Midterm Exam Review Guide

Algebra 1
2011-2012

About the Exam:

Your midterm exam will begin with benchmark 1.3 Translate among various representations of linear functions including tables, graphs, words, and equations and consist of all benchmarks up to and until benchmark 2.3 Solve problems that can be modeled using pairs of linear equations in two variables, interpret the solutions, and determine whether the solutions are reasonable. Your midterm will be a total of 50 questions The questions will be grouped together by benchmark. There will be twenty (20) multiple choice questions Twenty-two (22) questions will be a combination of open ended questions where you must be able to; o Graph o Write equations o Solve equations o Solve inequalities o Solve absolute values o Solve absolute value inequalities o Write the equation and solve word problems

Objectives:
Linear functions, equations and inequalities STANDARD 1 The student will recognize, use, and graph linear functions and inequalities and will understand slope, x and y intercepts of a line. The student will write linear equations in equivalent forms. 1.3 Translate among various representations of linear functions including tables, graphs, words, and equations. Be able to create a line graph from a data chart Graph linear equations and show that they have constant rates of change. Be able to graph a straight line and show it is continuous Determine slope, x-intercept, and y-intercept of a line given its graph or equation. Determine the equation of a line given sufficient information. (ex. Two points on the line, slope and a point, etc.) Graph a line given equation or given sufficient information about the line. Write, interpret, and translate among equivalent forms of equations for linear functions (slopeintercept, point-slope, and standard), recognizing that equivalent forms reveal more or less information about a given situation. Solve problems that can be modeled using linear equations and inequalities, interpret the solutions, and determine whether the solutions are reasonable. Graph a linear inequality in two variables.

Understand the connections between absolute value and distance and analyze the graphs of absolute value expressions. Solve equations and inequalities involving absolute values. Understand the concepts of parallel lines and perpendicular lines and how those slopes are related. Find the equation of a line perpendicular to a given line that passes through a given point.

STANDARD 2 The student will solve and use systems of linear functions and inequalities. 2.1 Understand the relationship between a solution of a pair of linear equations in two variables and the graphs of the corresponding lines, and solve pairs of linear equations in two variables by graphing, substitution, or elimination. 2.2 Graph the solution set for a pair of linear inequalities in two variables with and without technology and use the graph to find the solution. 2.3 Solve problems that can be modeled using pairs of linear equations in two variables, interpret the solutions, and determine whether the solutions are reasonable.

Sample Questions: Multiple Choice Choose the equation that is perpendicular to a. b. Graph Graph the linear inequality. c. d.
