The Great Depression Class Notes October 29th, 1929: Black Tuesday, stock market crashes yet again after revival attempt. 1920s: The Roaring Twenties. Loss of paper profits. Less demand. Lower prices. Less production. Less employment. Less money in circulation. Less bank credit. Less building of factories and homes.

The Downward Spiral:

1930s: The Great Depression.

1930: Hawley-Smoot Act: High tariffs to protect American farmers, however, international trade on decline. The Dust Bowl: Black Blizzards. o o o Dorothea Lange, government-paid photographer. Jobless men keep going we cant take care of our own. 1937: Disappears during her flight across the world. Okies & Arkies: Derogatory term for farmers moving to the west in search of jobs. 1932: Amelia Earhart: 1st woman to fly across the Atlantic solo. Orson Welles: War of the Worlds reenactment on radio. 75% of population still had jobs. Herbert Hoover, president during Great Depression. o o Hoovervilles: Makeshift settlements of the poor. Hoover flags: Empty pockets turned inside out. July 28th, 1932: Hoover sends in the military, led by Eisenhower and McCartney. 2 veterans and 1 infant dead. The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. The New Deal: A new chance. Focused on 3 Rs: Relief, recovery, reform. WPA: Works Progress Adminsitration. TDA: Tennessee Valley Authority. 1933 to 1945: President Franklin Roosevelt elected 4 consecutive times. o o

CCC: Civilian Conservation Corps. For the test, know: AAA, PWA, TVA, FHA, FERA, WPA, FDIC, SSA, CCC, NIRA, REA.

Did NOT end the Great Depression (WWII did).

Fireside chats: Explained programs through radio, did not trust media as a middle-man. 1937: Roosevelt Recession. Strikes gave way for extremism. Rise of a potential dictator, used a private police force. 1935: Long is assassinated. The Kingfish Huey P. Long, the most dangerous man in America.

Eleanor Roosevelt: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. o o Only allowed female reporters to attend her conferences to promote a genderbalanced workforce in news agencies. Chairperson of UNs Commission on Human Rights (after FDR deceased?)

A. Philip Randolph, father of the Civil Rights movement. AA Pilots (Tuskegee airmen): African-American pilots, Eleanor Roosevelt flies with one. During WII: Philadelphia, 10k whites on strike against working with African-Americans. o Go to work on Monday, or be drafted on Tuesday. FDR
