This is the FIRST article written and distributed to the membership of Medical Group Management Association (Denver, CO) which described a new concept for billing and filing insurance claims by physician providers – called the SUPERBILL. The objective at the time was to INTRODUCE the first physician provided billing and insurance form in the US (as opposed to other efforts being suggested by the AMA with their standard Insurance Claim Form -- which, at the time, had NOT, for the most part, been adopted by the insurance industry as the STANDARD). |||| John Strehlow and I had invented the Superbill and defined its attributes – as a concept (no form) while Minnesota medical practice administrators. We had attempted to convince insurance carriers in Minnesota to consider the concept for state-wide utilization. However, the standard format suggested by our presentations did provide one important limitation – the form would be difficult to cross state lines. Many large Minnesota medical groups saw patients from several states and even countries (e.g., Mayo in Rochester). What was needed was a national effort. IIII This article explains how and why the concept had moved on to the national scene in order to encourage a US-wide dialog with MGMA membership (5,000+ administrators).
