FROM THE DIRECTOR

Happy New Year! As we begin the year 2013, we are filled with hope, a sense of renewal, and plans for a successful New Year. Our year will start off with a special book sale sponsored by our Friends of the Library. If youre looking for a bargain, come in to see what we have. You can buy one book and get the second book of equal or less value absolutely free. It is scheduled for Saturday, January 5th from 10:00 until 1:00. Next, Classical Guitarist Jeffrey Bianchi will give a live performance on Friday, January 11th at 2:00 in the afternoon. It also is sponsored by our Friends of the Library and is free to the public. Mr. Bianchi has toured throughout the East Coast and the South and will expand his performances to the West Coast later in 2013. This year we will also introduce our new E-Books offered by Overdrive. We will start setting everything up in January and have everything ready to go live by February. Finally, the last Monday of the month is traditionally the time we set aside for our Friends of the Library Annual Luncheon and Membership Drive. We will all gather at Noon on Monday, January 28th to review our accomplishments from 2012, enjoy delicious food prepared by the best cooks in our County, and elect new officers for 2013. Our special program will be presented by Keisha Vickers, well known gospel singer. We have some great plans for 2013 and we hope you will be an active part of an exciting New Year. As we prepare for a new beginning, we want to say thank you to our Friends of the Library who have done so much for us. There is one group of people that I especially want to recognize and thank: Roberta Hyers, Pat Walker, and the dedicated workers who come each Monday to work in the Book Sale area as they prepare for our various Book Sales. These sales events are major fundraisers for us and require much organization, cooperation, and hard work to prepare. The workers come through for us and work diligently preparing and presenting the Book Sale events. They also list our many books on Amazon.com. Recently I posted $518 in book sales for a two-week period. I also extend a big thank you to Elizabeth Babine for her two years of service to the Friends and the Library. Her term is coming to a close and I commend her for an outstanding job. We are now ready to prepare for a new year and a new beginning. Because you, our patrons, are our most important asset, we must not lose sight of the fact that without you, we would not exist. Therefore, we pledge our service to you and encourage you to make suggestions for ways we can improve our services to our community. We are never too busy to listen to your constructive criticism.

Kolb-Chesser House By Jocelyn Ross-Rayford On April 14, 1978 the Kolb-Chesser House on 417 Broad Street, built circa 1908 in Ozark, was listed on the Alabama Historical Commission Register of Landmarks & Heritage. The house qualified because much of its beauty has been preserved. It is said to have Queen Anne Victorian Neo-Classical elements. Inside the entrance hallway, there is a heart of pine staircase flanked by twostory bays at each end. Their ceilings are twelve feet high. This house on Broad Street was built by Leonidas W. Kolb (1851-1933). He eventually sold it to Sidney Brown. Jennifer Langdale of the New South Associates was funded by the City of Ozark to research and write a document listing Ozarks buildings that would be found eligible to be put on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage by the Alabama Historical Commission. Ms. Langdale prepared the results in a book named Historic Building Survey, Ozark, Dale County Alabama, which was presented to the City of Ozark, at a public meeting in Ozark. That meeting was the citys annual goals conference. The goals committee was formed to answer the questions, Is Ozark an historic town? Can we draw tourists and their money into our area? According to Ms. Langdales report, the intricate details of the beautiful Kolb-Chesser house, such as the beveled leaded glass windows, massive wraparound porch, and the heart of pine staircase, have been preserved as much as possible by its latest owner Dr. Chesser, (a dentist) and his family. They have been living in Ozark since 1971. The original owner of the home, Leonidas William Kolb, made his income as the owner of a furniture store and as an embalmer for the community. Dr. Chesser and his family have tried to preserve the integrity of this house as it was originally built by Mr. Kolb. This house is now one of Dale Countys loveliest landmarks.

From all of the Staff and Board at your Library, we wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Dale County Genealogical & Historical Society The Society will meet Monday, January 7th at 6:00 in the Alice Doughtie Wing of the Library. Our program, Civil War Letters, will be given by Olivia Burden and Beverly Ketcham. Please join us.
