Presidents Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues, As 2012 comes to a close and the New Year is almost here, we ask ourselves - "What does the new year hold for the architecture, engineering and construction industry?" I offer four projections for 2013: 1. The rebuilding of America's infrastructure will gain momentum and design firms will turn to visualization and collaborative design process to find innovative approaches. To encourage this transition, the federal government recently passed a Transportation Bill referred to as Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, or MAP-21. The bill contains specific language that requires states and MPOs to use visualization in planning to share project information with the public. 2. Building Information Modeling will gain even broader adoption at every level. In 2013 government agencies and owners will increase their requirements for BIM-based workflows to benefit from the efficiencies these workflows provide. 3. In 2013 more emphasis will be placed on the "I" in BIM, as BIM continues to move into the field via mobile devices and models take on a life after construction enabling more efficient facility operations and maintenance. 4. The AEC industry will begin to embrace cloud technologies. Autodesk is leading the way with the Autodesk Cloud. Autodesk Cloud is a collection of more than a dozen web-based capabilities, products and services such as Cloud rendering, Energy Analysis and simulation tools that enable AEC professionals to extend their desktops with greater mobility, new viewing and sharing capabilities, and more computing power, helping them better design, visualize and simulate their ideas.

Tim Duncan, AIA President/CEO CADsoft Consulting There is still time! December 31st is the deadline to take advantage of Section 179? Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment and/or software purchased or financed during the tax year. That means that if you buy (or lease) a piece of qualifying equipment, you can deduct the FULL PURCHASE PRICE from your gross income. It's an incentive created by the U.S. government to encourage businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves. Visit http://section179.org to learn more.
