To the people of Newtown

While watching the tragedy at Newtown, Connecticut, unfold this weekend, my husband, John, reminded me that we have a strong link to the people of that state who migrated here after their homes and land were burned by the British during the Civil War. Feeling that our Chamber and the community as a whole, would surely want to do something to show our support to these grieving families, Andy White and I got together and came up with the following cover letter for messages to be written by folks in the community. We just want them to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers. We will have these available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Friday, Dec. 21 and again on Monday, Dec. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Chamber office, 509 Huron St., the Huron Police station and at Cornells Foods. These message sheets will then be collected and sent off to the school administrators in Newtown. Please show your support of these families by sending them a message. Sheila, Chamber of Commerce

St. Peter school donates hundreds of toys to care and share

Around Town Page 2 ---------------Milestones ChurchChat Page 3 ---------------LibraryParks &Recreation Page 4 ---------------Schools Page 5 ---------------Students at St. Peter School participated in the gift of giving this Christmas season by making a donation of toys to Care and Share of Erie County. Each student was asked to bring in one gentlyused toy for distribution to area children in need (many students brought in several items). The result was a collection of hundreds of toys. This is the fourth annual year St. Peter students have participated in this Christmas philanthropy project. This is a true lesson in giving, says Steve Schumm, principal at St. Peter School. Our students enjoy knowing they are making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, especially at Christmas time. The mission of St. Peter School is to foster a Catholic faith community, while providing a safe environment which emphasizes Christian moral values, academic excellence, social awareness, physical development and a cultural appreciation. Care and Share serves residents of Erie County who qualify for assistance under Federal guidelines. It distributes food, clothing, furniture, childrens toys, household goods and more to people in need.

Paying it forward
joyed being able to participate in the drive and contribute some toys herself. Its been nice to give the kids something that will make them happy, said McCann. There are a lot of nice toys this year. I would want them if I was younger. The mission of Teen Leadership Corps is to empower teens to achieve their leadership potential through a character

A big part of being in EHOVEs Teen Leadership Corps is community service. EHOVE students who are part of the program asked their fellow students and EHOVE staff to donate toys for their donation drive. 105 toys were collected and donated to the Toys for Tots program. Early Childhood Education student Rachel McCann (Vermilion HS) en-

Teen Leadership Corps is an elective course that EHOVE seniors can decide to take, but they must be accepted into the class through an application and interview process. They must be a good role model, student leader and abide by the student handbook and class rules at all times.

FROM THE BENCH

By Judge Bill Steuk, Huron Municipal court DRIVE CAREFULLY ON THOSE SLIPPERY ROADS Tis the season for slippery roads. Snow and ice will occur on our roads so drivers need to take precaution. Many accidents occur as a result of an operator of a motor vehicle crashing into the back of a vehicle traveling in the same direction. (the rear-end collision). Many times when police officers investigate this kind of accident, the officer, issues a citation to the driver of the vehicle who rear-ended the other for failing to maintain an assured clear distance ahead or (ACDA). The applicable statute under the Ohio Revised Code is 4511.21(A). It reads as follows: No person shall operate a motor vehicle, trackless trolley, or streetcar at speed greater or less than is reasonable or proper, having due regard to the traffic, surface, and width of the street or highway and any other conditions, and no person shall drive any motor vehicle, trackless trolley or streetcar in and upon any street or highway at a greater speed than will permit the person to bring it to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead. In the case of a rear-end collision, if a driver approaches another vehicle from the rear, the driver must be able to bring the car to a stop to avoid a collision. If a collision does occur, the driver can be charged with ACDA and could be responsible to the other driver for bodily injuries or property damage. It is important to note that an ACDA violation does not necessarily involve whether or not the driver was driving above or below the speed limit. Also, poor weather conditions are not generally a defense to this violation. The statute requires that a driver maintain a distance ahead to stop the vehicle regardless of the conditions or speed of the vehicle. So, a defense that a driver was driving below the speed limit, on the road or that the road conditions were poor might not be a defense to a violation according to the statute. The purpose of the statute is to require all drivers to take these conditions into account to avoid accidents and certainly avoid serious injuries. There are some defenses to an ACDA violation including when a vehicle ahead suddenly changes lanes into the drivers lane and whether the vehicle ahead was discernable. An attorney should be consulted to determine if these defenses are warranted to challenge an ACDA violation. Even if a defense is applicable, a driver could still be liable for an accident for other reasons.

Huron Resident Offers Great Deals at Flooring Store in Sandusky

By liSa yako After 26 years in the flooring business, Huron resident, Matt Kaman, decided to strike out on his own. Actually, Kaman struck out on his own about two years ago in an effort to offer flooring options for commercial customers. Because he had run the commercial division of one of his competitors for 12 years prior to opening his own business, Kaman was uniquely qualified. About eight months ago, he opened a retail store, Discount Flooring & Design, to expand his services and flooring options to residential customers as well. The business has met great success so far. Kaman claims that what makes him stand out above his competitors is his discount pricing. I am always negotiating pricing with the reps to drive the price down for the product, that way my customer gets the best price possible. he stated. Discount Flooring & Design does such a large volume of commercial work that they are able to acquire discounted pricing and pass this on to their customers, both commercial and residential. Kaman guarantees the lowest prices for the same products that might be offered elsewhere. The store carries a variety of carpeting options including Mohawk and Shaw, hardwood and laminate flooring, ceramic tile, and vinyl. They also will provide installation of all the products they carry if so desired, and offer a 10-year guarantee on their products. Generally, customers can expect their new flooring to be installed within two weeks of ordering. The & Design part of the business is the responsibility of Kamans wife, Wendy. If you are having trouble deciding on what type of flooring to choose or what color, Wendy will assist you in making your choices. If your design needs go beyond flooring, she will help you transform a room and will even paint it for you. Discount Flooring & Design is located at 214 East Perkins Avenue (near Drug Mart) in Sandusky. Matt Kaman can be reached at 419271-5916.

Spreading A Little Holiday Cheer

Rather than exchange Christmas gifts amongst themselves, a group of EHOVE Career Center high school staff pooled their funds to donate to two local charities. In total, they donated $325 to Victory Kitchen in Sandusky and $310 to the Salvation Army in Norwalk. It sure feels good to know we are helping folks who are in need this holiday season, said Secretary Linda Hohler, who helped organize the effort.

(L-R) Jenn Feathers, Charles Gibson, Daylon Messenburg, Cory Thompson, Vaughn Doughty, Dylan Drake, Dylan Martin, Michael Klickner, Andrew Gray, Austin Demuth, David Cunningham, Josh Carroll EHOVES CAD/Robotics class recently competed in a robotics competition. Students competed to make robots fight each other while using Fab Lab at EHOVE to make the parts. Five teams of 4-5 EHOVE students designed a robot and competed in Dayton on October 28, 2012 against other schools. A total of 20 schools and 50 teams competed. It took nine weeks to build battlebot. Main rule consisted of students to build a remote control vehicle under 15 pounds designed to take out other robots. Its all about engineering and STEM for the kids. Dylan Drake, Engineering Tech, Margaretta High School attended the event. It was pretty fun, a good learning experience, said Drake, The process of it included documentation and working under strict restrictions of time, specs and budget. We learned wiring and some inventor work like making custom battery holders in the Fab lab at EHOVE. Competition was great, but also a good atmosphere of learning and cooperation. Dylan drove Team 5s robot, which went the farthest in competition by winning three rounds. There will possibly be another competition in the spring. The class is fun and a good one to get involved in.
