It was brought to our attention that one of our members (who remains anonymous) donated $500 to Sonrise Mission, a local Teen Help Center. The donation was just in time to pay the light bill! The Mission is so grateful for your kindness and we are so proud that one of our own helped to keep the Mission open and functioning for those in need. We know that there are many people that are less fortunate than others. It is crucial to our Chapter that we make time to give back and help our community in any way we can. Your donations and contributions were used to help so many this past year and we just want to say THANK YOU for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Is Entrepreneurship For You?

very day I see social networking sites with posts after posts of people marketing or claiming they can offer the best advice on How to Become Your Own Boss. Sure, on the surface, it sounds great. You work for yourself, no-one to report to, you come and go as you please with all the perks, but the truth is, even as an entrepreneur you still work for someone else. As an entrepreneur you always work for your customers. You have to be there, on call, the main point of contact, readily available and always, always, always with a smile! Now I am in no way knocking entrepreneurship. When all the work is put in it can be a very lucrative and rewarding experience; however, there are many of us who are born leaders and others that are born supporters. Born leaders are those that cant help but to give direction, motivate others, use their resources to get results, and those with the skill to effectively communicate with others all while getting them to buy into whatever it is you are selling. Born leaders like to be on the top. They like to take control and make tough decisions. On the other hand, born supporters are those that are the backbone of the business. They learn everything about the job functions and deliver on their commitment to execute any task given. Born supporters know how to take direction, jump in when the ball is dropped and they are always willing to learn more about the business they are in to secure their value within an organization. Both of these very different roles are equally important to the success of an organization and either of them can offer a wealth of rewards when paired with discipline, commitment and sacrifice. If you are undecided about becoming an entrepreneur and need some guidance, here are a few things to take into consideration: 1. Do you have the time, resources, and marketing skills necessary to work for yourself? 2. Calculate your minimum desired annual salary necessary to support your lifestyle. If you start your own business, how soon can you bring in that profit? 3. Are you disciplined enough to work for yourself? Keep a one-week journal of your daily activities. Ask yourself these questions and do a serious analysis of your lifetime goals and see if entrepreneurship is the right avenue for you. Your decisions determine the course of your life and while we cannot turn back time, we can always find ways to make sure how we spend our time is just as rewarding as the costs it brings. -Mary V. Davids, Editor in Chief
This Quarter we are shining our spotlight on one of our most engaged and influential members Sylvia Appolon. Appolon currently works at ChildNet, Inc. a Community Based Care lead agency that serves as an advocate for abused, abandoned, and neglected children. Appolon is a Termination of Parental Rights Specialist at ChildNet, Inc. Appolon is a devoted, organized, and focused individual that we have had the pleasure to work alongside this past year. In addition to her work experience, Appolon serves on the NSUSHRM Board of Directors in a dual role capacity as Co-President and Communications Chairperson. Sylvia is active in the community and is always available and willing to lend a helping hand for those in need all while remaining active in her church and continuing to focus on her studies here at Nova Southeastern University. We salute our very own this Quarter and are looking forward to sharing her successful career stories with you in the future.

If you know a student that you would like to be considered , please email us and include a brief description of why you believe your recommendation should be chosen.

Building Your Brand

Everything that you say either helps your brand or it hurts it. When you post your comments, opinions, or daily thoughts on various social networking sites, people are connecting with who you are and that helps them to form an opinion about what role you will play in their lives. Employers look at your social networking activity and that also can determine if you are offered a position or a promotion with an organization. It is so crucial to your overall success that you are mindful of what you say and who you say it to. Any good marketing representative knows that the only way to get people to buy into what you are selling is to get their attention. You get their attention by finding a way to connect with them personally. Finding a common interest and getting them to see that you can relate to them in some way always helps to seal the deal. Here are a few tips on building your brand. Tip 1: Stay positive. Like the saying goes, if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all! Tip 2: Remove/un-tag any unfavorable pictures of you that may be on the internet. The last thing you want a prospective employer to see is you downing drinks at a frat party. Tip 3: Update your professional profile/web page at least once a month, even if it is an updated picture or a positive comment. These tips should help you get on track and ensure you have a professional appearance online and in person. -Mary V. Davids, Editor in Chief

Company of the Quarter

Founded in 2004, Youth Survivors Foundation, Inc., (YSFI) is a non-profit organization mainly focused on providing resources to disadvantaged youth by teaching them life skills and offering guidance and support to help them plan their futures. YSFI volunteers are actively involved in the foundations group mentor program. The program volunteers go to local middle and high schools to help the most troubled students and the foundation mainly focuses on youth that are having challenges with their academics and personal issues in life such as difficulty resolving conflict. Teaching troubled youth various life skills and helping them to navigate through school and life with the tools they need to help them become successful is what YSFI is all about. I interviewed the founder of YSFI Shaheewa T. Jarrett Gelin, Esq., who says she started the foundation as a result of having a life-long interest in helping troubled and disadvantaged youth. Gelin discovered that most of the youth she engaged with did not lack intellect, they lacked confidence. For this reason, Gelin devised a plan to help and 9 years later, the foundation is still actively involved in the community. Ultimately, Gelin hopes to expand the foundation to offer an At Risk Teen Shelter to those youth in minority communities that may not have the resources necessary to develop succession life planning. To find out more about YSFI or to volunteer for one of the group mentor programs, visit their website at www.ysfi.org.
