IV Read the text about gossiping and then answer the questions. Gossip Even though your mother probably told you not to gossip, recent studies have shown that gossip is good for us. Gossip has very important social functions. It holds society together by reinforcing our moral code. It helps us make social comparisons. While we listen to other peoples problems, our personal difficulties seem less important. Celebrities often complain about gossip, but in reality, well-known people often profit from being the targets of gossip since the rumors humanize them. They become more real and we are able to identify with them more easily. Many celebrities press agents invent gossip when their clients newest film is about to debut. Gossip attracts the publics attention. Gossip also instructs people on what the limits on personal behavior are in a particular society. A person who is new in a group can learn what behaviors are tolerated by listening to what group members gossip about. When a person gets a new job, he can read the company rules in the handbook, but to really know how to function in the office, he or she should listen to the gossip at the water cooler. Who people are talking about and what they are criticizing lets you know whos in charge and what is expected of you. 1 2 3 4 5 How does gossiping help hold society together? _____________________________ How can celebrities profit from gossip? _____________________________ Why do press agents often invent gossip about their clients? _____________________________ What should you do if you are new in the office? _____________________________ Why should you do this? _____________________________
