3.1 MODBUS Protocol
The MODBUS Application Protocol (MBAP) is an industrial communication protocol that is currently mainly used in the solar sector for plant communication in PV power stations in the USA. It supports the protocol variants MODBUS TCP/IP, MODBUS RTU, and MODBUS ASCII. The MODBUS RTU protocol is, for example, used for series communication via RS485. MODBUS TCP/IP is respectively used for communication via Ethernet. The MODBUS protocol has been developed for reading data from or writing data to clearly defined data areas. The MODBUS specification [MBAP] does not specify what data is within which data area; this information must be defined specifically for a device. The fixed definition for a device is the MODBUS Profile of the device. With knowledge of the MODBUS Profile, a MODBUS client, e.g. a SCADA system, can access the data of a MODBUS server, e.g. a Sunny WebBox. The SMA MODBUS Profile is the special MODBUS Profile for SMA devices. This document describes the SMA MODBUS Profile and its use and configuration.
3.2
The SMA MODBUS Profile is a special MODBUS Profile for SMA devices that contains definitions for all SMA devices that can be connected via MODBUS (see section "Validity Supported SMA Devices", page 6). The display of the measured values and parameters of particular SMA devices on the MODBUS is individually defined in the SMA MODBUS Profile. An SMU (String Monitoring Unit), for example, only provides the information on the string currents, whereas an inverter, for example, provides the opportunity to call up power and voltage. It is not intended to provide every SMA device with a physical MODBUS interface. In order to enable access to data of an SMA device that is not MODBUS-capable, a special gateway is required. For this purpose, the functional range of the data logger (e.g. Sunny WebBox) has been extended so that it serves as both a hardware and a software interface. The SMA MODBUS Profile and the data logger form a MODBUS gateway that enables access to and the configuration of the connected SMA devices via MODBUS.

3.3
For performance reasons, it does not make any sense to display all the data saved in the SMA devices on the MODBUS data area. It was therefore sensible to reduce the available data, such as overall and daily energy, current output, voltages and currents, and assign this data to the respective MODBUS registers. This reduction and assignment between SMA device data and MODBUS addresses is illustrated in an assignment table; see also section "SMA MODBUS Profile Assignment Tables", from page 27.
Addressing MODBUS registers The address range 0-0xFFFF with 65536 addresses is available for addressing MODBUS registers. One register is 16 bits wide. For broader data formats, connected registers are used. Once the assignment of data to MODBUS addresses has been defined, e.g. MODBUS address 30803 = power frequency, it is not to be changed. For additions, spaces in the address area are left open. The MODBUS register address forms the start address of a data block. A data block equates to a single data set and is always made up of several MODBUS registers. The number of required MODBUS registers is given in the assignment table. In order to avoid inconsistencies, data blocks must always be read or written completely. The MODBUS functions "Read Holding Registers", "Read Input Registers", and "Write Multiple Registers" support this. Depending on the MODBUS specification, a maximum of 253 bytes can be transmitted to reference data during a data transmission (message). Function-dependent parameters (e.g. function code, start address, number of registers) also count as reference data. Thus, a maximum of 125 MODBUS registers can be transmitted in one message. This must be taken into consideration during the request.
3.4
Network Topology
The SMA MODBUS Profile has been designed for a hierarchical plant structure. This structure contains a data logger (Sunny WebBox, SC-COM, etc.) that is equipped with a MODBUS TCP/IP interface. All other SMA devices that are connected to the data logger via the SMA fieldbus are subordinate to the data logger.

Technical Description
Product Description
From the perspective of MODBUS, the Sunny WebBox is a MODBUS server that provides a gateway to subordinate SMA devices. The subordinate SMA devices can only be addressed using this gateway per unit ID. The assignment of the SMA devices to their unit ID is saved in an assignment table in the Sunny WebBox under the unit ID = 1 (gateway). The general plant parameters are stored there under the unit ID = 2. Each subordinate SMA device, e.g. an inverter, is therefore assigned a unit ID > 2 = (3..247)! The following graphic provides an example of the grid topology from the perspective of the MODBUS: In the graphic, the Sunny WebBox of an SMA inverter, the inverter itself and its String Monitoring Unit are assigned a unit ID. This assignment corresponds to the SMA devices mapped in the SMA MODBUS Profile.

3.4.2 SC-COM
The following graphic provides an example of the grid topology for the SC-COM from the perspective of the SMA devices:
SMA fieldbus Logical assignment of SMA device to unit ID From the perspective of MODBUS, the SC-COM is a MODBUS server that provides a gateway to subordinate SMA devices. The subordinate SMA devices can only be addressed using this gateway per unit ID. The assignment of the SMA devices to their unit ID is stored in an assignment table in the SC-COM under the unit ID = 1 (gateway). The general plant parameters are stored there under the unit ID = 2. Each subordinate SMA device, e.g. an inverter, is therefore assigned a unit ID > 2 = (3..247)!

Background information to firmware update When updating the firmware to a MODBUS-capable version (see section "Validity Supported SMA Devices", page 6), the SMA devices that are MODBUS-capable and already detected in the data logger are automatically assigned MODBUS unit IDs. Once the firmware is updated, only MODBUS must be activated. If other SMA devices are added or SMA devices are replaced, they must be detected in the data logger. When detecting other devices or replaced devices, added or replaced SMA devices are designated with the MODBUS unit ID = 255 (NaN) and therefore cannot be addressed or accessed via MODBUS. Once detection is completed, you must therefore assign these devices individual unit IDs.

If your data logger is equipped with the required firmware or you have installed the correct firmware version, you must activate the MODBUS to use it. The MODBUS interface of the data logger is deactivated by default. If necessary, you can also adjust the communication port for MODBUS to your needs using the following steps. We recommend leaving the communication port in its default setting of 502. Information on port change If you change the "MODBUS port" of the data logger, you must also change the MODBUS port of a connected MODBUS client system. Otherwise, the data logger can no longer be accessed via MODBUS.

If new or additional SMA devices are added or existing SMA devices, e.g. for servicing, are replaced, they must be detected in the data logger. Addressing new or modified devices When detecting additional or modified SMA devices, they must be designated with the MODBUS unit ID = 255 (NaN). These devices can therefore no longer be addressed and their measured values and parameters cannot be accessed via the MODBUS gateway. You must manually change such assignments. To do this, please observe the following section once detection is complete.
Detecting a PV plant may take several minutes Depending on the number of devices in your PV plant, the detection process may vary in duration. If the data logger does not signal any progress for more than three minutes, cancel the search process. To do so, click the [Cancel] button. Check that all devices are connected properly to your plant and repeat the detection.

5.1 SMA Data Formats and NaN Values
The following sections define the data formats used by SMA, which are 16, 32, and 64 bits wide. The width of a MODBUS register is 16 bits. The registers are transmitted in Motorola format (bigendian), meaning that the high byte is transmitted first and then the low byte. Reading and writing MODBUS registers Background to the MODBUS interface described in this document is that n MODBUS registers must each be read and written in one step. If for example two 16 bit MODBUS registers are read into a 32 bit SMA data format, the 4 bytes of both registers must be read in with a read operation. The SMA data formats are used in the assignment table, in the "Format" column. They describe the data widths and properties of the assigned values. If an assignment is not implemented, NaN or a corresponding numerical value is returned as an error.

8.1 8.2 MODBUS TCP/IP MODBUS Reaction Time
Preset port: 502
This section contains typical reaction times for different inverter series. The reaction time is the interval within which changes in value are available in the SMA devices at the MODBUS interface of the data logger. Consequently, changes in value can only be displayed in a corresponding or larger interval in your MODBUS client system (e.g. in a SCADA system). Device family SCnnnCP and SCnnnHE-20: Reaction time = 8 10 seconds Device family SCnnnUS: Reaction time = 8 10 seconds Device family SCnnnHEUS: Reaction time = 8 10 seconds SCnnnHE-11 (with 1-2 inverters per WebBox): Reaction time = 8 10 seconds String Monitoring Unit: Reaction time = 5 minutes (average value)
