Massive Virus Outbreak Likely Within Five Years

In 30 percent of cases, its fatal. You have likely never heard of the disease, but this tick-borne illness has jumped from animals in Asia and Africa to humansand has claimed its first victim in the UK when a 38-year-old man who contracted the disease in Afghanistan while attending his brothers wedding. However, this isnt the first rare virus to take the life of a Briton in the last few months. Last month, a man from London died after contracting a virus that was similar to the SARS virus that killed 1,000 people in 2003but the virus was unlike anything scientists had discovered to that point. The man died of kidney failure after his organs were ravaged by the disease.

Professor John Oxford of the University of London, an expert on epidemics, has a dire prediction for viruses that jump from animal to human. He stated that within the next five years, a pandemic will hit the world from an animaloriginated virus that will resemble a super-flu. The major concern with these viruses is that they could be airborne pathogens unlike diseases like Ebola that spread through bodily fluids. That means one infected person on an airplane could begin coughing and infect hundreds before anyone knows there is something going on. Professor Oxford says we should plan for [a global outbreak] emerging in 2017-2018.
