Overview
Introduction

What is GPScorrect?
GPScorrect is an extension to the ArcPad 6.0 software. It communicates with a Trimble GPS Pathfinder receiver connected to a field computer, allowing you to set GPS parameters in the receiver and collect postprocessable GPS positions for features that you create in ArcPad. GPScorrect can be used with a wide variety of real-time sources of differential corrections, including an external radio, or a Beacon-on-a-Belt (BoB) receiver. Depending on your GPS receiver, GPScorrect also enables you to use integrated beacon, satellite, or WAAS corrections. Once you have collected GPS position data with GPScorrect, you can use the GPS Pathfinder Express service or the GPS Pathfinder Office software to differentially correct the GPS data and apply those corrections to the Shapefiles collected in ArcPad.

Using the GPScorrect extension

GPScorrect runs automatically in the background when you start ArcPad, and controls communication between ArcPad and the GPS receiver. If you want to view status information or change settings, use the GPScorrect user interface (UI). The functions of the GPScorrect UI are divided into sections: Use the Skyplot, Satellite Info, Receiver, and Real-time sections to view summary or detailed information about the GPS receiver, configured real-time sources, and the location and health of the satellites your receiver is tracking. Use the Setup areas in these sections to quickly change GPS settings or to access GPS and real-time settings in the Setup section. Use the Setup section to control how the GPScorrect extension interacts with the GPS receiver and any real-time correction sources, and to define logging settings for postprocessing the Shapefiles that you collect in the ArcPad software. Use the Plan section to view an animated skyplot and graph of DOP values over the next few hours, so that you can plan your data collection session around the times when satellite geometry is at its best. Use the UTC Time section to display the current UTC time so you can take a calibration photograph for use with the MediaMapper software. Use the About section to view copyright, licensing, and version information. More...

ActiveSync
Microsoft ActiveSync is a program that lets you exchange information between your office computer and a CE device. It is used whenever you: install software on the CE device move or copy files to or from the CE device synchronize data between your office computer and the CE device NOTE CE devices are usually supplied with the ActiveSync software. ActiveSync is also available from the Microsoft website. Before you can exchange information you need to establish a connection between the two computers. The first time you connect your CE device to your desktop computer, ActiveSync prompts you to set up either a partnership or guest relationship between the two computers. A partnership is a permanent relationship, and information about it is stored on the desktop computer. A partnership also lets you synchronize data between the two computers. A guest relationship lasts only as long as the two computers are connected. NOTE Trimble recommends that you use a guest relationship to connect to a TSCe data collector, and an ActiveSync partnership to connect to other CE devices. More...

46

Collecting data
Data collection with the GPScorrect extension is exactly like data collection with ArcPad alone. Once you have enabled GPS logging in GPScorrect, you do not have to do anything extra to ensure that GPS data is logged to SSF files. Simply create or edit layers and features in ArcPad as usual. In ArcPad, each feature type is stored in a Shapefile. When you create a layer or add features to an existing layer, GPScorrect automatically creates an SSF file with the same filename and stores all GPS position information for that feature type in the corresponding SSF file. NOTE You cannot log new GPS positions to an SSF file that is more than a week old. To maintain accurate storage, it is necessary to limit the time-span of a data file to seven days.

GPS
This section lists possible causes of, and solutions for, the following problems with GPS or your GPS receiver: The message No GPS detected appears The receiver has not acquired a satellite within three minutes of GPScorrect starting The receiver cannot compute a GPS position within one minute of GPScorrect starting

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

65

The message No GPS detected appears

Possible cause GPScorrect is configured to connect to the wrong COM port. The GPS receivers battery is dead, or is connected incorrectly. The cable connecting the field computer to the GPS receiver is not connected, is connected incorrectly, or is faulty. The COM port on the field computer is faulty. Solution Check that the COM port specified in the GPS Settings form is the COM port that the GPS receiver is connected to. Check that the battery is correctly connected and is charged, or connect to an external power source. Check that the cable is connected correctly. If it appears to be correct and all other equipment appears to be correct, the cable may require servicing. Check that the COM port is undamaged. If it appears to be damaged, the field computer may require servicing.

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

66

The receiver has not acquired a satellite within three minutes of GPScorrect starting
Possible cause The receiver is still looking for satellites. The satellites are being obstructed. Your GPS receivers external antenna (or antenna cable) is not connected, is connected incorrectly, or is faulty. The receiver has not been used for a very long time, and the almanac stored in the receiver is outdated. The receiver has been set to Base mode by another application. Solution Use the Satellite Info section to check how many satellites the GPS receiver is tracking. The obstruction may be a building, a tree, or a large vehicle. Identify the obstruction and move away from it. GPS does not work indoors. Check that the external antenna is connected correctly. If your receiver still fails to acquire signals from a satellite, then your antenna and/or antenna cable may require servicing. Wait for up to 15 minutes until a new almanac has been recorded. Subsequent restarts should then be rapid. Reset the GPS receiver.

Troubleshooting

67

The receiver cannot compute a GPS position within one minute of GPScorrect starting
Possible cause Too few satellites are available. Four satellites (SVs) are required to compute a position. Solution Use mission planning to check that sufficient satellites are visible. In the GPS Settings form, check that the minimum elevation value is not too high. If necessary, move the slider bar to the left to increase productivity. In the GPS Settings form, check that the minimum SNR value is not too high. If necessary, move the slider bar to the left to increase productivity. Use mission planning to check for times when the PDOP or HDOP value is below your configured maximum value. In the GPS Settings form, check that the configured maximum PDOP or HDOP value is not too low. If necessary, move the slider bar to the left to increase productivity, or clear the Slider check box and enter a larger number in the Max PDOP or Max HDOP field.

The current DOP value is too high.

Real-time differential correction

This section lists possible causes of, and solutions for, the following problems with real-time corrections or correction sources: Not all positions are corrected in real time GPScorrect is not using your first choice real-time correction source Your integrated beacon component (Pro XR or XRS receiver only) does not appear to work Your integrated satellite component (Pro XRS or Power receiver only) does not appear to work Your real-time differential correction link does not appear to work

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

69

Not all positions are corrected in real time

Possible cause GPScorrect is configured to log uncorrected GPS positions if real-time corrections are not available. Solution In the Real-time Settings form, change the selection in the last Choice field from Use uncorrected GPS to Wait for real-time. When the Wait for real-time choice is selected, and all real-time sources are unavailable, GPScorrect suspends GPS logging until real-time corrections are available again.

GPScorrect is not using your first choice real-time correction source

Possible cause Your first choice correction source is not available, so your second or third choice is being used. The correction source you expected is not set up as your preferred source. Solution In the Real-time Summary screen, check the status of your preferred correction source. Change the configuration in the Real-time Settings form if necessary, or wait until this source is available again. In the Real-time Settings form, select your preferred real-time correction source from the Choice 1 field.

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

70

Your integrated beacon component (Pro XR or XRS receiver only) does not appear to work
Possible cause You set the real-time source incorrectly. Solution In the Real-time Settings form, set one of the Choice fields to Integrated Beacon. If integrated beacon is your preferred correction source, set the Choice 1 field to Integrated Beacon. In the Integrated Beacon Settings form select appropriate options from the Mode and Frequency fields.

You set the mode or frequency incorrectly.

Your integrated satellite component (Pro XRS or Power receiver only) does not appear to work

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

71

Possible cause You have not enabled the integrated satellite component of your receiver. You entered the incorrect provider, satellite, and/or frequency. Your satellite differential subscription has expired or is not yet activated.

Solution For information on how to enable your integrated satellite component, refer to the GPS Pathfinder Systems Receiver Manual. In the Integrated Satellite Settings form, select appropriate options from the Service Provider, Name, and Frequency fields. In the Integrated Satellite Status screen, check the expiry date of your satellite differential subscription. For information on how to renew or acquire a subscription, refer to the GPS Pathfinder Systems Receiver Manual.

Troubleshooting

72

Your real-time differential correction link does not appear to work

Possible cause Your telemetry link is incorrectly installed, powered, cabled, or configured. You set the station ID incorrectly. You configured the real-time settings incorrectly. Solution Install the telemetry link as specified by the supplier. Consult the supplier if necessary. In the External Source Settings form, check that the Station ID field is set correctly. In the External Source Settings form, check that the settings match the telemetry link and the transmitted RTCM data stream.

Position accuracy
This section lists possible causes of, and solutions for, the following problems with positional accuracy: The accuracy of recorded GPS positions is not as good as you expect You cannot differentially correct your GPS positions (either in real time or in postprocessing)

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

74

The accuracy of recorded GPS positions is not as good as you expect

Possible cause You did not record sufficient positions to achieve the required accuracy. Your maximum DOP value was too high. If you record positions when the Dilution of Precision is high, this has a detrimental effect on the accuracy of these positions. Your minimum SNR or elevation value was too low. If you let the receiver use satellites with a low SNR or elevation, this may decrease the accuracy of positions calculated by the receiver. Solution In ArcPad, make sure you collect enough positions to achieve the required accuracy before closing each feature. In the GPS Settings form, move the GPS slider bar to the right, or clear the Slider check box and enter a smaller value in the Max PDOP or Max HDOP field, to make sure that the GPScorrect extension logs more accurate positions. In the GPS Settings form, move the GPS slider bar to the right, or clear the Slider check box and enter a larger value in the Min SNR and/or Min Elevation field, so that the receiver uses satellites with a strong signal.

Troubleshooting

75

Possible cause You are operating in an area of high multipath interference.

No configured real-time source is available, so the GPScorrect extension is using uncorrected positions.

Solution Move to an area with better GPS coverage and use offsets. Apply velocity filtering. In the GPS Settings form, set the Velocity Filter field to Auto to apply velocity filtering to positions as they are recorded. If you selected SuperCorrect from the Data Type field in the Logging Settings form, all positions are filtered. If at least one valid real-time correction source is selected in the Real-time Settings form, and the last Choice field is set to Wait for Real-time, then only real-time positions are filtered. In the last Choice field in the Real-time Settings form, select Wait for real-time to use differentially corrected positions only.

GPScorrect Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting

76

You cannot differentially correct your GPS positions (either in real time or in postprocessing)
Possible cause GPScorrect used satellites that were not visible to the GPS base station. Solution Before collecting data, select SuperCorrect from the Data Type field in GPScorrects Logging Settings form. Logging SuperCorrect records allows you to postprocess your data even if the satellites at the rover and base were not an exact match. Make sure the minimum elevation value in GPScorrect is high enough that the software only uses satellites that are also visible to the GPS base station. Try correcting your data using another base station file. Wait until the receiver has collected a new almanac before you log data. Before collecting data, select SuperCorrect from the Data Type field in GPScorrects Logging Settings form. Logging SuperCorrect records allows you to postprocess your data even if the satellites at the rover and base were not an exact match.

You reset the GPS Pathfinder Pocket receiver and began logging data before a new almanac was collected, causing GPScorrect to use satellites that were not visible to the base station.
