Thermoplastics are the most malleable type of plastics available for use. Most highly flexible
plastics, such as plastic wrap, are types thermoplastic. Other types of thermoplastics are
very hard and can be used for seat coverings, countertops and even safety goggles, but these
are rarer versions. By applying heat thermoplastic can be melted and reused, because unlike
other types of plastic it can shift form and keep its original qualities.

Polymers can occur naturally in the world in the form of rubber
and similar substances, which can then be taken and treated for
specific uses. Polymers can also be created synthetically by
combining chemicals and heating them to make plastics in many colors and a
variety of uses. In essence, a polymer is a chain of simple molecules attached to
one another in a repeating strand. The cycle that the molecules repeat is known
as a mer, and a single unit of the chain is called a monomer. Polymers can come
in many different kinds of chains but the three main families are linear, branched
and network.

Thermoplastics are linear polymers. This means that their chains do not branch
out or interconnect with each other. This does not mean that the chains are all
grouped in straight lines. On the contrary, linear polymers are like long strands of
threads all jumbled together. The threads may not split or connect with each
other, but they still constantly crisscross and double back on themselves. The key
atom of polymer chains is the carbon atom, which can usually form bonds with
four other atoms. Some of the others must also be carbon atoms to keep the
chain going, but many different elements can be part of the chains, especially
hydrogen atoms.

According to Scientific Glass and Plastic, this flexibility allows thermoplastics to
be melted back down and reformed easily. At high temperatures they lose their
form and melt into partial liquid that can be made into different objects.

There are different kinds of thermoplastics each with a different use. Some are
used for packaging plastics or other applications where thin, delicate plastics can
be used. Despite its sensitivity to heat thermoplastic can have other properties
such as strength, resistance to wear and resistance against types of corrosion,
leading to its use in many different manufacturing applications.

The other two main types of plastic are elastomers and thermosets. According to
Transport Information Science, elastomers have branches that interconnect their
polymer chains into a fine webbing and keep their shape very well. Industrial
rubbers are elastomers. Thermosets are highly interconnected chains that double
back on each other in cell-like structures. These are the hard plastics used to
make appliances and electronics.
