Lesson Plan 8 The Executive Department II: Presenting Research/Opinion V.

Factual Statements Seventh Grade Civics Goal: Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding the governmental system of the United States. Objectives: Working individually, students will be able to exemplify their knowledge of the various Executive Departments through presenting their research and differentiate between opinion and factual statement by classifying oral and written statements Required Materials: Computer/Speakers/Worksheets/Presidential Rap. Detailed Lesson: Warm up Activity: Students will be asked to answer the following prompts in their notebooks, elaborating on their Executive Department research exercise they completed in the computer lab last class: Chose three Executive Departments and write who the Departments secretary is and the Departments responsibilities. Students will be given five minutes to gather and write their thoughts. After five minutes, discussion of students sharing which departments they chose to write about will be held. In total, the writing plus discussion should take no more than ten minutes to complete. Activity for the Day: Students will be working on worksheets that call for the appliance of their knowledge of the Executive Departments. Students will be able to complete the worksheets individually. After the first worksheet on the Executive Branch has been completed by students, the song, The Presidents Cabinet by Rhythm Rhyme Results will be played for students. Upon the completion of the song, students will be played the first forty seconds of the song again, and the lyrics The Department of State, the most important one there, will be discussed, and student will be asked what kind of statement it is, and a discussion and exercises about facts and opinion statements will ensue to have students decipher opinion statements from factual statements that utilize Social Studies context. An outline of this discussion will follow this lesson plan. Students will be instructed to create a T-chart in their notebook to make notes on the difference between facts and opinions. The lecture for this portion of the class is located on the fifth page of this document. Students will then be asked to create three statements utilizing the information from their research project and give it to a neighbor to decipher if the statements are opinionated or factual in nature. Wrap up Activity: Students will be asked to correct the worksheets made for their peers to complete. If a student mislabeled another students statement, the student who authored the worksheet is to explain why the statement is either a fact or an opinion to the peer who was given their worksheet.

Fact V. Opinions Notes -The lyric The Department of State, the most important one there, will be replayed for students. -Students will then be asked what they can tell me about the statement. They will be asked if they agree or disagree. -Students will then be told this statement is an opinion statement and then provided with the definition of opinion and fact an examples of each: -Opinion: A statement based on a personal belief that cannot be proven. -Fact: A statement that can be proven with information. -The Executive Department is the most important branch in the United States Government. Opinion -The United States Government has a system of Checks and Balances to assure no area of government becomes too powerful. Fact -The Vice President is the President of the Senate. Fact. -The President should have more power than a Supreme Court Justice. Opinion -Students will be cautioned that statements with the following key words indicate a statement is an opinion: Should, could, want, best, worst, favorite, and seem.
