SISTEMI ZA SUZBIVANJE NA EKSPLOZII Explosion Suppression Systems

From explosion testing, to explosion venting systems, to explosion suppression systems, and to explosion isolation systems, Reliable has the strategies and tools to protect your plant from the devastation of process explosions. The Components of Explosion Suppression Systems An explosion suppression system consists of three components, and optionally, a fourth. Preceeding a deflagration, a pressure wave ripples out from the epicenter of the explosion. Explosion suppression systems use pressure sensor detectors to detect and act upon the developing explosion. A good pressure sensor will detect a sharp increase in pressure in one millisecond. The control panel receives the detection signal from the pressure sensors and then sends a release signal to the container containing fire suppressant. The elapsed time from receipt of detection to transmission of the release command is less than one millisecond. Fire suppressant containers hold fire suppressing agents, and release the agent at the command of the control panel. Since explosion pressures can reach dangerous levels in less than 50 milliseconds, the agent must be released and dispersed in a matter of milliseconds. Suppressant agents typically include Carbon Dioxide, FM-200, and water mist. Opitionally, an explosion suppression system may contain either a mechanical or chemical isolation system to prevent flame or pressure from traveling though connected ducts or piping into other process equipment. Isolation is usually complete within 5 milliseconds of detection. Benefits of Explosion Suppression Systems For years explosion venting was the primary strategy for explosion protection. In many cases venting is still the optimal choice, but venting can be used in conjunction with explosion suppression systems. There are a number of benefits from the use of explosion suppression systems:

Extinguishes fire within the equipment preventing fire damage Prevents pressure piling and secondary explosions Complies with NFPA standards preventing venting of explosions indoors Retains toxic or valuable materials within the process equipment Integrates with the process controls to enable other protection systems Suppresses class ST III dust hazards Can use gas cartridges instead of explosive devices to release suppressant Provides more flexibility in fire protection strategies

Explosion Venting Not Always The Best Solution For many years the accepted explosion management strategy was venting. Used in the correct way, explosion venting still is a viable strategy. However, there are circumstances where venting is impractical and suppression preferable. These include facilities where:

The protected equipment is indoors The explosive material has a high KST or is a hybrid Insufficient available area on the equipment for adequate venting Process material is toxic and can't be vented into the atmosphere No safe place to vent High flame propagation possibility though interconnections

Explosion Testing
About Explosion Products and Services To mitigate against the threat of industrial explosions, Reliable fire provides a wide range of explosion protection products and services to industry. From explosion testing, to explosion venting systems, to explosion suppression systems, and to explosion isolation systems, Reliable has the strategies and tools to protect your plant from the devastation of process explosions. Explosion Testing Understanding the explosibility characteristics of your particular process media, or other explosion hazard, is the first step toward obtaining effective protection. In some cases, these characteristics may be well defined and documented. If the desired data is not available for your specific hazard, Reliable Fire with Fike Corporation can test your materials in accordance with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and ISO (International Standard Organization) procedures. A wide range of standard tests are available as well as the ability to conduct specialized "large scale" tests at our remote facility. Testing is critical for gaining the knowledge you need to maintain a safe, protected work place. Maximum Oxygen Concentration (MOC) also available. Lowest spark energy required to initiate a dust explosion. Assesses relative sensitivity of the sample to ignition by electrical sparks. Minimum temperature at which a dust layer will ignite when exposed to a heated surface. Provides a relative measure of dust ignitability. Minimum temperature at which a dust cloud will autoignite when exposed to air heated in a furnace. (MAIT) provides a relative measure of dust cloud ignitability.

Explosion Venting Systems

About Explosion Venting Systems To mitigate against the threat of industrial explosions, Reliable fire provides a wide range of explosion protection products and services to industry. From explosion testing, to explosion suppression systems, to explosion isolation systems, and to explosion venting systems, Reliable has the strategies and tools to protect your plant from the devastation of process explosions. General Theory of Explosion Venting The general theory of explosion venting systems is a simple one. When an explosion occurs in an industrial vessel, the resulting pressure can cause the vessel to rupture in a catastrophic failure. If, however, a planned pathway allows expanding gases to escape to the atmosphere, the integrity of the vessel will remain intact. Strategically placed explosion vents provide just such a pathway. The vent openings are sized to allow the expanding gases to be vented at a rapid rate so as to limit the internal pressure in the vessel. Special Explosion Venting Considerations Not all venting needs to allow flames into the atmosphere. Shown at right is a flameless vent for use in applications where it is unacceptable to allow open flames in the work area. In some processes a sanitary design requiring vacuum service is required. Special vents, as shown at left, are available for cyclic or pulsing duty. Explosion Venting Not Always The Best Solution For many years the accepted explosion management strategy was venting. Used in the correct way, explosion venting still is a viable strategy. However, there are circumstances where venting is impractical and suppression preferable. These include facilities where:

The protected equipment is indoors The explosive material has a high KST or is a hybrid Insufficient available area on the equipment for adequate venting Process material is toxic and can't be vented into the atmosphere No safe place to vent

Explosion Isolation Systems

About Explosion Isolation Systems To mitigate against the threat of industrial explosions, Reliable fire provides a wide range of explosion protection products and services to industry. From explosion testing, to explosion venting systems, to explosion suppression systems, and to explosion isolation systems, Reliable has the strategies and tools to protect your plant from the devastation of process explosions. The strategy behind explosion isolation is to prevent flame propagation from one piece of process equipment to another or to a personnel occupied area. In practical terms, this means that process areas can be zoned to minimize the affects of downtime in the event of an explosion. The Components of Explosion Isolation Systems An explosion isolation system consists of four components. There are two types of isolation systems-mechanical and

chemical. In the mechanical system an isolation valve physically isolates the affected vessel. An explosion detector detects the leading pressure wave of an ongoing explosion, and sends a signal to the system controller in one millisecond. The system controller sends a signal to a gas cartridge actuator to fire the actuator. The gas from the cartridge closes an isolation valve, sealing of the explosion. The entire process occurs in milliseconds to avoid the spread of the explosion. With the chemical isolation system, a chemical dispersal unit is activated instead of an isolation valve. Most often chemical isolation systems are used to protect large duct systems from the spread of fire.
