Oral Presentation 90 minutes

3) Title
Does a Conventional Pharmaceutical Approach to Digestive Disorders Cause Hypertension as
Opposed to a Naturopathic Approach?

4) Short Description
Dr. Decker Weiss, Naturopathic Cardiologist will explore nutrient depletion, side effects, and
physiology of pharmaceutical digestive approaches to digestion and make a case for them causing
hypertension. Dr. Weiss will contrast this with Naturopathic approaches for digestive disorders
and make the case that not only do they help prevent the onset of hypertension, but can treat
hypertension as well.

5) Abstract

a) Clearly stated learning objectives

1. The attendee shall be presented with the common classes of pharmaceutical medications,
their side effects, nutrient depletion, and physiology.
2. The attendee shall be presented with a Naturopathic approach to a matching set of
digestive disorders.
3. The attendee shall be presented with a contrast and comparison of the pharmaceutical
versus the Naturopathic approach to digestive disorders.
4. The attendee shall be presented with the physiology of hypertension and it’s relationship
to nutrient depletion, side effects, and the Naturopathic concepts of liver and kidney
toxicity.
5. The attendee shall be encourage to form an opinion as to the validity of the theory that
the conventional approach to digestive disorders can cause hypertension.

6) Biographical Sketch

Dr. Weiss is the first naturopathic physician to complete a residency program in the Columbia
Hospital System, the Arizona Heart Hospital and the prestigious Arizona Heart Institute. He is
also the first naturopathic physician to be on staff at a conventional hospital, the Arizona Heart
Hospital, where he served for ten years. Dr. Weiss travels around the world training physicians
and pharmacists on safer ways to use fewer prescriptions and provide more vitality to their
patients with natural medicines.

Dr. Weiss holds several appointments, including Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Southwest
College of Naturopathic Medicine and maintains his own private practice in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He also holds positions on several scientific and research advisory boards and was the first
naturopathic physician to be chosen as a Fellow of the American Society of Angiology.
