Halliburton Special Waiver: DS-1 Third Edition Volume 3, BHA Bevel Diameter Criteria Overview Improper seal stresses can arise when connections with substantially different IDs, ODs and bevel diameters are mated and made up to API makeup torque (MUT). Seal stress in excess of the minimum specified yield strength (MYS) can result in finning and excessive galling of the seal area. Inadequate seal stress increases the probability of leaking under load. If seal stress is maintained in the proper range, the connection will neither leak nor suffer seal damage. T H Hill Associates, Inc. has addressed this issue by requiring bevel diameters to conform to the revised requirements in DS-1 Vol. 3, Table 3.8, New Bevel Diameter criteria. These requirements result in minimum seal stresses no less than 40% of the MYS and maximum seal stresses no more than 90% of the MYS; even when components with mismatched Box OD, Pin ID and bevel diameters were made up to the API MUT. Special Criteria Halliburton closely controls the material properties and connection dimensions for their MWD and LWD (M/LWD) tools. Review of the connection seal stresses and dimensions on the API connections within the M/LWD assembly string (internal connections) of Halliburtons M/LWD tools has indicated that the resulting seal stresses on these API connections meets the DS-1 seal stress range. As long as the M/LWD assembly string connections are mated to another M/LWD component of same dimensions, the seal stress falls within the recommended range. M/LWD collars and subs have limited variation in OD/ID at the connection shoulders and bevel diameter dimensions are the same for all seal faces in each string ensuring matched seal faces regardless of tool string configuration. The bevel diameters of these internal connections on M/LWD components should be inspected in accordance with requirements listed in Table 1, as long as the connection type, Box OD, Pin ID, and MUT are consistent. Dimensional requirements specified in DS-1 Third Edition Volume 3, Table 3.8 still apply for all up-hole and down-hole API connections (end connections) unless an appropriate cross over is used. When an appropriate crossover is used, the connection between the crossover and M/LWD tool should be inspected in accordance with requirements listed in Table 1. Dimensional requirements specified in DS-1 Third Edition Volume 3, Table 3.8 still apply for the end connection of the crossover sub.
