CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1

PREAMBLE

Occupational health and safety is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in any occupation. The goal of all occupational health and safety programs is to create safe work environment. As a secondary effect, it also protect co-workers, employees, their families, employers, customers, suppliers, nearby communities, and other members of the public who are impacted by the workplace environment. So to ensure a self-enforcing environment, where assurance of occupational health and safety is the norm rather than an afterthought, a positive, strong infrastructure has to be developed. This necessitates a reorientation not only in the minds of the employers and the government, but also in the attitudes of the employees and the general public. integrated approach is to be adopted to have a healthy and hazard free industrial environment. 1.2 OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY The areas covered under this study are as follows: Present scenario of Industrial Occupational Health and Safety and institutions involved at international level. Occupational health and safety scene in India and institutional mechanism. Indian laws in respect of industrial health and safety. Safety and health practices in Maxtar Biogenics, Baddi. Finding degree of awareness related to health and safety among its employees. Analysis of activities and programs of Maxtar Biogenics for its employees in the field of health and safety. Recommendations of measure to further improve health and safety standards in Maxtar Biogenics. 1.3 METHODOLOGY The study was undertaken in three phases: A desk study of all available material on industrial safety and health management covering the relevant areas, viz., legal, health, economic and labour, was carried out.
