Over the last three years, we eagerly read your feedback complete with hopes for the continued growth of the theatre arts training program here at CTC. In order to better serve you and your family, and in response to your generous comments and suggestions, this year we will offer you the option of registering for fall, winter and/or spring classes now. For the first time, you will have the opportunity to secure a spot in our most popular classes at a time that best suits your schedule. In addition to the assessments you receive at the conclusion of each class, below please find suggested learning pathways to consider. Some decisions are hard to make, so we have created a few sample tracks for your consideration (please note many of our students repeat a class for two or more sessions). Our work now includes building critical and abstract thought processes in relation to performance, supporting growth in self-reliance and confidence and helping to envision a more objective world view. Its time to focus on building individual skills: Classical Theatre intensive works with text analysis, exploring tools that enable students to discover a deeper understanding of language while examining vocal and physical characterizations. Our lab Collective supports the continued growth of writers, directors and actors without the pressure of performance. This pure process approach opens the doorway to the in-depth study of acting techniques and processes, preparing the serious young actor for his/her next steps. For the musical theatre performer, its time to begin developing your true voice Broadway Voice works with contemporary and classic Broadway songs. Students learn to connect their vocal skills to the dramatic intention critical to the development of musical theatre performers. Then strengthen your dance skills in Broadway Dance ii.

This class will focus on the joy of movement through learning loco motor skills such as skipping and leaping, and exploring other music and movement skills including rhythm, tempo and dynamics. Shared playwriting

Using our understanding of familiar stories, poetry, and songs, students will learn how to write a play together using a shared writing process. Through movement, character creation games, story circles, and imagination exercises, students will gain confidence in expressing their own ideas, sharing the stage with others, and working as a team towards one goal: an original play created and performed by the students. The play will include conventions of rhythm and rhyme, as well as cover the basic process of creating a play from outlining to final draft, but in a simplified, shared and supported format. This class serves as an introduction to the basic elements and terminology of musical theatre dance (with just the right spices of jazz and tap). Working with material that draws from the Broadway musical Annie and other contemporary Broadway musicals, students will develop rhythmic awareness and the ability to use their bodies as instruments. Focus on improving each students fundamental understanding of acting, stage movement, character development and motivation while rehearsing a play specifically created for young performers. Originally a one man hip-hop theatre piece, FLOW brings over 30 characters to life in their quest for survival in a modern world filled with urban pitfalls. As these storytellers search for a new language to make age-old lessons endure for a younger generation, they must live long enough to complete that search. Underscored by an original hip-hop influenced soundscape, performers will embody multiple characters through rap, dance, stylized movement dialogue and monologue as the storyteller in ALL of us is brought to the forefront. Expand your vocal and dramatic skills together in this exploration of what it really takes to be a successful musical theatre singer. Working with classic and contemporary Broadway songs, you will learn to connect your vocal skills to the dramatic intention critical to developing confidence as a performer. performance Workshop: Bluebeard

An ensemble-based creation exploring themes found in BLUEBEARD, a French fairytale about a villainous aristocrat who hides a dark secret in his basement, and the young woman who has to outwit him and avoid the fate of the women who came before her. A story about wealth and poverty, violence, guilt and abuse of power told through original music and highly stylized, grotesque physicality. Come to the dark side for stage combat and rock and roll. Think fast! Or, better yet, don't think! Quick, fun games designed to build confidence, help you make strong character choices, trust your instincts and work well with others. This is fun work, good for both beginning and experienced performers.

Use your body to create a rhythmic circus! Taking inspiration from Stomp and Step Teams, we will create our own dynamic combinations and polyrhythmic choreography. Our emphasis will be on learning routines and creating your own rhythms.

Students will work with favorite (and of course age appropriate) Broadway songs, concentrating on the fundamentals of singing and creating characters. Focus will be on imagination, coordination, body and vocal awareness.

april 30 - Onstage

Students will explore their imagination while inventing new worlds and creating characters through an investigation of sets, costumes, props and lights. Through theatre games and acting exercises, we will focus on freeing the creative spirit of each child while building a dynamic ensemble of actors.

(Primary instructor: Annie Enneking) This collective, comprised of writers, directors and actors, will initially explore imaginative and fundamental approaches to scene study while establishing a foundation and common language as an ensemble. Through relaxation and trust exercises, sensory work, text analysis and the exploration of techniques for making active choices in the moment, each actor will work to discover the techniques that best support their work. Writers will find their voice, guided by an experienced playwright, as students learn to create rich believable characters, giving life to the stories of their imaginations and dreams! Potential projects include a marathon play creation and performance events (such as 24 plays in 24hrs by 24 actors or car plays which take place in our parking garage) as well as master classes with industry professionals. (Prerequisite: Actors Toolbox, Classical Theatre Intensive or similar class) Meets bi-monthly (every other week) for 3 and 1/2 hour sessions Mondays 4:30-8pm

Learn the basics of musical theatre, improvisation and acting fundamentals. This workshop will provide an introduction to blocking and movement to familiar songs and scenes as students explore the characters and music from favorite musicals.

may 14 - play lab

Experience an authentic playwriting process, from grabbing inspiration, themes and characters out of our personal experience all the way to creating a final draft and public reading. By breaking playwriting down into its most essential parts, students will be able to learn and synthesize with the same tools grown-up playwrights use. This class will also include plenty of movement, acting and on your feet activities to help generate ideas, but is ideal for kids who love to write and/or make up their own stories.

(Primary Instructors: CTC Staff and Others) This program is specifically designed to provide students in grades 7-12 with extensive hand-on experience in the backstage elements of the theatre: design and technical production of scenery/props, costumes, lighting and sound. This will be done in a professional theatre setting through practical work with the expert design and technical staff of Childrens Theatre Company. This exploration and introduction to the world of the professional production process and theatre technology will take the form of master classes led by industry professionals. Lab students will be invited to view the production process of a CTC mainstage production, as well as working on their own design and technical elements of the TAT senior fall and junior winter shows in the Cohen Stage. (Tech/Design Prerequisite: prior technical experience) Schedule to be determined by CTC production calendar.

Class Sizes

Class sizes are limited to ensure the best possible learning environment for your student. Please register early to ensure a spot, as registrations are held on a first paid basis. All classes are subject to cancellation prior to class start if minimum enrollment is not met.

reCeiVe 15% OFF of your tuition cost if you are a CTC Season Subscriber, have registered for more than one class (1st class full price, all subsequent classes 15% off), or have more than one student in your family registered for class (1st class at full price, all subsequent classes at 15% off per session).
A $100 discount is also available for one TAT class if your child has performed in one of CTC's professional shows either in the Cargill or on the UnitedHealth Group Stage within 12 months of the closing date of that show.

Supervision / pick Up

TAT supervision ends at the end of each session. Students 9 years and older will wait at CTCs Stage Door entrance to be picked up. Students 2 to 8 years must be picked up from their classroom.

Dance attire
The more clearly the teacher can see the students body joints, the more easily the teacher can give the student technical feedback. Dressing in layers is a good idea, but wearing a lot of bulky clothing makes it difficult to give feedback. It can be a bit cool in the studio at the beginning of class and very warm by the end so please shed extra clothing as we go along.

Hair pulled back and out of face. Jewelry - large and dangling jewelry is distracting and dangerous.
Please remove it before class.

Creative movement:
Children should wear clothing that is easy to move in and that wont inhibit movement. Sweatpants, shorts and t-shirts work very well. Children are encouraged to dance barefoot during creative movement classes.
