Phrasal Verbs
So verbos de duas ou trs partes formados basicamente por um verbo mais uma ou duas partculas, que o complementam. isto , podem ser classificados como sendo uma frase. As partculas podem ser preposies ou advrbios e o significado total das palavras geralmente diferente do significado individual dos elementos que o compem. Sendo assim, no podem ser traduzidos literalmente na maioria das vezes e devem ser encarados como vocbulos independentes dos elementos que os compem. Exemplo: sit (verbo) + down (advrbio) = sit down (sentar) get (verbo) + in (preposio) = get in (entrar)
Caractersticas
Observe os exemplos a seguir: Please turn on the light. = Please turn the light on. = Please turn it on. (Por favor, ligue a luz.) She switched on the TV. = She switched the TV on. = She switched it on. (Ela ligou a televiso.) Take off your shoes. = Take your shoes off. = Take them off. (Tire seus sapatos.)
Veja a LISTA DE PHRASAL VERBS SEPARVEIS
3. H casos, no entanto, em que a partcula no pode ser separada do verbo. Veja alguns exemplos abaixo: While she was cleaning the house, she came across a pair of gold earrings. (Enquanto ela estava limpando a casa, encontrou um par de brincos de ouro.) Your daughter doesn't take after you at all. (Sua filha no se parece nada com voc.)
Veja a LISTA DE PHRASAL VERBS INSEPARVEIS
4. Como os outros verbos, os phrasal verbs podem ser transitivos (requerem objeto, pois seu sentido no est completo em si) ou intransitivos (seu sentido est completo em si e portanto, no requerem objeto). Quando transitivos, os phrasal verbs podem ser separados. Observe: He took off his jacket. = He took his jacket off. (Ele tirou o casaco.) (obj. dir.) The plane took off. (O avio decolou.)
Veja a LISTA DE PHRASAL VERBS INTRANSITIVOS
Os Phrasal Verbs transitivos so subdivididos em: - Inseparveis What a terrible journey! We broke down twice on the way home. (Que viagem terrvel! Nosso carro quebrou duas vezes no caminho de volta para casa.) - Separveis Please, turn on the light. = (Por favor, ligue a luz.) Please, turn the light on. Please, turn it on. Please, turn on it. Errado! A Separao obrigatria quando se utiliza o pronome it. 5. Alguns phrasal verbs apresentam partculas que servem apenas para indicar que a ao est completa ou para reforar/enfatizar o sentido do verbo. Este verbo frequentemente formado com a partcula up. Exemplos: cut off - cortar burn up - queimar mix up - misturar Observaes: A) Quando o objeto longo, evita-se separar os phrasal verbs, uma vez que isto dificultaria a compreenso: Yesterday the teacher pointed out problems related to phrasal verbs. / Yesterday the teacherpointed problems related to phrasal verbs out.
Por exemplo: Did you talk about me? (No: Did you talk me about?) 2. Quando um verbo com preposio for usado, o substantivo ou pronome ser colocado depois da preposio, exceto na oraes interrogativas ("What are you looking at?") ou relativas ("This is the man that I was talking to."). Exemplos: Look at those children. = Look at them. 3. O significado do verbo com preposio coincide, em muitos casos, com aquele do verbo de forma isolado. Os verbos to pay e to pay for significam pagar. A preposio serve para introduzir o complemento, no agrega nenhum significado novo ao verbo. Exemplos: Pay for e Pay A: How much did you pay for that shirt? (Quanto voc pagou por esta camisa?) B: I paid 100 reais. (Paguei 100 reais.) Listen to e Listen I like listening to music. (Gosto de ouvir msica.) Martin should apply for that job. He has the necessary qualifications. (Martin deveria concorrer quele emprego. Ele possui as qualificaes necessrias.) Observao: no utilizamos preposies quando no h objeto. Exemplo: Listen! (E no: Listen to!) - gramaticalmente correto incluir um advrbio entre o verbo e a preposio: I'll look carefully after the children.
Prepositional Verb: They called on Tedd. = They called on him. (Eles visitaram o Tedd. / Eles o visitaram.) Logo, os prepositional verbs so considerados verbos INSEPARVEIS.
Phrasal Verbs: I'll put 'ON my trousers. (Vou vestir minhas calas.) Prepositional Verbs: Jack 'LOOKED for his name on the list but he couldn't find it. (Jack procurou pelo nome dele na lista, mas no conseguiu encontr-lo.)
Three word Verbs: verbos com preposies e partculas adverbiais ao mesmo tempo
Alguns verbos podem ser usados tanto com uma partcula adverbial quanto com uma preposio ao mesmo tempo (o que os torna three-part verbs, verbos de trs partes.). Veja alguns exemplos: I get on with her quite well. (Eu me dou muito bem com ela.) Stop talking and get on with your work. (Pare de falar e prossiga com seu trabalho.) It's hard to put up with people who won't stop talking. ( difcil aguentar pessoas que no param de falar.) If you're on the road on Saturday night, look out for drunk drivers. (Se voc for dirigir no sbado noite, tenha cuidado com os motoristas bbados.) Could we get back to the question of funding? (Poderamos retornar questo do financiamento?) I think you need to cut down on the number of cigarettes you smoke! (Acho que voc precisa reduzir o nmero de cigarros que fuma!) I'm looking forward to the party. (Estou aguardando ansioso pela festa.)
