Forensic science is defined as the application of science to the law. Forensic scientists are usually involved in the search for and examinations of physical traces that might be useful in identifying the scene of crime or victim. Their findings and conclusions are used as evidence in courts of law to solve the crime cases. Forensic science draws on and brings together many scientific disciplines. DNA testing, microscopy and spectroscopic analyses are used to conduct chemical tests to identify hair, blood, dirt and cloth fibres. A forensic scientist may perform many tasks. They can identify illicit drugs, analyse drugs and poison in human tissue and blood fluids, examine items of human and animal biological materials to be compared with victims and suspects using DNA profilling. A forensic scientist can also examine drug plants such as cannabis. To identify whether a document is fake or not, special techniques are used. A case of a house break-in can be solved using forensic science. For example, if the intruder break in without using gloves, traces will be everywhere. In this situation, a forensic scientist will take samples of finger prints whether at the window, door and so on using powder and a special duster. These finger prints will be sent to the laboratory for analysis. Forensic science also includes identifying firearms and ammunition, examining fire and explosion scenes to establish the origin and cause of explosion, produce reports as well as appear in court and present a scientific opinion on the accident accurately to commit the suspect as guilty and to provide advice to police investigators, scientists and pathologists across a broad range of disciplines. This art has been practised in all parts of the world. Pottery began as ancient people struggled to find ways to cook, store and carry water, but went on to a form of art as people began creating vases and dishes for decorative uses. There are three major types of pottery which are earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Each of them have their own characteristics on clay mixture and temperature when baking and firing. Earthenware is a pottery clay mixture that is fired at a lower temperature which allows the use of colourful glazes but it can crack and chip off more easily than any other type. Stoneware pottery is made of a heavier clay mixture that gives it greater strength because it has been fired at a higher temperature. Porcelain is made from koalin, a fine white clay that is mixed with controlled amounts of feldspar and then fired at a low temperature. It is the purest and the most delicate type of pottery. Pottery making is classified into two categories i.e easy and hard. The easy pottery is when the object is shaped with wet clay first and then hardened by baking. It includes both decorative and practical items such as bowls, vases, dishes and lamps. For the harder types, it is made of baked clay. It includes valuable works of art, inexpensive dinnerware, vases and other simple household items which are made by professional potters. Pottery making involves four steps. Dear Jamil, I was shocked to discover that a good friend of mine is down with dengue fever. So, I decided to pay him a visit in the hospital. Armed with a packet of grapes, I made my way to the ward. I was shocked as I saw some of the residents from my neighbourhood in the same ward. Obviously, they too were down with dengue fever. I spoke to my father who is the chairman of the Happy Gardens Residents Association about the dengue menace. He called the residents for a meeting that night. The residents agreed to have a cleanliness campaign to rid the residential area of the Aedes mosquito which is the carrier of the dengue fever. That Saturday morning, the residents worked together to clear the area of receptacles that can store water. This is because the mosquitoes lay eggs in clean and stagnant water. Some of the residents cleared the weeds and dried leaves that clogged the drain. Some men cut the grass and cleared broken pots as they are excellent breeding grounds. That night, a health inspector gave a talk on how to avoid the dengue fever. He reminded us that the mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk. So, he reminded us to close our windows and doors at these times. He also asked us to spray insecticide at this time to kill the existing mosquitoes in the house. We were also reminded to lit mosquito coils to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Another good suggestion will be to sleep under a mosquito net. Well, I hope that you will adhere to these tips to keep the menacing dengue fever at bay. Lillian

These teenagers not only put their lives at stake but the lives of innocent road users who ply this road on their way home. They are so bold that they harass and torment other road users. Just yesterday, a lady driver with a child on board had a scare of her life when a group of teenage motorcyclists surrounded her car. They hurled stones at the car, breaking the rear mirror. They grabbed her handbag and took out her cash and cell phone. They even threatened to harm the child if she did not give her jewellery. They reminded her not to lodge a police report if she treasured her childs life. 3. I urge you to investigate this matter urgently as the lives of the residents of this residential area are at stake. Wow, thats interesting! What have you found out? The Olympic Games marked its beginning in April 1896 in Athens. There were 311 athletes who participated in this game. Do you know that the torch was first introduced by the Olympic Congress in 1925? I definitely did not know that. I am curious to know how the torch is lit. Oh, okay. The torch was first lit in 1936 in Olympia. Believe me, it was indeed a unique way of doing it! A concave mirror was placed on a wood and it was kept under the sunlight until it caught fire. Amazing, isnt it? Simply amazing! Well, thats not all! The torch was then carried to Berlin by relay runners. Berlin was then the host of the Olympic Games. That was truly informative, Serena. It was a tradition that every Saturday, the farmer would go for his lunch at a nearby inn. The dog would join the master for lunch at the inn. John would eat a simple lunch while the dog would be given a bone. A few years later the farmer died. The owner of the inn was puzzled to see Timmy at the inn. It looked pleadingly at the owner. Feeling pity, he gave the poor dog a bone. The dog took the bone and ran away. This routine followed for the next few days. One day, the curious owner decided to follow the dog. He was amazed to see the faithful dog making a beeline towards the graveyard. It placed the bone near John Grays grave and sat lovingly beside it. The inn owner was touched by the dogs faithfulness towards its master. As winter was fast approaching, the inn owner decided to make a shelter for the dog near its masters grave. Questions 29 34 Read the passage below carefully. Then, answer the questions that follow.
Is the tomato a fruit or vegetable? Of course, it doesnt really matter very much which it is, since we use it in this country as a vegetable. A fascinating thing about this question is that the Supreme Court of the United States actually had to decide what tomato is! Botanically, tomato is a fruit. There can be no question about that. But it is used in soups, sauces and ketchup, and in many other ways in the main part of the meal. So, for purposes of trade, the Supreme Court in 1893 classified the tomato as a vegetable! The tomato originated in its wild form in South America in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. Long before Columbus went to the new world, cultivated forms of the tomato had already been developed in Mexico. And it is probable that tomatoes from Mexico were the first ones ever seen by people in Europe. The first definite description of the tomato in Europe was in Italy in 1554, where it was called pomidoro, or apple of gold. This means that a yellow type of tomato was the first known in Europe. Before the end of the sixteenth century, tomatoes were being grown in the gardens of England, Spain, Italy, France and the countries of mid-Europe. But they were considered a sort of curiosity. By the mid-1700s people in several countries of Europe were using the tomato as food and the first person to grow it in the United States was Thomas Jefferson, in 1781. But many people considered the tomato to be poisonous. It wasnt until about 1900 that it became popular for eating. The tomato plant is a relative of the potato and tobacco plants. It needs a long growing season and light, rich, well-drained soil. In northern Europe and the northern United States it is often grown in hot-houses during the winter. Winter tomatoes are picked while green and shipped to northern markets. They ripen on the way to market.

He should not have brought our enemies here to attack and to kill many of our friends. You can mourn him if you like, but we will not carve a pole for him. Brother, I think they are right, Lutong said gently. Poor Umat was our brother, but he does not deserve a memorial pole. Let us just mourn him in our hearts. Galau thought about this, hiding his face with his hands. All right, he said at last, cover the poor man with earth and let no more be said. But one memorial I will give him. This was once a happy village. Now it is a place of death. Blood was spilt in the village street. The smell of death is in the air. Black flies are everywhere. Dear Doctor, I have been diagnosed as having a severe backache. Can you please give me some tips on how to cope with the backache? Laura Dear Laura, I am very sorry that you are plagued with this problem. The good news is that you can relieve the pain. Sleep on a firm mattress as this will keep your back straight. It is also advisable to sleep on your side instead of your back. However, if you are so used to sleeping on your back, you should use a contour pillow to ensure the spine is straight and reduce the strain on you back. It is also advisable not to carry bags on your shoulders as this will aggravate the situation. However, if you do have to carry a bag, I would recommend a backpack as it has two straps that can be strapped to both shoulders. In this way, the weight of the back is evenly spread as unequal stress will lead to severe backache. Finally, try to avoid lifting heavy objects. However, if it is unavoidable, you should bend your knees when lifting as this will strain your leg muscles rather than your back muscles. This is okay as your leg muscles are stronger than your back muscles. If you adhere to these advices, you may be able to relieve your sore back.

Write a summary on how to relieve a backache by three simple methods. The next day, he left for sea at dawn. Although it was still raining, Pak Mat was determined to go to sea. Armed with the nasi lemak his wife had packed for him, he started his boat and left the shore. Meanwhile, his worried wife went home. She was anxious about her husbands safety. She walked to the window and watched as the heavy rain pounded the window panes. She could hear the wind howling and she could imagine the waves crashing angrily against her husbands humble boat. Tears flow down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them with the back of her hand and decided to be optimistic. However, in some deep corner of her mind, the fear still remained. The hours dragged slowly as dusk approached. The rain had not relented and it was falling in full strength. At dusk, she took her children and went to the shore. They brought umbrellas and baskets for the catch. Her heart raced as she walked hurriedly to the shore. She peered through the heavy shower to catch sight of her husbands boat. However, she was in for a disappointment. She paced the ground as time ticked away. She looked at the horizon and saw a dark object bobbing up and down. Her spirit lifted as she saw her husbands boat reaching the shore. She fell to the ground and thanked God for his safety. The thought of being rescued kept him going for twenty-eight years before he was finally rescued. Robinsons perseverance saw him through 28 years of being marooned on a deserted island. Instead of whining and giving up on life, he persevered and made life as comfortable as he could. The Phantom of the Opera The novel that I choose is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. A lesson I have learnt from this novel is that we should never judge a person by his appearance. Erik who is the antagonist in this novel is actually a victim of circumstances. He is not really cruel but he was instead a victim of cruelty. As he was born deformed, he looked ugly. So, people stayed away from him including his biological mother. Hence, he grew up being deprived of love and being rejected by the community. He resented this and thus portrayed this resentment by being cruel. Also, he is very talented. He is such a good singer and tutor. He was able to teach Christine to sing so beautifully that she became a famous opera singer. Finally, he was a very sensitive person. Although he wanted to marry Christine and kill her lover, Raoul, Erik changed his mind when Christine kissed his deformed lips. He was touched by her kind gesture and let the lovers go unharmed. Eriks character reminds us not to look at physical beauty alone because beauty is actually skin deep. We should look at a persons sincerity rather than the physical beauty. Paper 2 Section A The pie-chart shows reasons why the parents of Form 3 Maju send their children for tuition. The survey was conducted among 38 students of this class. Most parents, that is 45% of them, send their children for tuition as they want them to excel in their education. As we all know, our education system is exam-oriented. Thus, to keep up with the paper chase, parents pressure their children to obtain strings of As. Thus, it is not surprising to find students who obtain 21 As. As expected, this trend thrust the benchmark in education even higher. Therefore, to ensure their children are not left behind, parents are willing to part with a hefty sum of money to ensure their children achieve outstanding results. So, parents shove their children for tuition to ensure they succeed in education. The second most important reason why parents send their children for tuition is to avoid undesirable activities such as loitering, vandalism and gangsterism. As we know, juvenile delinquency is on the rise as more and more juveniles are engaged in social ills. Therefore, to ensure their children are not involved with bad hats, 30% of the parents pack them up to tuition centres. Indeed, this move kills two birds with one stone. They are away from social ills and are using their time effectively to pursue a better future. Finally, 25% of the parents are too busy with their careers to spare time for their childrens education. So, they send their children for tuition to ensure they receive the necessary attention in education. Obviously, this is a win-win situation for the parents as they do not have to give up their careers and at the same time ensure their childrens studies are not neglected. The results of the survey show that parents view tuition as essential as 45% of them cite excellence in education as the main reason for sending their children for tuition. The fear of their children getting involved in undesirable activities has led 30% of the families to pack them off for tuition. 25% of the parents realize they have no time to spend on their childrens education, so they compensate by sending them for tuition.

Section B There are a few things to look out for when choosing a fish. Firstly, a fresh fish has its eyes intact with a shiny cornea and visible eyeballs. Also, the gill should be firm and when lifted, it reveals a slimy and well formed gill. A fresh fish is firm and has firm fins, tails and scales. (58 words) Section C Potato People The novel that I choose is Potato People written by Angela Wright. The minor character I like is Peter OConnor. Peter is a kind person. He was very friendly towards Patrick Flynne although they have just met. In fact, he even shared his bread with Patrick whom he had just met. Besides, he is very sympathetic. When he saw little Mary who had lost her entire family, he decided to adopt her to give her a better life. Finally, he is caring. When he was on his way to Cork to board the ship to America, Mary fell ill. He decided to turn back to go to the nearest town to get medical help for Mary. This shows that he is caring and compassionate. I like Peter OConnor as he is kind, sympathetic, daring and compassionate. Robinson Crusoe The novel that I choose is Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe. The minor character I like is Friday. Friday is very loyal to Crusoe who had saved him from the hands of cannibals. As he was grateful, he remained Crusoes true companion. He even went to London with Crusoe. Also, he is intelligent and a quick-learner. He is Crusoes aide and helped him whenever in need. Finally, he is out-spoken. His curiosity gets the better of him and he is frank with his opinions. I like Friday because he is loyal, intelligent and out-spoken. The Phantom of the Opera The novel that I choose is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. The minor character I like is Madame Giry. She is the doorkeeper of Box 5. She is a very superstitious person. She believes that there is a demanding ghost in Box 5 and if the demands are not met, mishaps will arise. Also, she is very observant. She knows whats going on in the Opera House. Finally, she is loyal to Erik. She treats him kindly and reserves Box 5 for him. I like Madame Giry as she is superstitious, observant and loyal. If you sleep on your back, use a contour pillow to keep the back straight. Secondly, use a backpack to spread the weight of

the bag. Finally, lift heavy objects with bent knees to avoid the stress on the back. (60 words) Section C Potato People The novel that I choose is Potato People written by Angela Wright. What I like most about the story is that it reveals the determination of the victims of the Potato Blight for a better life. Although the Irish were suffering and starving as a result of the Potato Blight, their dreams for a better future is very much alive. Peter who survived on leaves, roots and the rotten meat of a dead dog kept the desire of moving to America for a better life. Also, Sean who deeply loves Patrick is determined to make a way for Patrick to go to America. He even kills and robs Mr Graystone to ensure Patricks desire for a better life is fulfilled. Finally, the desire of a better life is attained by Patrick and Marie who had to work in bad conditions with low wages in America. Their sheer determination realized their dreams. I like this novel as it portrays the sheer determination of the Irish men and women who thrived for a better life despite the Potato Blight. Robinson Crusoe The novel that I choose is Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe. What I like most about this novel is the determination to survive despite all odds. Robinson was determined to survive although he was stranded alone on a deserted island. The fact he was alone made him self-reliant. Armed with the natural resources around him, he made a comfortable life for himself. Secondly, he was determined that he would be rescued. He never gave up hope or lost courage. The thought of being alive kept him going for twenty-eight years before he was finally rescued. Finally, Robinsons determination can be seen when he was determined to save Friday from the cannibals. He fought them single-handedly due to sheer determination. Robinson is a determined character as he is able to keep himself alive and comfortable in a deserted island. The Phantom of the Opera The novel that I choose is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. What I like most about this novel is that it reminds me that people are cruel because they are victims of cruelty themselves. Erik who is the antagonist in this novel is actually a victim of cruelty. He is not really cruel but he was instead a victim of cruelty. As he was born deformed, he looked ugly. So, people stayed away from him including his biological mother. Hence, he grew up being deprived of love and being rejected by the community. He resented this and thus portrayed this resentment by being cruel.

However, an act of kindness can melt the cruelty away. Although he wanted to marry Christine and kill her lover, Raoul, Erik changed his mind when Christine kissed his deformed face. He was touched by her kind gesture and let the lovers go unharmed. This proves that humans hunger for love. Thus, by loving one sincerely, one can keep hate and cruelty at bay. This novel spreads the message of love. Section A Disadvantages of Keeping Pets The child kept howling as his mother hugged him tightly. The child watched with tears flooding his cheek as his father buried the dog in the garden. The little boy could not accept the fact that his favourite dog, Shaggy, is dead. He refused to eat or play and kept crying. This is a typical scene when a child loses a pet. It is not easy to come to terms with a dead pet. Much has been said about the advantages of keeping pets. This is because children learn the values of being responsible and practical. However, losing a pet can leave psychological wounds that may never heal. This is due to the fact that the emotional bond with the animal is so strong that there is a vacuum in the childs life. The child is disturbed and may take a long time to overcome the loss. Some children even go through depression when they lose their pets and it is an uphill task to detach themselves from the dead pet. Thus, keeping a pet may lead a child into depression at a young age. Besides, it is unsafe to keep pets as they may be carriers of disease. As we are all aware of, the avian flu or

commonly known as the bird flu is transmitted by birds. This is bad news for bird lovers as the deadly flu can be transmitted to them by their own pets! This is indeed scary! Younger children who have a lower immunity system than adults are susceptible to this disease and the healing process is long. Therefore, it makes sense not to keep pets for this purpose. Finally, keeping a pet may prove to be expensive. Keeping a pedigree pet costs a fortune. Buying a pup or kitten costs a few thousands of ringgit. The bill starts amounting as these pets need special diets and grooming. It is undeniably true that pedigree pets need essential nutrients and vaccinations to keep them in tip-top condition. Thus, the owner has to keep aside a sizable amount of money for the upkeep of the pet. This seems such a waste of good money as the cost of living is soaring. Hence, it seems practical not to keep pets and instead use the money to provide a comfortable life for the family. I personally think keeping a pet is a mere waste of time and precious money. The time and money can be used to spend quality time and bond with family members. Section B The problem started when the lady who had more than ten items queued at the Express Lane. The gentleman behind her told her to go to the next counter but she didnt. So, they argued and this attracted the security guards attention. The problem was solved when the security guard ordered the lady to the next counter. (57 words) Section C Potato People The novel that I choose is Potato People written by Angela Wright. The character who is courageous is Sean. Firstly, Sean was courageous as he had the courage to defend his village, Skullgoragh. When the British soldiers led by Mr Graystone came to attack his village, he organized an army of hunger-stricken villagers. Armed with rusty axes, he stood in the path of the British soldiers. He was courageous to face the well-fed and well-armed British soldiers. Secondly, he was courageous enough to avenge Mr Graystone in his own house. Not being afraid of Mr Graystone, the two fierce dogs or Mr Graystones henchmen, Sean went to Mr Graystons house and killed him single- handedly. He took Mr Graystones money to pay the ship fare for Patrick and Marie. Finally, Sean was courageous to face the consequences of murdering and robbing Mr Graystone. He was ready to be hung without any confrontation. Indeed, Sean is courageous as he is willing to face the obstacles that come along his way and face the consequences of his action.

Robinson Crusoe The novel that I choose is Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe. The character who is courageous is Robinson Crusoe. Firstly, he is courageous enough to leave the comfort zone of his family to pursue his dream of being a sailor. He was courageous to face the challenges in order to attain his ambition. When his parents did not support him, he left the family and all the riches behind. He even stowed away in a ship to realize his dreams. Secondly, he was not deterred with the fact that he was marooned on the island alone. In fact, he was courageous to face the challenges as he made a comfortable life for himself on the island. Unlike an ordinary man who might have committed suicide in these circumstances, he mastered his courage and lived for twenty-eight years on the island. Finally, Robinson was courageous to face the savage cannibals to rescue Friday. He fought them single-handedly and found a true friend in Friday. I think Robinson is truly courageous as he is willing to face challenges and take the bull by its horns The Phantom of the Opera. The novel that I choose is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. The character who is courageous is La Carlotta. She was not easily deterred by death threats. She received a letter threatening her not to sing that night or she would be killed. She was adamant to sing. Even Monsieur Firmin heard a threat saying that if La Carlotta sang that night, the chandelier will fall on her. Again she was not discouraged. She insisted on singing. Despite the death threats, La Carlotta performed under duress. She was courageous enough to sing and face the consequences. As expected, there was a mishap at the Opera House. The chandelier fell onto the audience. As a result, a woman was killed and many others were killed. I think La Carlotta is courageous as she threw caution to the wind and sang despite receiving death threats if she was to sing. Final Year Examination Set 2 Paper 1 Section A 1 C 2 6 B 7

Storm Creates Havoc TAMPIN, Fri A freak storm created havoc in Tampin town yesterday evening. At 6 pm yesterday, the town was enveloped in dark clouds before heavy rains and strong winds lashed through the town. The huge volume of rain resulted in flash floods leaving the puzzled businessmen and customers stranded. Water rose quickly and most of the business operators had to close their business as they swiftly moved their merchandise to higher ground. The stranded customers sought refuge in restaurants as they awaited the storm to subside. The strong winds uprooted trees in several areas causing the trees to fall across roads. Consequently, many roads had to be closed to the public. This resulted in a massive traffic jam. Meanwhile, the roads that were opened to public came to a crawl when motorists had to move bumper-to-bumper. The storm subsided at midnight. However, the destruction was massive and losses were estimated at RM100, 000. The Town Municipal Council workers were seen working around the clock to clear the mess created by the storm. Section B To make a terrarium, fill one-quarter of a jar with soil using a funnel. Then, arrange the plants from the biggest to the smallest. Trim its leaves and roots. Clean the jar first before watering the plants. When the leaves are dried, close the jar. Keep spraying water regularly and place the jar under direct sunlight to ensure healthy growth. (60 words) Section C Potato People The novel that I choose is Potato People written by Angela Wright. The theme of honour was portrayed by Sean, the villagers of Skullgoragh and Patrick. Sean promised Patrick that he would get Patrick the tickets to go to America. To honour his promise, he went to the extent of murdering and robbing Mr Graystone. With that money, he bought the tickets to America for
62

Patrick and Marie. Secondly, the villagers of Skullgoragh honoured their village. When the British soldiers wanted to burn the village, the skinny and hungry men led by Sean protested against Mr Graystones order by their willingness to fight the British soldiers. The villagers armed with their rusty axes tried to stop the well-fed and well-armed British soldiers. They did this to honour their village. Finally, Patrick is also honourable as he never turns a hungry and poor person from his house. Although Patrick became a rich ranch owner, he never forgot his humble beginnings and the pain of starvation. Thus, he ensures that every hungry and poor person is well-fed in his house. This shows that as human beings we must honour our words and honour things that matter to us. Robinson Crusoe The novel that I choose is Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe. The theme of honour is well-portrayed by Robinson and Friday. Although Robinson was rescued and he returned to civilization, his heart remained at the island he was stranded. In fact, he was an honourable person, as he tried to make the life of the islanders as comfortable as possible. He sent Brazilian cows, sheep and goats to the island as they were of superior breed. Indeed, this is an honourable gesture by Robinson. Friday also portrayed honour through his actions. He was loyal to Robinson who rescued him from the hands of savage cannibals. As a gesture of appreciation, Friday kissed the ground and placed Robinsons foot on his head. He was a very faithful servant and they became best of friends. This shows that honour prevails at all levels. The Phantom of the Opera The novel that I choose is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. The theme of honour is portrayed through the characters of the Persian, Raoul and Christine. The Persian portrayed an honourable act as he tried to reunite two lovers, Raoul and Christine. When Erik kidnapped Christine, the Persian led Raoul to Eriks hideout via a secret door and passageway. Raoul is also honourable as he honoured the woman he loved. He was willing to die to save Christine from the evil clutches of Erik. He did not falter in his aim to rescue Christine knowing very well that he may not survive. He did not want Christine to be alone with Erik. Christine, too, was very honourable as she honoured the promise she made to Erik. She promised to kiss Erik on his deformed lips if he would let Raoul go. To further stress that she was genuine, she actually kissed Erik on his deformed lips. This honourable act melted Eriks cruelty away. As a result, he let the lovers go.

the children. As the saying goes, the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world. Finally, a mother with her maternal instincts will be able to understand her childrens problems. With an understanding mother, the children can confide their problems in her or even cry over her warm and broad shoulders. Sadly, today the mothers are missing from homes as they abandon their aprons and don business suits. Whom should the children turn to in their times of despair and distress? Eventually, they turn to their peers who lead them astray. Therefore, there is a gap between mothers and children. The gaps widen and slowly the children sink into a dark hole of no return. Therefore, the onus is on the mothers to shape their childrens future. After all, filial bond is of utmost importance especially in this material era. Thus, I strongly believe that women should not work. Section B Mobile phones are popular with people as they enable the users to be in touch with their loved ones at all times. It is also cheaper than using the regular phones as a text message costs only 10 cents. Finally it is small in size and so the user can manipulate it with a single hand. (56 words) Section C Potato People The novel that I choose to write on is Potato People written by Angela Wright. This novel does portray the theme of loyalty in some characters. One negative form of loyalty is Mr Graystone. He practices extreme cruelty and ill-treats the villagers to get them out of their homes. Mr Graystone works for Lord Egham who lives in London. Being a rich, Lord Egham is only concerned of making profits. Thus, when the Potato Blight hit Ireland, famine crept in and the villagers were unable to pay their taxes to Lord Egham. So, Lord Egham decided to vacate the villagers and to rear sheep which will fetch him a good profit margin. To execute his evil desire, Lord Egham entrusted this duty to his loyal servant, Mr Graystone. With the help of the British Army and his cruel men, Mr Graystone burnt villages and left the villagers homeless. Mr Graystone was indeed very loyal to Lord Egham in carrying out his duties even though many were killed and left homeless. A positive sign of loyalty is Patrick Flynn who is in Cork awaiting his departure to America. Sean had killed Mr Graystone and used the money stolen from him to buy two tickets for Patrick and Marie to sail to America. While awaiting the ship to sail, Marie and Patrick walked around Cork and were shocked to see Sean caught by the soldiers. Without thinking, the loyal Patrick ran forward to help him. However, the quick-thinking Marie stopped him as Patrick would also receive a similar fate as Sean. Finally, the lovebirds, Marie and Patrick are loyal to

Paper 2 Section A I agree with Manan that women should not work. Instead, they should stay at home and raise their children. It is undoubtedly true that women do contribute positively to the economic growth. However, what are the consequences of working mothers on their children? From time immemorial, men have been the breadwinners and women took care of the family. This family had strong filial bonds and juvenile delinquencies among these children were minimal. However, with the shift of the womens traditional role, more and more women are involved in the working sector. Hence, they leave the upbringing of their children in the hands of aged grandparents or even worse, foreign maids. As the mothers successfully climb the ladder of success, the children are constantly neglected. Hence, these young adults are easily influenced by their peers who indulge in vices such as gangsterism, vandalism, loitering and bullying. Now, if the concerned mothers were at home, they will be able to know their children are beginning to get involved in vices, they can nip the delinquent children in the bud. Hence, it is crucial for mothers to be around especially when the children are growing up. Secondly, the mothers have a role in instilling moral values in their children. In the past, the mothers spend time with their children narrating stories with moral values. These young impressionable children yearn to listen to these stories. Unconsciously, the moral values are embedded in their lives from young. Hence, this positive contribution from the mothers have a lingering effect on

each other. They helped and comforted each other throughout their adventure and to reinforce their loyalty, they got married. Thus, I would strongly say that the theme of loyalty abounds in The Potato People. Robinson Crusoe The novel that I choose to write on is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. This novel does portray the theme of loyalty in some characters. Loyalty for one another is what keeps the characters going especially in times of difficulty. One such example is the loyalty that Crusoe and Friday have for each other. Fridays loyalty towards Crusoe began when Crusoe rescued him from the cannibals. Indebted with gratitude, Friday remained loyal to Crusoe. This can be seen through his relationship with Crusoe. He obeys and dutifully serves Crusoe. In return, Crusoe protects him and teaches him how to become civilized. Loyalty is also seen in the relationship between the sea captain and Crusoe. Crusoe saved the Captain who was imprisoned by his sailors. He helped the Captain to regain his ship. As a token of gratitude, the Captain promised to take Crusoe back to England. Loyalty is again seen in the captain. He is loyal to Crusoe and to the promise he made to Crusoe. He took both Crusoe and Friday back with him to England. Indeed the captain kept his promise. In short, loyalty does prevail in this novel and is shown by Crusoe, Friday and the Captain.

The Phantom of the Opera The novel that I choose to write on is The Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. This novel does portray the theme of loyalty in some characters. Loyalty in this novel is portrayed by Christine. Firstly, Christine is very grateful to Erik who taught her how to sing well. He helps her to achieve her dream of becoming the best opera singer in Paris. She bears up with his cruelty as she feels that she owes her good fortune to him. Hence, she is loyal to him even when he treats her so cruelly. Once again Christine shows her loyalty to her love, Raoul. She is so loyal to Raoul that she sacrifices her love for him for the sake of Erik. This is because Erik is also madly in love with Christine. He could not bear to part with her. Thus, when he realizes that she loves Raoul, Erik decides to kill Raoul in the torture chamber. Her love and loyalty to Raoul sees sacrifices and loyalty. She even agrees to marry Erik if Raoul is spared. Erik was touched and overwhelmed by Christines sacrifice. She touched him and he was willing to spare Raouls life and let them be together. So, loyalty prevailed in this novel through Christine. She is loyal to both her men and in the end her willingness to sacrifice won Eriks cruel heart. In the end, she is reunited with the love of her life, Raoul.
