Brain Exercise

Lesson Content: Class will begin with a brain exercise. There will be a student-led discussion about how they think paper is made. I will use PowerPoint to show and read the cardboard boxs story from the side panel of Poitiers book. Students will reflect on the question posed by the book, which inquires about the future of the cardboard box. The students will also watch the clip from Youtube about the history of a man. His story is told through origami, which is yet another unique way students can see how paper can be used. This will lead into a brief concluding discussion about what paper can be made into, such as origami or Poitiers book. Students will learn what the word, origami, means and what we will be doing next week (this will including showing each class a few origami samples). Instructional Procedures: Journals will be distributed prior to the start of class so that students know where to sit. Their names are on the covers. Brain exercise: Why is an island like the letter, t? Both are in the middle of water. Students will be lead into a brief discussion about how they think paper is made. Students may be familiar with the Poitiers book, but will be reminded that a different part of the story is being read. They will be encouraged to ask questions before, during, and after the story is read.

Throughout the story, oral checks will be made to ensure that the students understand the perspective of the cardboard box, who is speaking. This will be done through informal comments or formal questions. As a conclusion, they students will be asked to thoughtfully respond to answer the cardboard boxs final question, What will happen to me next? Students will be shown the Youtube video clip about a mans history told through origami. After responding to the clip, I will briefly discuss how paper can be used to create new products, such as origami or Poitiers book. I will show a few samples of origami models to prepare each class for next weeks project. Depending on how much time is available, they will also have an opportunity to check three books before lining up and returning to class.

Assessment: By asking questions during and after the story and video clip, I will be able to determine whether or not students comprehend how paper is made and how paper can be used to create new products. The LMS will be observing me and I will ask for feedback after the completion of the lesson. Based on feedback from students reactions and the LMS, I will be able to adjust the lesson and video accordingly.
