Begin heel (straight heel cap). Divide stitches so that when you begin the heel the cables will be centered on the ankle sides. Heel is knit in straight stitch. Heel width is worked on 1-2 sts less than half the total number of sts. Work heel back and forth in st st over the first 15 sts of needle 1 and last 15 sts of needle 4, leave rem sts unworked. (Remember to make sure you keep the cables centered over the ankles.) Edge st: sl the first st of each row to facilitate picking up heel sts. Heel length: work 2 rows less than the amount of sts for width (30 sts=28 rows). Next row (rs): from the center out, k2, SKP (sl 1, k1, psso), k1, turn Next row: (ws): sl 1 purlwise, p5 (= 2 sts past the center), p2tog, p1, turn Next row: sl 1 knitwise, k to within 1 st of turning gap, skp, k1, turn Next row: sl 1 purlwise, p to within 1 st of turning gap; p2tog, p1, turn. Rep last 2 rows until half the amount of heel sts are reached in the center Rep last 2 rows, but discontinue dec at end of each row. After all sts have been worked each side, work to the center of the next rs row = end of heel cap. Cut reinforcement thread to be woven in at end. Pick up heel sts to begin instep decrease. (Note: With a dp needle, I pick up the stitches along the heel and then knit them. It seems to make it easier.)

Using all 4 needles, cont in rnds as foll. Work to last 2 sts on first needle, k2tog; work even over sts on needles 2 and 3; SKP at beg of needle 4 (heel). Rep dec rnd every other row until there are the same number of stitches before beg heel. Work in rnds until foot is appropriate length before toe. Toe dec (add reinforcing thread) Divide sts over the sole (16 st each needle), 1st and 4th needles over top of foot, 2nd and 3rd needles over the sole. Dec rnd 1: On 1st and 3rd needles, k to last 2 sts, k2tog; on 2nd and 4th needles, k2 SKP on first two sts Rep dec rnd 1 every 2nd rnd until half the sts remain. Then rep dec rnd 1 ever rnd until less than 10 sts rem. Cut yarn and pull through rem sts. Weave in ends.
