The Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria Presents

DEALING WITH PERFORMANCE ANXIETY

A Lecture with Jill Cowan, Psychologist & Hypnotherapist, Director of the Melbourne Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Centre

Overview:
Most of us have to perform every day, whether it be at work, in sport, or getting through a social function. Making a speech, running a meeting, or playing tennis with someone watching can all turn into terrifying experiences. It feels like there is something innate and imperative about performing well. The good news is that there are techniques and strategies that we can use to maximise our performance and minimise the sensation of elephants on our chest. Using a combination of CBT, Mindfulness and Behavioural Techniques, Jillian will outline some alternatives to just getting through it, and present a possible pathway through the whirlpool of emotions and thoughts that interfere with our capacity to become a participator not a spectator.

Jillian Cowan is the Director of the Melbourne Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Centre, and was formerly a Director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. She has been in private practice for over 25 years, and is one of the fortunate people who love what she does. Jillian has extensive training in CBT, and could not believe it when she discovered a therapy modality that fitted so well with her conceptualisation of how a psychologically healthy person thinks, feels and behaves. She is also a registered Hypnotherapist, and Child and Adolescent psychologist. Jillian was formerly a secondary school teacher. She lectures, runs workshops, and writes articles. She is particularly interested in Performance Anxiety and works extensively with clients in the sports and performing arts. She also works with clients who are suffering trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder and procrastination. Jillian enjoys using hypnosis to complement CBT.
