Healthy Recap Kaitlin Dykstra is a busy woman. As the Chehalis School Districts nurse she and her assistant, Amber Palmer, attend to the health of students in five schools from kindergarten to 12th grade. Despite a demanding schedule Dykstra spoke at the Chehalis PTAs last meeting with a knowledgeable and kind demeanor. She discussed how to identify whether a child has a cold or true influenza, which is a respiratory ailment, not digestive. Dykstra then gave simple steps to keep viruses and bacteria from making our kiddos sick and led a brief Q&A on pertussis and other health concerns parents who attended had about their school-aged students. She pointed out that whether a person uses hand sanitizer or the more preferred method, soap and warm water, one must rub hands together for at least 15 seconds and, if using sanitizer, to let it dry before calling hands clean. It is the friction caused by rubbing that is doing the big job of disinfecting. She also encouraged parents to teach their children to avoid touching the faces t-zone. Many illnesses could be prevented by treating the forehead, eyes, nose and mouth as off-limit areas to touch throughout the day. Those who attended Decembers PTA meeting left more informed. Thank you so much Kaitlin Dykstra and Amber Palmer for all the work you do each day for our kids!
