1. Who is the persona in the poem and what is his relationship to Pedro/Pete? How is this established in the poem?

The persona in the poem is the writer herself and she has a platonic relationship with Pedro/Pete that most probably began during their childhood years. It is established in the poem by the first line wherein the writer addresses her work to Pete whom she referred to as old friend and in the second stanza where she reminded Pete of a memory that took place when both were in grade four.

2. Does the poem sound like a letter? Do you think this style of writing effectively opens up to the reader the narrative world of the persona?

Yes, the poem sounds like a letter. I do think that this style of writing effectively opens up to the reader the narrative world of the persona even on the first line when she addressed the recipient as her old friend and told him the various developments in their hometown.

3. What are the dominant emotions or sentiments running through or underneath the text? Imagine yourself as the persona writing the letter. In the process of writing, what feelings/sentiments/emotions might you be having as you say the lines or tell Pedro of the developments in your town? What thoughts are running through your mind? Elaborate.

The dominant emotions or sentiments running through or underneath the text are longing and contentment. I refer to longing as the writer impliedly wishes her friend Pete to witness these developments of their hometown with her and contentment because even if she wishes for him to be there, she knew that Pete is happy with his life and she just wishes him the best. Imagining that I am the persona writing the letter, I would feel longing and contentment with the same reason as I have presented above. But other than that, I would also feel the importance or value of the friendship that we have shared for years. I would also feel fortunate to still have a strong bond with Pete and know that nothing has

changed between us. Most of all, I would feel happiness because we still have communication and it makes us catch up with each others lives and it also gives us a feeling of togetherness although we are definitely miles apart.

4. Comment on the use of humor and its potent combination with the social critique in the poem. The hint or use of humor in the poem gives off a feeling of closeness between the two: the writer and the recipient who is called Pete. Having planted humor in the poem also kills whatever awkwardness that could have been present considering the fact that the two of them are so far from each other. The writer acting like a social critique especially in the various developments taking place in their hometown emanates a feeling of confidence in the value of their friendship because she is confident enough to give her honest criticisms about different stuffs. In addition to that, it also implies that whatever criticisms she might have is something that the other party, Pete, could understand and probably agree with her too.
