Narberth Civic Association July, 2012 Meeting

Minutes Board members present: Jim Speer (Secretary), Liz Brown (Federation Rep), Georgette DuBois, George Lonsdorf, Deborah Lonsdorf (President), Andy Haakenson Absent: Christine Jackson Call to Order 7:07 June Minutes are approved TREASURERS REPORT (attached) FEDERATION REPORT: The latest Federation topics of conversation focus on the comprehensive zoning changes in Lower Merion. This could affect Narberth, if Waldron Academy (on the Narberth border) chooses to expand under new institutional zoning terms, or change traffic patterns. Next Federation meeting is in September, where we expect further conversation on this topic. The NCA re-affirms its desire to stay out of issues which only affect Lower Merion Township, reserving our input for matters which affect Narberth Borough, directly or indirectly. Old Business BULLETIN BOARD The NCA received a 3x4 bulletin board from Linda Pitt, free via LM Community Network. We can re-paint it. We have permission to hang it at the train station. Our policy is that postings must be dated, and removed within a month. Deborah will paint it, label it, and find a way to mount it at the train station. FALL MEMBERSHIP MEETING We booked Dennis Montagna to give his historic talk on Narberth, for Wed, Oct 10, which will be our membership meeting. Members will get in free, and non-members to

pay a suggested donation, in the neighborhood of $5 pay online ahead of time, or $7 at the door. We will set a definite donation policy later, and alert Dennis to our intentions to charge. Jim will find out the date and details of the September borough-sponsored form zoning lecture. We will determine the suitability of co-publicizing this event along with our October meeting. Liz will coordinate a new Ricklins window display, with the aim of publicizing our October membership meeting, and maybe also the September zoning meeting. The goal is to have a new display up by the beginning of September. LECTURE SERIES Laura Jackson (of Merion) is interested in presenting a piece on Transition town, on the topic of small towns role within the evolving broader economy. We have the idea of presenting this as part of a lecture series, of maybe 4 per year. This will be explored at future meetings. LIBRARY DECK Via councilwoman Heidi Boise: There have been architectural drawings ordered, which will show options for the deck to be built off the community room of the library. We will wait for the drawings to come out, and then we will publicize the deck situation more widely to see if there is interest in residents making commentary. We'd like to get a blurb about the patio for our News page when the time comes. We may ask Heidi Boise or David Brawer to write something for us. New Business ARCHWAY SIGN We would very much like to have a nice wooden sign for NarbEarth Day, similar to the 4th of July Committee has for 4th of July. Georgette will find out where the 4th of July Committee stores their sign during the year, and see if we can store ours there too. George and Deborah will design a sign. Jim will coordinate building of the sign. CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGE on his appointment to the Library board

CONTENT OF CIVIC MEETINGS The following are items to consider exploring for NCA activity: - Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd has monthly reporting from police officers, and Township commissioners. - We are interested in having police , mayor, borough council, give presentations at NCA meetings/events. - We could be paying more attention looking at the boroughs budget - We could do an informal survey of what other neighboring Civic associations include in their meetings. - We could invite Bob Wegbreit (chair of highway committee) to attend NCA to discuss borough personnel and job descriptions - We could invite Sam Quinn (council president) or Aaron Muderick (VP) to discuss council meeting agendas, and meeting formats. - We could link to and/or post and publicize council agendas WEBSITE We are moving ahead with listing on our website the Council subcommittees and citizen commissions, what they do, and who is on them. Yet to be determined is how we will keep up with changes in the makeup of these committees. Additionally, we could be listing: Who are the borough employees? What are their job responsibilities? Georgette will find out when will be Bill Martins next budget presentation, and we can publicize that more widely. Meeting adjourned 8:37 Next NCA meeting will be September 12th
