LIVING HISTORY- Are your kids interested in history? Do they like to learn about people and events of the past? Do they like to pretend to be those people or live in that time period? Then the multi-county 4-H Living History program might be for your kids. This is an excellent program for home school youth or public schooled children, who are ages seven and older, to explore their heritage, community, and expand their knowledge of local history. The program is a four part series where youth will 1) explore living history, 2) choose a person or time period they are interested in, 3) research and learn about that person or era, and 4) participate in a Living History Fair where youth will share what they have learned with others. Cornell Cooperative Extensions 4-H Youth Development program will be facilitating this 4 part series, at 6:30pm at the Hudson Falls Public Library (tentative). The second session will be held Tuesday, January 22, 6:30pm at the Hudson Falls Public Library. The Third & Fourth Session will be determined at a later date. Please contact John Bowe, 4H Team Leader for more information 518-623-3291 or 668-4881.

NEWS FROM RENSSELAER- Fuel up to Play 60 is a program that teaches youth the importance of physical activity and eating nutrient-rich foods. The goal of the program is to get students to be healthier by becoming active and eating food that is good for them. Obesity in children is becoming a problem and this program works to prevent and solve this dilemma. The National Dairy Council (NDC) and the NFL came together to develop Fuel up to Play Sixty, it focuses on schools, where students spend most of their time, by changing meals to be nutritious and making sure that kids are getting the enough physical activity. About 36 million students and 70,000 schools are enrolled in the program. This program has been improving the lives of students across the US. As a dairy princess I was educated on the program and was able to host an event at a local school. At Brittonkill Central School Districts, Tamarac Elementary School around 80 students from the second grade took part. The event including three physical activity stations, these stations taught the kids about different activities that they could do to stay fit along with teamwork, farming and the importance of dairy in their diet. The students also attended a nutrition workshop where they learned about the power behind the play and how low-fat and free-fat milk along with physical activity has many healthy benefits. The students got to try low-fat dairy products: cheese, yogurt, chocolate milk, and white milk. The students enjoyed the event and learned about the importance of wholesome foods and physical activity which lead to a healthy lifestyle. A special thank you to the students and teachers at Tamarac for their help and participation in the event. A big thank you to Olivia Logue, Lindsay McMahon, Abbie Tarbox, Casey Greene, Jaidy Hernandez, and Alexa Herrington, the members of my court who helped run the event. As well as a huge shout out to The Rensselaer County Dairy Princess Program and Midland Farms for donating dairy products. Keep your eye out for the logo on the field of NFL football games and go to www.fueluptoplay60.com for more information and to get involved. 10 CATCHPHRASES WE DONT WANT TO HEAR AGAIN IN 2013 Hollywood.com reported on the 10 catchphrases we dont want to hear again in 2013, including Guy Fieris Flavortown, USA!, May the odds be ever in your favor! from the Hunger Games, Game of Thrones Winter is coming!, and YOLO! People use these when theyre nervous or have lost their train of thought, HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education stated. Listening for ahs, ums, sos, you knows, and other crutch words makes the speakers aware of how often they use them as well as teaching the Ah Counter to hear their own in everyday speech. If youd like to get rid of your personal speaking hangups, we invite you to see what Toastmasters has to offer by visiting Washington County Toastmasters. Our January 2nd meeting will be held in a different location, in the lunch room at the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY.
