Model Answers: 1. How does Textile industry occupy a unique position in the Indian economy?

Ans. Textile industry occupies a unique position in the Indian economy due to following reasons: a. Textile industries play an important role by contributing 14 percentages towards industrial production. b. It is the second largest employer after the agricultural sector. About 35 million people are directly engaged in the Textile industries. c. It is contributing significantly towards the foreign trade and earning the foreign exchange of 24.6 % every year. d. Textile industries also play a unique role towards the economy of the country by contributing 4% towards the GDP. e. It is self reliant and completes the value chain. i.e raw materials to the highest value added products.

Explain few factors that affect the location of industries? Ans. The most important factor for the location of industries is that the cost of production should be the least and in light of this factor the other factors are considereda. Availability of raw material The industries are largely located at the places where raw materials are easily available in abundance and also in cheaper rates at close proximity. b. Availability of power For the localizations of the industries power supply plays a significant role. Uninterrupted power supply is very much needed for efficient growth of the industries. c. Market An accessible easy market also affects the localization of industries. The finished products from the industries need to be transported to the market for easy trade. d. Labour Cheap and abundant labour is very much required for the growth of every industry so it is seen that Iron and steel industries came up in Chhotanagpur Plateau because of the availability of cheap labour from the nearby states. e. Government Policy The regions which have favourable government policies for the industries the entrepreneur tend to open up the industries in these regions.
