Animals Animals in Captivity Essay: For many people, the zoo is a source of childhood amazement and fond memories: swinging monkeys, laughing hyenas and growling tigers. Conservationists say zoos advance their educational and preservationist (ecologist) efforts, but others see zoos as prisons where innocent creatures are unjustly held captive. ( imprisoned) What do you think? Arguments Yes Zoos Provide Education and Conservation Zoos have to educate the public about the innocent creatures ( living things) so that they understand the importance of conservation. Zoos and aquariums give people an appreciation ( approval, admiration) for the animals. They need to see, listen to, and smell them. Viewing an animal on TV does not give a person the same kind of love and respect for the creature as seeing it in person does. Zoos Encourage Research and Recreation ( amusement) The more we learn about animals, the better we can preserve( defend, care for) them and provide for their needs. Zoos provide the opportunity for people to come together and learn about the creatures we share the planet with, supporting wildlife conservation( protection) programs for thousands of animal species. The Wild is No Animal's Paradise The boundaries of the wild are becoming smaller each day. Animals face many challenges traffic/development, hunting, habitat (home) loss, poaching(hunting), and so forth. The wild is not necessarily such a wonderful place. No Zoos Invest Little Time and Funds in Animal Care Precious funds that should be used to provide more humane conditions ( civilized, caring) for animals are often wasted on improvements aimed at attracting visitors such as landscaping, carousels, refreshment stands, and gift shops. Zoos Cannot Replicate Wild Animals' Habitats Animals are closely confined (restricted, limited) , lack ( be short of)privacy, and have little opportunity for mental stimulation or physical exercise. These conditions often result in abnormal and self-destructive (violent) behavior. Zoos Propagate Rather Than Educate Protecting species from extinction sounds like a noble goal, but for the most part, animals bred in captivity, including threatened (in danger) and endangered wildlife, cannot be released to the wild because they never have the opportunity to learn important survival skills. Some animals also pick up diseases at zoos that could endanger wild population. Zoos are the Wrong Place to Save Animals Zoos continue to capture animals from the wild to put them on public display( show) . Taking animals from the wild is not only traumatic for (hurtful)them, it is also detrimental ( harmful, negative) to their health. Several zoos have already recognized that they cannot adequately provide for the complex needs of animals.

Can medical research on animals be justified? Essay: No one appreciates using animals for experimentation, but the medical community has long insisted that such research helps develop potentially life-saving drugs and treatments. Is this justification (reason) convincing enough to continue using animals for medical research? What do you think? Arguments: No Animals Suffer Greatly; Morals at Issue The use of animals in medical research is morally unjustifiable (unforgivable) not just because it slows down medical progress for humans, but because it is inhumane.( cruel, sadistic) Animal testing essentially and unavoidably causes animal pain, distress, and suffering. Animal research is wasteful and expensive In addition to scientific and humane motivation, there are also significant economic advantages to the acceptance of replacements for animal tests. Animal-based methods are normally very costly in money and time. Non-animal test methods are typically less morally unjustifiable costly and time-consuming, and may require lower investment in personnel and other resources. Animals research harms the environment A little-discussed problem with the use of animals in medical research is the environmental impact. Yet the use and disposal of millions of animals each year greatly diminishes (reduce) the quality of our air, soil, and water.

More Relevant and Reliable Research Tools and Techniques Exist Human clinical, epidemiological studies and computer simulators are faster, more reliable, less expensive, and more humane than animal tests. Comparative studies of human populations allow doctors and scientists to discover the root causes of human diseases and disorders so that preventive action can be taken.
