RABBINIC REFLECTION
CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG
very year, at about this time, I ask myself the following question: What makes the holiday of Chanukah second only to Passover in its popularity among American Jews? I suppose it depends upon whom you ask. Is it the gift-giving nature of the festival? Is it the delicious jelly doughnuts, latkes and chocolate gelt we get to consume? Or is it the beautiful songs we sing, and the joy and happiness we feel when we gather with family and friends? Maybe Chanukah is observed in such a widespread fashion among our people because of the accessible nature of kindling the menorah each night. But lighting the Chanukah candles is not any more accessible than lighting the Shabbat candles every Friday night. In fact, the blessings we recite are practically the same. So perhaps, then, it is because we are drawn in by the miraculous nature of the story itself - as we recount how a single cruse of pure oil lasted for eight days when it was only supposed to be enough for just twenty four hours. After all, who doesnt love to hear a tale whose lesson is focused on some great miracle? But the true story of Chanukah is about numerous miracles. Looking back in history, the years between 176 and 164 BCE were critical for the Jewish people and Judaism as a religion. It was in the year 176 BCE that Antiochus IV became the ruler of the Syrian Empire, whose kingdom included the Land of Israel. Before long, Antiochus began to refer to himself as Epiphanes, meaning God made manifest. Antiochus quickly instituted Hellenism- a civilization based on the Greek culturethat by decree he mandated was to be the compulsory way of life for everyone. While some Jews were drawn in and compelled by the abundance of new theatres, gymnasia, and the overall worship of human beauty and strength, many others realized that this was idolatry, and it threatened the very essence of Jewish belief, practice and ultimately, survival. Seeing that something had to be done right away, a spiritual band of Jews - known as the Maccabees - rose to power to defend Jewish distinctiveness against the dominant Greek culture. While part of the Maccabees focus was ridding the Temple of the Zeus statute and purifying the altar so that it could once again be used for worship, more than anything else, the Maccabees were ghting desperately against a force that wanted the Jews to completely abandon their religion and their culture. Judah Maccabee and his followers unhesitatingly stood up and armed that until their dying day, they would hold on to what made them unique as a people. ankfully, despite mind-boggling odds against the erce
and homogenizing Syrian-Greek army, the Maccabees were able to defeat their enemies and eventually restore Jewish sovereignty over the Land thereby ushering in an era of renewed Jewish cultural, spiritual, and political power and authenticity. No doubt- it would have been a lot easier for the Jewish people to assimilate and leave their religious lifestyles behind. In doing so, they would have immediately t in and quite certainly have suered much less persecution. And so, as you can well imagine, the holiday of Chanukah came to be- more than anything else- a celebration focused on arming the pride and joy of being Jewish amid a largely nonJewish world. e holiday of Chanukah is about daring to be dierent and celebrating that dierence. For at its essence, Chanukah is about Jewish survival based on Jewish self-armation. Yes, being Jewish has always meant- not being better- but being dierent. At its core, Chanukah stands as the celebration of the victory of those who refused to conform. And I dont need to tell you that the very same pressure still exists today. We try so hard to look and dress like everyone else, to talk like everyone else, and to t in so perfectly and completely. ere is no question that we live in multiple civilizations at the same time Jewish and American, Chanukah and Christmas, and the list goes on. Learning to balance the emotional demands of American culture with the spiritual obligations of Jewish civilization is both the challenge and the opportunity of what it means to live as a Jew in America. is is no doubt a time on the calendar lled with emotional ambivalences- and we are presented with the chance to rearm unconditional pride in who we are and what we believe. As Chanukah begins again (on Friday night, December 8, 2012), and we actively participate in bringing renewed light into this increasingly dark and scary world, let us recall with great aection and appreciation what the Maccabees did- as well as so many of our ancestors throughout Jewish history- so that we can be free today to observe a religion that oers us so much. is year as we kindle one more light each night, seeking to ascend in holiness, may we arm the Chasidic teaching that the Chanukah candles truly are the search lights for what is precious in our tradition and in each one of us, helping us to shine more fully and completely as authentic Jews in the modern world. Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a Chag Urim Sameach- a holiday lled with light and happiness now and always!

t is a Jewish tradition to give children candy when they study Torah so that they will associate the sweetness of the candy with the sweetness of Torah. e educational theory of summer camping is similar: If children come to associate Jewish life with sweetness the smell of pine trees, the closeness of friends, laughter in the bunk what they practice and what they learn at camp will remain with them for a lifetime. WHY? Camp is fun. Camp is Jewish. Camp makes Judaism fun! Services, Hebrew, Jewish Songs, and saying blessings before and after a meal all become connected to being in a favorite place with favorite people. is association stays with a child throughout his/her life causing him/her to seek out Jewish experiences and communities so that they can recapture some of that wonderful spirit. Jewish camping also connects Judaism with daily living. Judaism is in the air, the trees, the grass, the pool, the ball game, the skinned knee, the ice cream, and even in the mail from home. Summer camping is the only way to pack Judaism into every experience; it isfor childrenthe only way to nd Mt. Sinai in the Midwest. Our regional Conservative camp is Camp Ramah. Just two hours north of Toronto, Camp Ramah is located on a beautiful lake in the heart of Muskoka. e camp oers extensive waterfront activities, as well as a wide range of sports, sports, and specialty programs. Ramah campers, grades 2-10, develop skills, build close friendships, and create memories that last a lifetime. Moreover, they are inspired by Jewish role models and are immersed in a loving, Jewish environment that enriches the soul. If you would like to talk more about Jewish camping or to provide nancial assistance to a student interested a camp experience this coming summer please contact me. Congregation Shaarey Zedek oers camp scholarships as well; please contact CSZ Oce Manager Shelley Golsky at 248/357-5544 or email sgolsky@shaareyzedek.org for more information. May our children always associate Judaism with fun . . . and with God, Torah, Israel, and a life of meaning.

halom! As temperatures drop and our hours of sunlight shorten, our thoughts turn to the nes, gadol, hayah, and sham of our spinning driedels. But Chanukah is about more than just eating deep-fried potato latkes and gambling for gelt. After sunset, we gather together near the doorways and window sills of our homes to spread ames from the shamash to its neighboring candles. e mitzvah of the holiday lies not only in the lighting of the Chanukiah, but also in sharing its warm glow with friends, family members, and the unknown passersby. In this busy age, we work late, we have piano lessons, and we attend sleepovers. We have homework to complete and dinner parties to prepare. What better time than now to teach your family about the lessons of Chanukah? Many Jewish laws and traditions have much to do with bringing awareness of Gods presence in our lives into each moment and Chanukah is no exception. Upon gathering together around an unlit Chanukiah, you could ask your family to take a minute to consider and appreciate the company around them. After lighting candles, you might ask your family to bask in the silence of the moment to see if they can hear the re ickering. While bathing in the Chanukiah's ames, you can talk with your children about the symbolism of bringing light into your home by treating someone with extra kindness when they are having a dicult day or doing Tikkun Olam in your community. Around the dinner table, you can recount histories about the miracles of the holiday-the triumph of the Maccabees over the Greeks or the one-day supply of oil that burned in the Holy Temple for eight days-or the miracles experienced by your own family this year. Wishing you heaping portions of applesauce and sour cream, all the gelt in the bag, and the sustained warmth of the glowing candles on the eight nights of Chanukah.

For children presently in the first grade at Shaarey Zedek Religious School and Hillel Day School.
In this New Year 5773, one goal or hope I have for my family is... something ritual in the home e.g., candlelighting, making challah, saying Shema before bed, or Motzi before a meal. something tzedakah-oriented e.g., making regular visits to a senior center, starting to compost, or having children put coins into a tzedakah box before Shabbat. something synagaogue-oriented e.g., attending Shabbat services twice a month, attending synagogue social events, or inviting childrens Religious School friends for dinner. something else you can think of that makes you a stronger family.
Through this ceremony, we impress upon our young children the value of Jewish learning and stress their own importance to us and to the future of Klal Yisrael. Each child will be presented with a gift from the congregation. Our entire membership is cordially invited to attend this ceremony. Following the service, the students and their families are invited to enjoy a luncheon celebration in their honor.
