on time and within budget. The Organisation operates a Quality Management System that has gained BS EN ISO 9001 : 2000 certification, including aspects specific to consulting civil, structural and environmental engineering.

All personnel understand the requirements of this Quality Policy and abide with the contents of the Quality Manual. The Organisation complies with all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements. The Organisation constantly monitors its quality performance and implements improvements when appropriate. The Quality Policy is regularly reviewed in order to ensure its continuing suitability. Copies of the Quality Policy are made available to all members of staff. Copies of the minutes of Management Reviews, or extracts thereof, are provided to individual members of staff in accordance with their role and responsibilities as a means of communicating the effectiveness of the Quality Management System.

Rodgers Leask promote and support the Institution of Structural Engineers and Institution of Civil Engineers. John Rodgers and Andrew Leask have both been past Chairman of the Institution of Structural Engineers, East Midlands Branch, and are both still very active within the Branch in promoting structural engineering within the region.

This Health and Safety Policy has been laid down by the companies, Rodgers Leask Ltd and Rodgers Leask Environmental Ltd (the Rodgers Leask Group), in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The Policy is reviewed annually. Henceforth the term Company will mean both Rodgers Leask Ltd and Rodgers Leask Environmental Ltd, i.e. the Rodgers Leask Group. The Company willingly accepts its duty, so far as is reasonably practicable, to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of its employees and others who may be affected by their actions. It is Company Policy to provide safe and health working conditions for all employees, and to make available all necessary resources in terms of manpower, plant and equipment training, information and supervision for the safe execution of their work. Due regard is given to the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996, The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 1994, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Work at Height Regulations 2005, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, the COSHH Regulations 2002 (and as amended 2004), the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, and all other relevant legislation, approved codes of practice etc.
The implementation of this Health and Safety Policy is the direct responsibility of the company director, Mr A Leask (hereafter referred to as the Health and Safety Director). To assist in this undertaking, the responsibility for the management of health and safety throughout the company is delegated to the Health and Safety CoOrdinator, Mr I Bradley. All other employees of the company have a duty under the Policy and the Law to assist in this undertaking. The content of the Policy is made known to all employees through Company Induction as the start of employment as made necessary by amendment. To assist the Health and Safety Manager in fulfilling his duties, the Company retains the services of Health and Safety Consultants, Wenlock Health and Safety Ltd of Telford (specifically, Mrs J.M. Horsewood, MIIRSM, MaPS, TechSP). The company thus has access to external safety services such as advice, training, accident investigation, documentation etc. and is kept fully abreast of changing legislation, developments and best practice.
