Typhoon Quinta left 5 dead, 1 missing, 1S injured

TACLOBAN CITY - Ty p h o o n Q u i n t a left five dead, one injured, one missing and a landslide at Sogod, Southern, Leyte after it hit some areas in Eastern Visayas. T h e O ff i c e o f t h e Civil Defence (OCD) Regional Director Rey Gozon disclosed that three members of the family in Maydolong, Eastern Samar died after their house was pinned down by a tree. There are also two fishermen found floating in Merida, Leyte and Borongan City in Eastern Samar after their banca capsized when storm Quinta hit in the areas. We h a v e a l r e a d y accounted this, and yesterday we have found the two missing fishermen floating dead, Gozon said. Further, the national highway hit by landslides in Sogod, Southern Leyte is now passable to all types of vehicles, according to the OCD director. No matter from what angle we look at the issue, even if we take the atheist view, we cannot escape from the reality that our life, in its utter objectivity, not minding first our subjectivity, is a life with God. And thats simply because God is the one giving us our very existence. And precisely because it is existence that he gives us, he cannot but be the one also to keep and maintain it, otherwise, if he withdraws from us, then we would cease to exist. For sure, our existence does not depend solely on the food we eat, the water we drink, the good health and other things that we may enjoy.

They contribute, of course, but it is God who is first of all responsible for our existence. With this clarification, we overcome what may be referred to as the deistic bias which considers God only as Creator, giving us our existence at the start of our life, but leaving us alone after that.

And so he is always in us as he is also in all other creatures and things. That is why we say God is everywhere. He is omnipresent. And if that is so, then he is also in each one of us. Except that in our case, his presence in us is not meant to be simply passive or inert. It is an active presence that corresponds to our

nature as a person endowed with the power to know, to be free and responsible, to choose, to love, etc. In short, we are supposed to correspond to that presence by at least being aware of him and then start developing a relationship that reflects all the aspects of our lifepersonal, spiritual, social, material, professional, economic, political, etc. This is where we have to cultivate the skill of recognizing his presence wherever we are. We need to cultivate this skill, exerting the appropriate effort for it, because being aware of his presence does not come to us automatically. deeday a. cairo Before I thought of writing on the subject matter, I was warned by my daughter never to use 4Ps to mean Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program as they have received a Memorandum from Secretary Soliman regarding the issue. I had to ask, why? To my mind, 4Ps is easy to remember and easier to pronounce. I was told that most often, clients mispronounce it to four fish or others mean the Ps as Peace processes. To most of my friends who have aversion to dole-outs, they think that the Pantawid program is a dole-out and is teaching the poor to be lazy or even lazier. This article to intended for them. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program is a strategy taken from the Mexico Experience that empowers the poorest of the poor to participate in economic activities like budgeting, spending and buying. A family beneficiary gets educational and health grants from the government. From the meager amount of 300 pesos each family gets for a child of 3 to 14 years old for a maximum of 3 children per family, the family can send their children to school and for these children to be able to have access to health interventions. It is not a dole-out program as there are conditions the family has to adopt in order for it to be in the program otherwise, the beneficiaries are not given the cash grant. Aside from the 300 pesos per child with ages 3-14, the family also receives 500 pesos as health grant for 0-5 years old children including de-worming. The assistance ensures that children of poor families are able to acquire primary education and are able to get access to health amenities. This means that children of poor families who

Retail industry logs strong performance

RETAIL grew strong in Cebu in 2012 despite the intense market competition, retailers said. Strong overseas remittances, high spending power of young consumers, business expansions, sustained tourism arrivals and the increased confidence on the Aquino Government bolstered growth in the industry despite continuing global challenges. We have a vibrant retail industry this year. Players are busy meeting the demands of the consumers, said Philippine Retail Association (PRA)-Cebu chapter president Jun Yap. NSFED road, bridges projects inaugurated, holds media tour

C ATA R M A N , Northern,SamarThe Northern Samar First En g ine er i n g D i str ict of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) here headed by district engineer Sandy Pua and is being aided by his assistant Raulito Yangzon on Dec. 19, 2012, inaugurated and blessed a four-month construction of road slip project costing P20.6 million. The said road section located at Brgy. Makagtas here is at the same time part of the national road going through and from the Catarman-Calbayog national highway. Apart from this, in their simultaneous activity, also inaugurated is the 75 linear-meter road slip and flood control p r o j e c t i n B r g y. Hibabaogan here in Catarman that costs P9.5 million and its construction runs for three months which was being closely supervised and monitored by their districts technical personnel. Vi l l a g e o f f i c i a l s , including senior Board Member Dr. Jojo Layon, who represented Gov. Paul Daza together with PNP Provincial Director Senior Supt. Isaias Tonog and Col. N o e l Ve s t u i r o f t h e Philippine Army, also graced the event while Msgr. Romeo Infante officiated the mass and the blessing rites. With this road and flood control project, access from Catarman to Calbayog City is more or less an hour of travel, whereas before it would take an hour and a half of travel because of its soil erosion before that reaches up to the national highway , a daily commuter said.
