Early Saturday morning Strathmore residents woke up to a local state of emergency and a mandatory water ban. There had been a break in the water line from Calgary. The break, which occurred in a T line near the Wildflower Ranch, had Town officials scrambling to determine the problem and a solution. The first concern was making sure there would be an adequate supply of water for fire protection levels. Local hockey games were cancelled, the Aquatic Centre was closed and residents were asked to conserve water every way possible. In September 2011 Director of Engineering and Operations for the Town Jesse Parker came to council stating the need for a new 11.5 million litre reservoir. The project, predicted to cost approximately $10 million was out of budget, but necessary. Currently, until the completion of the reservoir, there is little over a days worth of water in the reservoir. The fear in 2011 had been if there ever was a break would there be adequate water for the town. There is currently enough water for fire protection levels but the town has implemented a temporary, mandatory water ban advising residents to use water for essential use only, said Tracy Simpson, information officer for the Town in a press conference on Jan. 12. Following the water restrictions was extremely important, and if residents hadnt complied with the ban the water would have been shut off. Firefighters from different fire halls in the area and volunteers went door-to-door informing residents of the ban. There were also updates on the Towns website, Facebook and Twitter pages. By 8 a.m. Jan. 13, just barely over the 24-hour mark, Town officials announced the break had been found and fixed. Crews had worked day and night to repair the break as quickly as possible and get things back on track. Continued on Page 2

Water ban!
For the second time in three years, the Town of Strathmore declared a local state of emergency on Jan. 12 after a waterline break in the Wildflower Ranch subdivision. The Town of Strathmore and Epcor, along with numerous volunteers, quickly jumped into action and solved the problem, ending the mandatory water ban early Sunday morning. Doug Taylor Photo

Honoured for her hockey commitment

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Bringing hockey back to Gleichen has been a challenge, but a worthwhile one for Pond Hockey President Cara Sheppard. In 2009 the program began with 13 kids, and has grown to over 80 registered this year. Each year Hockey Alberta presents a Meritorious Award to recognize and honour individuals who have served and promoted hockey in the community in some fashion. On June 9 at the Hockey Alberta Annual General Meeting Sheppard was presented with the award. I was kind of shocked when I got it and it took me about three times of phoning the guy back to actually confirm that I actually won it, said Sheppard. I was kind of blown away by it. I was kind of humbled by it because after winning it I kind of went back and looked at all the other people who have won that award in the past and I dont feel like I should have even been closely involved in it. But somebody obviously thought (it), and along with the Hockey Alberta Awards group they must have thought I did, so I guess I did, said Sheppard laughing. For the past few years Sheppard has been instrumental in getting the Pond Hockey program running and organized. She organizes a Hockey Day in GA event which will be held on Feb. 9 this year.

TIPS
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!!
We are now officially into our winter months and most people have changed their driving habits accordingly. This is the time of year where we get a lot of collision claims. Collisions are not only with valancy mitchell other vehicles, but things such Account executive as curbs, and poles, dumpsters and shopping carts that seem to H Home suddenly come out of nowhere! True story, Ive seen it happen. H FArm This brings up collision H AuTo coverage. Many people opt out of collision coverage because it can H GrouP be expensive, or the car is older ProGrAmS and its not worth anything. This is a personal choice of course BUT H CommerCIAl do you know that if you dont have H reCreATIon collision coverage, your insurance company may not help you out H lIFe with the property damage side of a claim? They might not be willing H TrAvel to discuss things with the other Take ACTION insurance company if you are in an accident with another car, and they Against High will not help you collect money or Premiums help with your repairs at all! And although you may be the best driver in the world, they certainly wont pay for repairs that need to be done when that shopping cart jumps out from behind a snowbank and rolls straight into your vehicle!! Collision coverage will sometimes kick in if you are involved in a hit and run as well, if you cant find out who caused the damage. In short, collision coverage does not just help you with the damage itself, but also dealing with repair shops, and rental cars, and lawyers if they ever become involved. It kind of makes the whole claim process a little easier for you to deal with.

Capsule Comments
Some people still use cotton-tipped applicator sticks to clean out their ears. Not a good idea. Theres a risk of puncturing the ear drum and pushing the wax in more deeply. Check with our pharmacists for safer ways of ear-cleaning. Glucosamine is often used at a dose of 500mg three times daily to lessen the pain of osteoarthritis. It does help some people and is available without a prescription. Give it at least three months to see if it works. If it is not helping by that time, it probably isnt going to. Chicken soup is often used to aid in the recovery from viral conditions like colds. This idea goes back to 60 AD when the Greek physician Dioscorides recommended it for respiratory conditions. Does it work? Chicken meat contains the amino acid cysteine which is a mild decongestant. Its worth a try. Cold sores are not caused by the common cold but by a virus called herpes simplex. They can be painful and unsightly and are contagious. They can be triggered by stress, sunlight, fever or menstruation. Some people get them twice yearly or oftener. As soon as you feel that tingling sensation on the lip, start treatment right away. Our pharmacists can you choose an appropriate product. Knowledgeable, approachable, dependable our pharmacists are all this and more. Let us fill your next prescription or advise you on the choice of a needed non-prescription product.

New County website debute

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Its a new year and a new website is online for Wheatland County. Residents can check it out at www.wheatlandcounty.ca. Staff asked for councils feedback on the site. I like that there are more photos and it is colourful, but it will need time to get comfortable with the format, said Reeve Glenn Koester. The site features pictures from various events held throughout the county and attended by councillors. Public users can post pictures as well. There is also a personalization process called My dashboard that will link with social networking sites and notify residents of new developments in designated areas. It also allows users to save information from favorite pages. An interesting improvement is that emergency alerts will top the home page, linking to information and advice about the situation. There is also an area called Community Voice where the public can input suggestions and track their forward movement. However, councillors questioned that the site will no longer store information for longer than one years time. They would like more information available for themselves and county users. Staff said storage space was a factor, but a request to the county office will allow access to specific information from previous years. Maps are online and towns, hamlets and villages will soon be able to post information on their community. There was some discussion whether private businesses would be able to post information. Councillor Ken Sauve suggested the websites purpose was to serve the community. Reeve Glenn Koester said there needed to be more discussion on the type of public information posted and the countys responsibility for updating, monitoring and maintaining it. Lets just take baby steps. Lets get our own information posted and keep it maintained, then we can see about expansions, said Reeve Koester.

SNOW CLEARING UPDATE

Citizens may notice some changes in how snow plowing/removal is completed from previous years. As per Councils revised Winter Street Maintenance Policy in 2011, snow plowing and then removal (as required) will be initiated in the following sequence: 1. Essential services access 2. Priority 1 routes arterial routes 3. Priority 2 routes collector routes 4. School zones 5. Areas where traffic flow is impeded 6. Town parking lots Attention will be given to removal of snow from the central business district roadways after priority roadways have been plowed. Wherever possible, the Town will take reasonable steps to notify citizens of snow clearing efforts, by placing signs when clearing/removal is to occur. Accumulated snow in front of private driveways and entrances caused by Town plowing is the responsibility of the owner to remove and will only be removed by the Town when: 1. Natural flow of storm water is blocked 2. In the event that the road or boulevard exceeds snow storage capacity For more information, please refer to the Winter Street Maintenance Policy on the Towns website at Strathmore.ca under Bylaws. We thank citizens for their patience and cooperation during winter operations.

SNOW REMOVAL FROM AROUND FIRE HYDRANTS

Strathmore volunteer fire fighters are asking residents for help clearing snow from fire hydrants. Recent accumulations of snow have left many fire hydrants partially or completely buried in snow, creating a potentially dangerous problems for emergency responding fire crews. Blocking access, or reducing the visibility of fire hydrants increases response time, and could result in unnecessary property damage. Firefighters need to be able to locate the fire hydrants, remove caps and attach hoses as quickly as possible. The Strathmore Fire Department would like to encourage residents to Adopt a Fire Hydrant on or near their property. This will help accessing water, and potentially save lives and property from the threat of Fire. Owners of private fire hydrants are legally responsible for and encouraged to clear snow away from their fire hydrants. This will aid in their location if an emergency were to arise requiring immediate access for Fire. For additional information or details, please contact Fire Chief (Muir) Furzer at firehall@strathmore.ca or calling 403-888-6605.

dren Brandon, 14, and Megan, 9. I have my good days and my bad days, it doesnt feel real, said Audrey. I met him when I was 22 and he was 21 and we got married July 10 of 1993, the day before his birthday. He had a very big heart, loved talking to people and hanging out with his friends. He always stood by me and vice versa. His children were his everything and he loved all his family, and extended family very much. He loved vehicles, and he loved motorbikes. His dream was to own a fabrication shop. Underground was just the beginning, he had so many ideas and he was just that determined type of person that any time he would say to me Im going to do this and I always knew he would because everything he said he would do, he would do it. Trevor and Audrey have been involved in many events around town, most notably the annual Harleys and Hot Rods that raises money for the Childrens Wish Foundation. Trevor was also at one point involved with the Strathmore Fun Runners, and being a motorbike enthusiast, could be seen at many different motorcycle events. When friends of the family first heard about the accident they immediately began planning a fundraiser to help out Audrey and her two chil-

dren. The community has been collecting and donating items, including nine downtown businesses that created two baskets filled with different items to be auctioned off. On Jan. 20 at The Strathmore Hotel from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. there will be a silent auction to raise funds. The Hotel will be donating proceeds from any sales to the family. Staff members will also be working for free and donating their tips. On Jan. 19 Marty from Strathmore Taxi will be donating a full 24 hours worth of fares to the Soroka family. I feel very humbled, I dont know if I am worthy of this but at the same time I know they want to do it and I appreciate it. Everything is very overwhelming and I do appreciate everything everybody has been doing, said Audrey. I know Trevor will too because I know his worry is that me and the kids are taken care of and we will be. Its the not having him here any more my big, tall, strong man and thats going to be the hardest part. Since the death of his father in August, Strathmores Joeys Only owner Dave Lyall has been struggling to make it through each day. On August 20, less than 10 days after marrying his long time girlfriend Alex, Lyall and his dad Craig went for a motorcycle ride. That day his father was involved in a fatal accident in front of him. Its been a struggle ever since to kind of keep going. We went from the best day to the worst day all within 10 days and its just been a struggle trying to keep everything going, said Lyall. I want to thank everybody for their loyalty and patronage over the last two and a half years. Unfortunately due to a life changing family incident on August 20 when I lost my dad who was a percentage owner and due to the estate situation we were forced to close our doors. We were honoured to have the Me-

dium Business of the Year (Chamber of Commerce) award for 2012. We decided that it would maybe be best to close now (rather) than six months from now when everybody is burnt out and tired. Lyall and his family have moved to High River, to be closer to his mom and to his daughter, while taking care of his fathers Joeys Only restaurant. Doing the commute from High River to Strathmore to manage both businesses put too much strain on his mother. The pressure on the staff here to try to operate things while Lyall isnt here also would have been too great. Lyall plans to remain a member with the Strathmore Lions, stating he will need a break from High River a few times a month. High River is only 45 minutes away so when the weather is nice he encourages people to take a trip that way for some good fish and for a visit. We worked real hard to return the reputation of this location and it is cur-

rently for sale. If anyone is interested they can contact Joeys Only for more information, said Lyall. Contact Rob at Joeys Corporate office 403-243-4584 for more information about purchasing the location or Dave Lyall at Joeys Only in High River.

Dave Churchill, Manager of Transportation and Infrastructure for Wheatland County, reported back to council inquiries that it would cost about $8,000 per vehicle to convert county trucks to dual-fuel gasoline/natural gas tanks. He estimated that fill-ups would cost $40-$50. Filling up can be dangerous and it is pretty easy to burn fingers because the fuel temperature is below zero, said Churchill. There is a big potential for compressed fuel accidents. He said there were other complications such as: switching tanks, the lack of stations delaying work days by 30 minutes the BTU of the fuel was lower, so would encumber pulling power, trade in required at lower mileage pressure in the tanks require certifications and testing training would be needed and the installation site was in Edmonton I would recommend the county not be a partner in this. I dont think it is feasible and it might be a sort of nuisance to the guys, said Churchill. Council considered the information and may address the prospect in the

future, when the infrastructure is more developed. Public works Public works crews are doing brushcutting safety clinics. They are preparing crews to clear road hazards and areas affected by damage during storms. Basically, we will be clearing anything that causes sight problems, said Dave Churchill, Manager of Transportation and Infrastructure. He asked councillors to advise the department of any areas in their divisions that might need work. Churchill said plow crews are also busy with many duties at the start of the New Year. Snow plow activity and sanding is ongoing, as needed, and in off times crews will be removing snow from villages and hamlets. Work has started in Carseland, with Gleichen scheduled next. Gravel and rap application on Hammerhill road is also nearing completion. There is an open house scheduled for landowners affected by 2013 construction of Twp. Rd 232 between Range Road 235 and Hwy. 1. It will be held on Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the County office and the Division councillor and Reeve will be present. Staff are listing Bridge projects for 2013-2015, in anticipation of upcoming work. They are anticipating road closures with a road detour for the work

near Rosebud, Bridge file 40198. Councillor Ken Sauve asked Churchill whether staff could notify councillors of any complaints in their districts, so they may address any issues and eliminate any confusion. sign removal Churchill asked for direction from council, on confusing signage at the intersection of Twp 270 and RR245. The intersection used to be a T intersection and a boundary between two divisions in the county. When the road extension completed, traffic signs were posted as a warning to the public of changes to the road. There are stop signs on the east-west roads and yield signs on the northsouth. The north-south road is busier with a lot of truck traffic. One suggestion was to make it into a four way stop. County officers checked the road and staff suggested that the yield signs be removed. Council approved the removal of the yield signs. I hope it doesnt encourage people to speed on the road, said Councillor Brenda Knight. There is a single axle truck and Class 8 highway tractor tender up for bids, closing on Jan. 25, 2013. Letters to the editor

Good honest folks

To the Editor Last week a letter was published asking for pails of cookie dough to be returned after it was discovered that they were placed in the wrong vehicle. I am happy to say that the cookie dough has come back to the rightful owner and I am very pleased to say that there are still some very honest folks in the County of Wheatland. Thanks to Joanne for writing the letter and thanks to the folks who returned the cookie dough. My next truck will be a pink one so I can tell mine from all the other black trucks. A fur rug
Pat Fule Fule for Thought Our dog, Brodie, like other dogs, plays fetch. The problem with our dog though, is that hell only fetch once. I think he figures if he pushes himself too hard, something bad might happen. Its really our fault, we picked him from a litter for that reason. We asked the breeder to call us when she had a quiet pup. We went to see the litter, and there he was, brown and white, with a brown patch over his lazy right eye. He was the largest in the litter, and while his brothers and sisters were yipping, yapping, and falling over each other, he crawled back to a corner to sleep. All four of said (almost at once) THATS the dog for us! So, its no wonder that Brodie is probably the worlds worst fetcher. Its a rare occasion when hell fetch twice, and then he pretty much has to sit and rest. If there is a third time, we wonder if we have the right dog! If you own a dog, and leave the house for a while, theres nothing better than your arrival home. The dog will celebrate your return, and he is always incredibly excited and happy to see you. I swear, no matter what type of bad day youve had, that love and greeting you get at home, can brighten any day! This is where Brodie does his best one-time fetch. He races to his toy basket, gets Frosty his favorite polar bear, and races to shake the crap out of it in front of you! Ive never understood why he does this, because thats about the only energetic thing Ive seen him do! I always wonder what he does while were away, because we see the odd toy out, but no signs of playing. I guess to him, playing with toys is just pulling them out of his basket and leaving them around the house! Hes almost 13, and has lost a lot of hearing. At least, I think that, until I am unwrapping something from plastic. THATs the noise that, no matter what, will bring him running, and his begging begins. How can a dog, so deaf, he cant hear me enter the house, hear a slight wrapper opening? Hes also a master at finding candy he knows to search Breannes room, as thats the most likely source, usually left on her floor. Weve often found him with candy wrappers marking a trail right to him, as he happily licks his treasure, even if its a Halls throat lozenge! Hed actually be a great bomb dog if bombs were ever hidden in candy. Of course hed probably explode himself! Brodie is also a dog of irony. Hes got a couple of favorite chew bones, but hes had 11 teeth pulled, so he never really chews these. He just carries them around. Then hell assemble them near where he is lying, and go to sleep. His last two chew bones have lasted over a year its kind of sad that he cant really do anything with them anymore! Of course, theres nothing like stepping on one to drive the pain through your sole. Then, hes happy again, like youve found his missing treasure! Walking our dog in the Winter is absolutely useless. Brodie hates the snow and cold, so if you DO take him out, hell last about a block, curl up into a ball, and refuse to move. He acts as if hes going to die. There have been many times Ive given up, and carried him home! All our neighbours have gotten used to these walks, or rather carries. Oh well, since hes also gotten a bit fat, its given me some weight training, too! Brodie also thinks every dog and person are his pals. On a Summer walk, he pulled harder and harder to see a big dog through its chain link fence. I warned Brodie not to get too close, but he was too excited to listen. Sure enough, the big dog sniffed him a few times, lifted his leg, and peed on Brodies head! I laughed so hard, I think it embarrassed my dog he sort of slunk home with me shaking off his head at times! We made the mistake of teaching Brodie to ring a wind chime on our back door, when he wanted to go out. It may sound cute, and like a great way to know when he has to relieve himself, BUT he rings it on a regular basis now. We trained him by giving him a treat when he went out it was SUPPOSED to condition HIM. However, WERE the ones who come running when he rings, and HE gets a treat when he returns! I can just imagine what hes thinking: hmmmm if I ring this thing, the big guy lets me out for fresh air. Then all I have to do is slam the door with my paws, and they let me in. And to top it off, they FEED me for this? Im livin the dream! Hes actually taking it too far now. If he sees me on the computer or playing PS3, hell give me a bored look and head for that damn wind chime! It was a big mistake training him! So, if you ever see out one night carrying a brown/white fur ball, youll know its another failed try at walking the dog! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Recent issues of dust control, notifications and resident complaints have generated a need for the agreement that would also deal with water quality and testing issues. Encana should have an agreement with us, said Chief Administrative Officer Jennifer Deak. In the past, a gentlemans agreement had asked that contractors notify the county by phone of scheduled work dates. It was suggested that if contractors couldnt reach anyone in off hours, notifications were sometimes missed. They may stop notifying us if they cant get confirmation, said Councillor Ken Sauve. In one instance, a contentious issue led the ERCB to direct an enforcement order on Encana, but expected the county to monitor compliance. The county mediated between the resident, Encana and subcontractor working for Encana. It was noted that Encana has a three strikes out policy with subcontractors, who dont adhere to regulation guidelines. ERCB has the requirements. It should be up to them to enforce it, said Reeve Glenn Koester. There was discussion whether other businesses requiring testing and disposal regulations, should also have working agreements. There was consensus that the County had to take some responsibility for developing a better process for work agreements. There is a lot of work yet to be done. Moving forward, we will have a policy of what needs to be done, said Reeve Koester. Disaster training postponeD Emergency disaster training sessions are on hold, until WFCSS staff move into their county offices. Currently there are not enough people registered to hold the course. Gerald Skibinsky, Manager of Protective Services, Fire, Disaster, and Safety Coordinator for the county said he would like to discuss disaster issues with Sharon Tibeau, the WFCSS coordinator, before running the training sessions. I would like her to have a chance to work with the village and hamlets, to set some of the organizational details up, said Skibinsky. He said the WFCSS coordinated role will be to provide for the health, welfare, sleeping arrangements and food provisions in emergencies. Tibeau had coordinated a system, when the offices

With WFCSS moving into County offices during the last week of January, the delay in training courses would allow them to settle in and include all their staff in the training. strathmore ag gets no waiver The Strathmore and District Ag Society asked for a waiver on their 2012 taxes. Council voted the waiver down stating that no other Ag Societies in the county receive waivers. They will have to pay the $456 tax. waDemsa upDate WADEMSA listed 3,043 response calls in 2012. Reeve Koester said the crews have been extremely busy, with up to 23 responses in one workday. He commended the staff for their dedicated service to the community. The service hosted a tour of the dispatch centre for area fire chiefs and response was good. The event will occur once a year. Fire permit changes WADEMSA is requesting that residents with crop burning fire permits dont call 911, prior to firing their crops. It was a process done in the past, but is not now required. Copies of the permits are faxed to WADEMSA, when the permit is approved. However, if residents have a fire emergency with a runaway burn, they should call 911 for assistance. Fire meetings The observation tours of the fire halls are almost complete, excluding Dalum and Cluny, which have not given a date for their hall tour. A lot of departments have made large movements forward, said Skibinsky. The next Fire Review meeting is set in Hussar on Jan. 17.

Wheatland County councillors submitted their views, in a resolution proposal to the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Communities (AAMDC) zone office, regarding the Countys stance on Resource Development in Alberta. It includes a call to halt Coalbed Methane retrieval and the use of hydraulic fracture practises until protective methods are developed. Subsequent to natural resource exploration and activities, concerns have been received from landowners, reporting a decline in their water levels and contamination of their water wells, including and not limited to sulphur gases. Other residents have reported changes in land formations, opening of natural springs and sinkholes. While there is no proven link between these incidences and natural resource exploration, some residents are of the opinion that fracking activities have initiated these occurrences. We need to ensure the protections of our environment and

our water - our most valuable natural resource, Wheatland councillors stated in their member background report. Wheatland councillors are not alone in concerns about the current technology used for unconventional oil and gas development. The fracturing of deep rock formations with water, sand and chemicals is a non-linear process that can open fractures to freshwater formations, as well as other oil and gas wells. Also, in absence of the public reporting on fracking chemicals, industry water withdrawals and full mapping of the provinces aquifers, rapid shale gas development could potentially threaten important water resources. An example is the Horn River Basin in British Columbia that has a distinctive geology and hydraulic fracturing that has caused rare and minor seismic activity, they stated. In September 2012, an investigation by the ERCB confirmed operator error in leaking frac fluid, contaminating of a water well in Grande Prairie. Continued on Page 12

Saving precious water from the fracking process

Continued from Page 10 In December 2012, similar issues appeared a national study conducted by the US Environmental Protection agency www.epa.gov/hfstudy/pdfs. They found chemicals in wells and ground water close to hydraulic fracturing sites. The final report is set for release in 2014, leaving time for industry response. Water is the worlds most precious resource and one frac takes up to 7 million gallons of water. The water used comes from the closest above ground source, or underground aquifers. Fresh water, if brackish or saline water is not available. Chemicals are added, or the water absorbs chemicals from the rock formations, leaving the fresh water unusable. Reuse of the water is encouraged by the industry, but it is sometimes impractical. Contaminated water is then disposed of in underground cavities, or sealed in abandoned wells. Public information on chemicals used, or where they are disposed of is not currently available in Alberta, however as of Dec. 31, info will be posted on www.fracfocus.org. The venting and flaring of gas to relieve well pressure increases greenhouse gases, and several studies show health issues like respiratory illnesses result. No provisions by companies or government compensate human disability or animal health issues in flare areas. Increased evidence of hydraulic fracturing generates seismic activity and causes earthquakes is mounting. In December 2012, the American Geophysical Union www.agu.org supported this. Studies in Oklahoma showed earthquake activity increased in 2011, from one to three a year, up to 250. Fluid injection was as close as 250 metres from the quakes. Studies in BC, Northern Alberta, Colorado, New Mexico, Trindad, and Britain show similar conclusions. Ohio had a moratorium on wastewater injection and only reopened permits with tougher regulation. The future probably holds a lot more in induced earthquakes as the gas boom expands, said US Geological Society researcher Art McGarr, in the MIT Technology review. Many want a moratorium on fracking practises that would allow new environmentally sensitive technologies to develop. One recent innovation is a new gel made of liquefied petroleum gas developed by GASFRAC www.gasfrac.com , which will replace water in fracking operations. Wheatland councillors state new ways should be developed for resource extraction that would protect the environment. They suggested the government and industry take the following measures: Take necessary steps to ensure natural resource exploration doesnt pose a threat to our environment Require industry reports prior to the commencement of exploration Evaluate geological conditions with a pre and post monitoring for seismic activity Protect surface and groundwater supplies by imposing a minimum well borne casing depth below aquifer zones. Wheatlands recommendations went to the AAMDC District one office for compilation with other southern Alberta municipalities. The district will vote on the resolution Jan. 18, in Lethbridge. If accepted, it goes to the Association head office, who compiles it with other district submissions. A vote at the March Spring Convention occurs by all the membership. If it passes, the Alberta Minister of Municipal affairs receives a copy for response.

Snow makes for slow go

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The cold weather and snowy roads are challenging for many seniors and handicapped people. Lynn Walker, Coordinator for WFCSS Strathmore has solutions to conquer some of the winter woes. WFCSS offers snow removal, companion services, and arrangements for transportation to registered clients. Snow shovelling is a part of the home support program. If they are a senior, disabled or just have had surgery or something and are unable to do that sort of thing, they can phone and we come out and do an assessment and get them set up, said Walker. Seniors are over age 65. Anyone recovering from surgery or an injury, or someone recovering from a chronic illness can use the services. There is a fee, on a sliding scale, with subsidization from the government. The program is flexible as to the amount of services the person needs. Call 403-934-5335 or email coordinator@wfcss.org. Walker said that she has close to 60 people using the snow services and over 140 clients. There are trained companions available that help clients with mobility issues and aid them in getting in and out of vehicles safely. They will accompany clients to appointments, but do not drive them. There are shopping services when someone cant get out. The client makes up a list and shoppers bring the items to the door. The Handibus is one mode of transportation that is available for doctors appointments. People can phone the service and schedule a drop-off and pickup. It is a $7- $10 flat fee in town and $55 out of town. There is a $50/ hour fee for trips over six hours. Call (403) 934-3418 to confirm details and book. For social events, many of the seniors groups book the 20-passenger bus for $350. The driver does pickup, waits and drives them back after the event. The Plus 55 Club also offers trips to Calgary shopping centres, a different one each week, for the cost of $20 return. People meet in at the Strathmore Seniors Drop in Centre next to the Strathmore Library. For more information on times, call: 901-1596. Members of the Plus 55 Club said they were satisfied with snow removal on the towns roads and streets, except in front of unoccupied residences. Melva Envoldsen suggested it was time that the town provided a bus service for the residents. She said it is difficult for some people to get to the businesses that have moved from downtown to the Ranch commercial area, on the east side of Strathmore. Sharon Tibeau, Coordinator for Wheatland FCSS said that transportation is a huge issue. She would like to see more grant money directed at the issue. Walking and exercise for seniors and the disabled is often part of their health and rehabilitation regime. Manny EvErEtt Annually across the country we celebrate Minor Hockey Week. The week is a way to recognize the sport for its positive influence Times Contributor
and benefits to the community, while also recognizing the people who bring it all together from organizers to players.

Minor Hockey Week

ers. This is the second year the two have teamed up for this age category and it is a great mix of kids. The kids are enjoying playing together and making new friendships throughout the season with their neighboring community. The Tier 4 combined team have had 5 wins and 6 losses and have tied 2 games so far this season. They practice hard every Wednesday for an hour and a half, alternating between Hussar and Bassano so it is equal driving for everyone involved. The team plays against the other 10 teams in the Tier 4 category including Chestermere, Strathmore, Cremona, Claresholm, Fort

Rockyford Minor Hockey having a great season

Rockyford Minor Hockey has 55 players registered this season within its four teams. The Initiation team has a full roster of 19. They have not played any games yet however their first tournament is scheduled for January 19-21. The Novice Tier 5 team is one of the top teams in their division with 8 wins and 6 losses. They have a total of 16 players and are also hosting their home tournament this weekend. Rockyford Hockey had 20 players try out for the Atom team. With only 10 players on each team they are quickly becoming very well conditioned. The Atom Tier 4 team has 1 win and 11 losses and the Atom Tier 6 team has 11 losses and 1 tie. None of these teams would be here without the countless hours that the parents and volunteers put in coaching, managing, driving, finding referees, planning tournaments and cheering the players on. Their biggest challenge this year was to get every parent and coach to complete a Respect in Sport course online, which is a positive and proactive move for the sport. All the Rockyford players are working hard, improving, and most importantly playing the game they love.

The Hussar Novice Knights having good year

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The Hussar Novice Knights hockey team this year consists of sixteen players in the rural Tier 4 category. Fifty per cent of the team consists of players from Hussar and the other 50 per cent are Bassano playMacLeod, Brooks, Duchess, Oyen, Siksika and Nanton. The parents are a dedicated bunch. So are their coaches : Kevin Slemko, Rob Miller, Floyd Barron, wayne Papp and Brett Filkohazy. The kids and parents look forward to many years of hockey ahead and just having fun on the ice.

Wheatland AA program as strong as ever

Shannon LECLair Times Reporter The Wheatland AA teams had a good season last year, and this year looks to be going just as well. The peewee team is in first place in the North Division and second in the league overall. Wheatland AA President Sandy Henry said they have a really good peewee team this year. Bantam is second in the North Division and the Midget team is kind of in the middle of the pack. Im not surprised by it, I think the peewees are a bit of a surprise, the peewee group is usually a lot of fresh faces from other programs so you never quite know what has happened out there, or where theyre going to come from or what your players look like because theyre still in their own communities at that point and we bring them together, said Henry. I would say our communities have done a really good job of developing some real quality players and our peewee coach has been able to put them together into a pretty entertaining, viable group. As with other hockey groups, raising fees was a concern for the AA. No association ever wants to hear kids cant play because of the cost. An extensive analysis was done over the past year to determine what the fees should be that would represent the actual cost. The Wheatland AA do host casinos to help keep organizational costs down. The casinos have gone from being held every two years to every three which leaves the association looking for ways to make the money stretch out. After the analysis was complete the fees went up, but there were also components added to the program. Teams have looked for a little sponsorship with their game day programs, which gives them a little bit of extra money to work with. Fees are $2,500 per player; silent auction and casino moneys go back to the teams. For our fees, the fees our parents paid this year theyre going to get about between 5 and 60 hockey games and two practices a week. The per ice time value of what our teams pay is pretty good value, even compared to minor hockey. Its very comparable when you put it down to a per game basis, or a per ice time basis, said Henry. One of the joys Henry gets out of being the AA President is he gets to watch the kids grow, both as people and as players as they progress through the hockey levels. I think the satisfaction certainly is the players, its the kids youre doing it for, thats the satisfaction. Watching them grow up and find what theyre going to like in life, even if it isnt hockey, said Henry. Its just the opportunity to give kids something that theyll remember for the rest of their years, give them a peer group and opportunity thats the satisfaction in the whole thing and thats why were all in doing it. Even in the short term, seeing kids improve and grow throughout even just one season is something he enjoys about his role with hockey.

Pond hockey a success in Standard and Gleichen

Shannon LECLair & Manny EvErEtt The biggest challenge that pond hockey in Standard has faced this year was the organizing of the 4 to 17-year-old participants. A full roster of 21 hockey players, most of which are in the 4-6 year old range, are enjoying the game on a regular basis. Dallas Nelson, who has grown up playing hockey in Standard, is now a dad who is watching his 5-year-old son Colby grow fond of the sport and enjoy being on the ice. Nelson says, it sure is great having hockey back in Standard. One of the most positive things for this year has been the growth of the kids in their skating, skills and abilities. Doug Blaney has helped out with the sport again this year as well as with power skating. Blaney says that it is great to see the involvement of so many parents willing to even come on the ice with the kids. Standard has a fantastic facility and watching the kids it is amazing how quickly they have improved. The tykes team will be attending their first tournament this weekend in Rockyford. The future goals of course is to expand the program to bring hockey back to the forefront in the community and hopefully turn out full teams of tykes, peewees, novice etc , says Stephanie Nelson (Registrar for the Standard group). It has been great to just welcome back hockey into the community and it is another whole new generation coming out of the woodwork. The novice boys are coached by Doug Blaney, Dave Ellis and Steve Marshman while the tykes team is coached mainly by Jason Gauthier, Dallas Nelson, Trent Sundgaard and Jason Semeniuk. Registration numbers on a steady climb for Minor Hockey

Shannon LECLair Times Reporter Enrollment numbers for Strathmore Minor Hockey (SMH) are still strong and show a steady stream of interest coming from the community. The continually increasing response from the community, however, also is the cause of some concern for board members. Ice time has been an ongoing concern for the association. I think in general a good majority of our teams are competitive, weve continued to tweak the evaluation process in order to continue to grow the association. Like every association thats growing our problem is our numbers are growing so big that it presents other challenges, said SMH President Wayne Hansen. I would say in the next couple of years Strathmore Minor Hockeys going to have to look at becoming a capped association because we dont have ice. What that means is that people that want to play wont be able to play and to me thats unfortunate. There has also been a concern about fees restricting the ability to play for some kids. Part of the problem, Hansen said, is people dont know there are programs out there to help families with getting their kids out and playing sports. Canadian Tire Jumpstart is one such program. Last year a successful bid was made to host the 2013 and 2014 Alberta Cup in Strathmore. The Alberta Cup is a premier bantam hockey event, focused on players aged 14. Its a wellscouted event, with estimates coming in that there will be 150 scouts with many coming from the Western Hockey League (WHL). Hansen believes the Alberta Cup will bring in money that will allow the association to help those kids, who maybe cant afford to play, get on the ice. Theres going to be a legacy that comes out of the Alberta Cup thats left for minor hockey, said Hansen. Hansen has been President of SMH for the past two years and has no plan of leaving just yet. Its my way of giving back to a game that gave so much to me. Hockey to me growing up was everything, I played a lot of years, I played for some great coaches, played on some fantastic teams and I met some great people whether they were coaches, whether they were players. It taught me more than just hockey it taught me life skills, so to me its my way of giving back, said Hansen.

Pond hockey keeps the fun in the game

Continued from Page 15
It was in 2009 that pond hockey was brought to the hamlet of Gleichen. It began with 13 kids registered, and in 2013 there are over 80. The numbers have been increasing steadily as each year goes by and as the popularity of the program rises. Some kids are new to the program and a few kids decided to do different things over the winter months. There are some players who have left pond hockey to play in mainstream hockey, and others who have left mainstream hockey to join pond hockey this year. The biggest challenge is probably the amount of kids we have on the ice on the Tuesdays and the Thursdays. Theres just so many kids on the ice on both those days that were probably going to have to change up the way we do things, said President Cara Sheppard. By change it up, Sheppard thinks they will have kids of certain ages coming in at a different time and instead of having an hour and a half time slot, there will be two one hour slots per night. Another issue is that some of the kids that have come over from mainstream hockey are the older kids and finding ways to challenge them can be tough. Pond hockey is for fun and is not competitive and is non-contact, which can be tough for the mainstream hockey players to adjust to when they initially make the switch. Gleichen pond hockey players play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Monday is for kids 10 and older and Tuesday and Thursday are for kids aged 4-17. They are then divided into two smaller groups based on age. There are dividers put onto the ice and for the first part of their ice session the kids are learning the skill of the game. For the rest of the time they divide up into teams and play shinny style hockey. Despite being called pond hockey, the kids do not play on a pond. The name is derived from the sport going back to its origins and the fun side of the game.

The best investments are fun to watch grow.

Our children are the most precious investment. Scotiabank proudly supports the team and and everyone who dedicates their time and e ort to its success. Thank you for the opportunity to participate.

The Alberta Cup Program begins in March each year with over 1000 players trying out at their respective zone camps. There are eight Alberta Cup zones and each player is attempting to land 1 of 20 spots on each of the eight teams. The eight zone teams will then compete in the Alberta Cup Tournament in April of each year. Athletes eligible for the 2012 Alberta Cup program are male players that were born in 1998.

Rosebud announces 2013 season

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Another year has begun and with it comes fresh resolutions, good intentions, and the announcement of the 2013 theatre season in the artsy hamlet of Rosebud. Season tickets are already on sale, and the actors are busy preparing for the first show of the season, Barefoot in the Park which will be on stage from March 22 until May 11. One of the things that inspired the show was that in Rosebud often youll see couples that are 65 or 70-years-old walking down the street holding hands, its a beautiful picture. Barefoot in the Park its about a brand new marriage. Its about youve just come off the honeymoon and youre nesting for the very first time, said Artistic Director for Rosebud Theatre Morris Ertman. If you saw The Gifts of the Magi in 2011 then Barefoot in the Park will seem like a new variation of that same tale, only quirkier and crazier. The same two actors, Cassia Schramm and Aaron Krogman will again be playing husband, Paul, and wife, Corie. The humour from the play comes from the idea of that idyllic point of view that young newlyweds have and it seems to come from the fact that the wife in the story believes she is in the centre of paradise, while in reality they live in a run-down apartment. Paul knows that it is time to get to work and begin to settle into married life. The play is in the season to make people laugh and is a witty and funny recollection of what it means to be newly married. When I think about a lot of folks that come to Rosebud I think about marriages that are 50-years-old or 30-years-old, or 35-years-old and I think what was it like for those people when they first got married, said Ertman. Brooks, AlBertA (403) 362-5521 When people talk about marriage they talk about those first days where they didnt have any money, and they lived in their parents basement but they were these sort of glorious discovery times. Cotton Patch Gospel written by Tom Key and Russell Treyz will follow after the tale of the newlyweds beginning May 31 to August 24. This is a story that has some of the most wonderful bluegrass tunes ever written I think and theyre written by Harry Chapin who wrote Cats in the Cradle and Taxi and it was the last music that he wrote before he died. There are those who say it is actually his best, said Ertman. It is the story of Jesus set in the Deep South, and is about what would happen if he showed up during the time when the Ku Klux Klan existed, what would it be like. Ertman said the story telling is folksy and humorous, and but also has songs that will get your hearts melting or your toes tapping. Why are we doing it, well were doing it because its the story of probably the most significant figure in human history, Jesus being that figure, said Ertman. Whatever you might think about that character, that person in history, whatever people might believe about him, the truth is 2,000 years ago he hung out in Palestine and something changed. Underneath the Lintel: An impressive display of lovely evidences by Glen Berger will be on the studio stage July 3 to August 24. If I was to say the theme for our whole season, the theme is basically you matter, you as a person matter, your life makes a difference, and I would say thats the underlying theme for the whole season is your life makes a difference, said Ertman. In this story a nerdy, kind of dorky librarian, played by beloved Rosebud veteran Nathan Schmidt, ends up leaving the library because he has found a book that is 123 years overdue. He is determined to present the borrower with the fine. Ertman said this play is where the seeds for the theme of the season grew from. There is a moment in the play when the librarian discovers an ancient recording from the early 1900s with a voice on it saying Im here, Im here. Its all about this guy, this 2,000-yearold guy who just wants to be seen, wants his life to be known. Continued on Page 25

Rosebud ready for 2013

Continued from Page 24 This quirky, quirky librarian, almost a nutty professor type of guy, winds up uncovering this mystery about this guy who just wants the world to know hes there, said Ertman. Our Town by Thornton Wilder is the fall show, which will grace the stage from Sept. 13 to Oct. 19. This is a play that I have wanted to put on the stage for 30 years, since early in my life in the theatre. Why? Again it really, really illustrates that theme, that notion that your life within the context of a huge cosmos matters. Its a celebration of ordinary, said Ertman. He said there are parents of some of the Rosebud students who wanted to be big performers who didnt follow their dreams. They settled into working in a small town and raising their family and Ertman thinks those people are extraordinary. This play is a celebration of the drama, the everyday drama of life, people being passionate about life, and its not about whether they are going to change the world, they are passionate about how they care about one another, or prepare for a wedding. I think its celebrates our humanity, our core humanity in a way that should be celebrated. Its a celebration of family, a celebration of love, young love, of marriage, of growing up, said Ertman. Our Town reminds him of the film Field of Dreams and the moment when they find a doctor in a small town who could have gone out and been a baseball star, but instead stayed to serve his community. The thing that matters most to us is how we relate to our parents, to our community, to our wives, our loved ones, thats what actually carries eternal significance, said Ertman. The ideas and story told in Our Town spins over in a big way to the final show of the season Its a Wonderful Life. Written by Phillip Grecian, Its a Wonderful Life will be shown from Nov. 1 to Dec. 22. George Bailey is a guy who wanted to follow big dreams and at the end of the day hes on a bridge thinking about throwing himself in the water because everything has gone to hell, said Ertman. He doesnt think hes mattered and George Bailey finds out that his simple acts of service to his community, and to his family make him a giant. Ertman said that is one of the reasons why people love Its a Wonderful Life at Christmas time.

Hale looks forward to positive year

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Earlier this month, Strathmore Times interviewed Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale about his reflections on 2012. We reported that, during the Fall Legislative Session, Mr. Hale put forth 13 amendments to the Responsible Energy Development Act, many pertaining to the rights of property owners. Some pertained to the streamlining of the energy regulatory process. We also reported that MLA Hale was pleased some of those proposed amendments had passed. However, that was not accurate. In fact, Mr. Hale was disappointed that none of his 13 proposed amendments pertaining to the Responsible Energy Development Act passed. However, Mr. Hale is pleased that Cabinet no longer has power to decide the locations of energy transmission lines. He is also pleased that, in fall, the government itself proposed revisions to the new Education Act changes reflecting the concerns expressed by Wildrose MLAs last spring, when the government first proposed the new Education Act. Mr. Hale discussed those proposed changes with those whod be most impacted by the new Act -- faith-based educators, home educators, and the public school board. When he found they all supported the newly-revised Act, Hale supported it in the Legislature. Mr. Hale continues to be proud and grateful to serve the people of StrathmoreBrooks as MLA, and invites constituents to stop in and see him, or call him, at any time. His Strathmore office, located in the Chamber of Commerce building, is open to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their new phone number is 403-934-4400.

Backyard hockey lives on in Standard

The weather has been cooperative this year for outdoor hockey. it was a super opportunity for Standard Dad Floyd DesRoche to make his family a small rink in his backyard. The whole family got behind the idea and have even used floodlights to have impromptu games outside at night. Local kids geared up this weekend at the DesRoche backyard for what mom Christine called the BYHL (Backyard Hockey League). Before arenas ever existed this is what Canadians used to skate on, whether it was ponds, sloughs or homemade rinks flooding backyards. Have fun the rest of the season guys.

After their game was cancelled the night before because of the local state of emergency, the Wheatland Chiefs extended their winning streak to six games with a 4-1 victory over the Foothills Bisons on Jan. 13.

Chiefs climbing
Mario Prusina Times Editor A six-game winning streak has propelled the Wheatland Chiefs to within two points of second place in the South Division of the SCAHL. The local double-A midget team, which currently sits in sixth place in the standings in a very tight division, defeated the Foothills Bisons 4-1 on Jan. 13 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Brandon Russell and Wyatt Rabbit Carrier each registered a goal and an assist, while Coltyn Herman and Dalton Dubetz each scored for the Chiefs, who built a 4-0 lead en route to the win. Tyler Sharuga added a pair of assists in the win, while Kristian Ayoungman and Brayden Biccum each registered an assist. The Chiefs were originally scheduled to face the Red Deer Pro-Stitch on Jan. 12, but the game was cancelled because of Strathmores local state of emergency when the main pipeline into town ruptured. The Chiefs will look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they host the Innisfail Flyers on Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre. Braves Back on track The Wheatland Braves have responded with a pair of victories after losing their second game of the season. The local double-A peewee team hammered the Taber Golden Suns 8-1 on Jan. 11 in Hussar, before destroying Airdrie 14-3 the following day on the road. According to Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen, he was pleased with the way his team responded against Taber after losing the weekend before. (That was) as complete of game by all the guys as weve had this year, said Klemmensen in a text message to the Times. (We) outshot them 55-8, hit at least eight crossbars. The score could have been more lopsided, but the important thing was the 60 (minute) effort. The Braves followed that game with a dominant game over Airdrie, despite a minor lull late in the first period. According to Klemmensen, even though the level of competition was not as high as the weekend before, the Braves elevated their level play, which indicates some intellectual maturity starting to take hold. The Braves will now take part in an exhibition tournament before resuming league play on Feb. 2. Warriors Win The Wheatland Warriors improved to 15-6-4 on the season after an 8-2 road win over the Foothills Bisons on Jan. 12. The local double-A bantam team built a 7-0 lead en route to the win. Kody Hammond scored three goals, while Regan Kinley added two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Warriors. Alec Biletsky added a goal and two assists, while Matt Quigley added a goal and an assist. The Warriors will now host the Airdrie Lightning on Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar.

Basketball alive and well east of Strathmore

While hockey and ringette continue to be the dominant sport in the winter season, the sport of basketball is number one for other kids in the area. Standard school hosted two games against Siksikas junior high boys and girls teams on Jan. 9. Both games were won by the Siksika teams and all the kids seemed to enjoy themselves. Standard has a co-ed team for Junior High due to numbers which unfortunately prevents them from playing with the Strathmore schools. Standard school continues to provide their kids with extracurricular activities and coaches regardless of numbers so that their kids have an opportunity to be active and play.

Bisons regroup after lengthy break

Mario Prusina Times Editor After a disastrous December, the UFA Bisons took time away from the rink and regrouped heading into the 2013 portion of the regular season schedule. After the first couple of games back, it looks like the break was just what the doctor ordered. The local triple-A midget team travelled to Northern Alberta and picked up a pair of wins over the Lloydminster Bobcats and the Edmonton SSAC Athletics Jan. 12-13. The mentality (was to use the break) as a fresh start, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen. We spend a lot of time last week (talking) about where we were, where we thought we should be and (find) some reasons for what has gone on so far. We really stressed that now its about winning thats going to be our purpose for the rest of the season. The guys really bought into that mentality and you can sense it and feel it in the room there was a lot of positive energy. We came up here anticipating getting two wins and we got the job done. After playing a ton of hockey to finish 2012, between the regular season and the Macs Midget Hockey Tournament, the Bisons used the break to their advantage. It was huge, just in terms of a mental break and a physical break, said Friesen. Sometimes when you go through a bunch of adversity like we have, you just need to spend a little time away from each other and come back here and appreciate what we have. You need to refocus and recharge your batteries and then come back and reinvest in yourself. One through 20, we had everybody going this weekend. According to Friesen, he wanted his team to ignore their record thus far and start 2013 with a clean slate. The Bisons got off to strong start when they used three power play goals to up-end the Bobcats 5-3 on Jan. 12. They got a little undisciplined and we were rewarded with three power play goals. Thats more power play goals in one game than our previous 15 games combined, so thats encouraging for us, joked Friesen. We moved the puck really well and we created some scoring opportunities. According to Friesen, the Bisons practiced their special teams against the Wheatland Chiefs double-A midget team during the break and the results paid off. It was a fresh idea they dont know what we like to do on our penalty kill or power play and vice-versa for us, said the coach. So it (was great) for practicing and trying to execute under pressure and developing that sense of urgency. It really helped us and put things into perspective. The Bisons capped off the weekend with a solid 4-3 win over the Athletics on Jan. 13. It might have been our most consistent game of the (season), said Friesen. We had two breakdowns in the second period that they capitalized on, but our guys didnt break. We didnt get on the fence like we used to we got right back to work and capitalized on our chances. The Bisons will look to get back on track at the Strathmore Family Centre this coming weekend when they host a pair of divisional rivals. The Herd will take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Jan 19 (5:15 p.m.) before tangling with the Calgary NW Flames the following day (2 p.m.).

Breakers back in action

The Strathmore ice Breakers had a great rest over the holidays and were ready for action Jan. 5 when they hosted indus. The girls played hard, but ran out of steam and lost 12-8. The ice Breakers got back to their winning ways with a great team effort on home ice versus Brooks on Jan. 12, winning 12-5. The following day, they traveled to Airdrie and earned a hard fought victory over Airdrie 7-5. The girls will travel to Vulcan this coming weekend for a double header. Go ice Breakers!!

The family of Val Holtan says goodbye to a gentle and loved soul. Val passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the age of 96 years. Born Valborg Matilda Louise Seppala in Northern Alberta, Val was the niece of Leonard Seppala, a dog sled driver known for his heroic work in the early 20th century in Alaska. Val worked as a nurse at the Ponoka Hospital in her early years but settled with her husband Harold in the town of Gleichen in 1957. Gleichen was her home until 2005. She was passionate about gardening, loved good conversation and a cup of coffee with her friends and never shied away from a game of crib. Val was predeceased by her husband Harold in 2006. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Lee and husband Cam McGillivray; her son Stuart Ross and wife Connie Ann; and her granddaughter Kali Nicole, all of Calgary. As per Vals wishes no funeral services will be held. The family will be having a day of memory for her in the future. To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

Flowers, Brenda Doreen (nee smith)

Lifetime experience
Strathmore ice Devils played hard and had lots of fun in the 29th Annual Red Deer Friends on ice tournament. The U10 Novice team was lucky enough to win a raffle in which they where able to showcase their stuff during first intermission at the Red Deer Rebels Jan. 5 game against the moose Jaw Warriors. After the girls played a five minute mini-game, they proudly highfived the WHL players as the Rebels came back to the ice after intermission. The girls were given front row tickets to watch the game and felt like royalty as they cheered Red Deer to a win.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Flowers. Brenda made many friends throughout her life and was loved by all. Brenda worked for 23 years at the Strathmore Co-op, was involved with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and was a volunteer and President of the Wheatland County Food Bank. Brenda was always a hard worker with a quirky sense of humour. The most important thing in her life was always her family. Brenda had a special gift and passion for taking care of people, especially the young and elderly. She will be sadly missed by many. Heaven truly has another angel. Brenda is survived by her loving husband John of 33 years, son Craig, and daughter Amber. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters Doug (Sandy), Barb (Larry), Edwin and Evelyn, in addition to many brothers and sisters in law, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Doreen Smith, sister Carol, brothers Harvey and Marvin, and nephew Steven. Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 17, 2013 at the Strathmore United Church at 2:00pm. Interment Strathmore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made in Brendas name directly to the Canadian Liver Foundation (309, 1010 1 ave. NE, Calgary, T2E 7W7). To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
