Since 1937, Main Line Art Center has enriched the lives of artists of all ages, levels and abilities, as well as art appreciators, by offering high quality visual arts experiences through classes led by professional Teaching Artists, exhibition opportunities, artistic development and networking opportunities. The mission of Main Line Art Center is to inspire and engage artistic creativity for all ages and abilities and to celebrate and strengthen the essential role of visual art in community life. We are committed to making art accessible to everyone and accomplish this by offering art programs for individuals of all ages and abilities, including a unique series of outreach programs for children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, and by offering $12,000 in need-based scholarships from a restricted endowment to our students each year. More than 16,000 individuals, ages two to senior citizens, participated in our programs last yeareither as artists, students, or enthusiastic viewers.

Demonstrating the most common mosaic techniques direct, in-direct, double direct and reverse, participants will gain the knowledge to expand beyond the simple direct method of mosaic application. We will cover suitable substrate and adhesive combinations for interior and exterior mosaic works factoring in the application method utilized. Overview of installation methods will be covered and finishing tips as time permits. Youll learn what method and why certain approaches are best for a given project and leave with hand outs and material samples.

Join Francine for an in-depth workshop on how to write an effective artists statement. Bring a written list of thoughts and we will construct a statement that communicates how you feel about your work so that you can convey this info to jurors, galleries, collectors and others.

Painting in watercolor is a matter of learning the relationships between paint, water, brush, and time. The only way to understand this is through experience. Join us in a supportive atmosphere to develop and strengthen your artistic judgment and skills to make paintings that are convincing and interesting.

Class provides a continuation for students who took Drawing for the Artist but is open to new students.

Learn to use this versatile and forgiving medium. Colors range from soft and subtle to bold and brilliant, and can be layered to produce luminous surfaces. We will work from still life and the introduction of various techniques: from open strokes that create a variety of textures to blended finishes. Learn to create strong compositions, fine tune your perception and use this medium to it maximum potential. Many famous artists like Renoir, Mary Cassat, and Bonnard used pastels as finished work rather than preliminary sketches. Learn from demos and individual guidance in a supportive atmosphere.

For those interested in the medium, technique, eastern lyric, culture, and philosophy of this classical art form. Exploration will include basic brushwork, familiarity with the texture of Shuan paper, applying ink and color as well as fundamental composition. Pastels offer an enormous range of color and texture, and this class will explore the different types of soft pastel and paper surfaces that allow for such variety. Class will begin with a demo or a short talk. Focus will be on accurate information and basic principles of good drawing, values, edges and color. Experiment with new techniques and supplies to enhance your watercolor experience, or renew your interest with a new approach. We will work with interference and pearlescent paints, and watercolor pencils and sticks. Each participant will get to try painting on a variety of papers and on a gesso and gel textured underpainting. Please see the supply list for required materials. Energize your work with creative techniques, and engage in new possibilities to achieve an abstract language with this forgiving medium. Examples from contemporary and modern art will be used to enhance understanding and development of each students artistic voice. The instructor will use pastels, but students may use any medium. An opportunity for artists at all levels to work independently to maintain or improve their life drawing skills in a variety of techniques and 2-D media. The typical open studio period explores a variety of poses with a nude model, beginning with a warm up of short gestural poses, and then progressing into longer held poses. Looking for something fun and creative for your kids this upcoming holiday break? Make their break count with Holiday Art Camp! Young artists will craft unique works of art, make new friends and participate in the creative process. Small classes taught by professional Teaching Artists allow for individualized attention and exposure to a wide range of age-appropriate materials, including printmaking, collage, sculpture, drawing and painting. Tuition includes all materials.

Join us to try a class and get acquainted with the Art Center. New students will have the opportunity to meet our teachers, check out the facilities and participate in a creative project. This event is free of charge, but advanced registration is required, as space is limited.

Payment Options We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Enrollment is accepted after FULL tuition is received. Read course descriptions carefully for dates, times, and required supplies. The Art Center only sends confirmation after online registration. Students registering all other ways should assume registration acceptance unless otherwise notified. The Art Center may decline an individuals request to enroll in classes or participate in programs when necessary. Supply Lists It is the students responsibility to download supply lists from the Art Centers website (if applicable) or request a copy at the front desk. Early Registration Discount Students registering through Dec. 17 will receive a discount of $10 off their total registration fee (not valid for Holiday Camp). Only one early registration discount can be used per household, per semester. Additional Class Discount Students who register for more than one class (of 4 weeks or more) will receive $10 off of each additional class thereafter. Students who register for more than one workshop (of 3 weeks or less) will receive $5 off each additional workshop thereafter. Offer only applies when registering for multiple programs in the same transaction. Discount not applicable for Family Workshops or Camps. As noted larger discounts are sometimes given for specific class combinations, in which case students will only receive the greater discount. Family smART Packs Family smART Packs may be purchased in person or via phone only (not online), can only be used for designated smART Family Workshops, and are non-refundable if not used within a year. Attendees do not need to select the workshops they will attend at the point of purchase, however advanced registration is strongly encouraged. Drop-ins are welcome based on availability. Class Cancellations and Make-ups The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment or in case of a catastrophe. If we cancel a class, students will be notified and full tuition and will be refunded. Cancellations are normally made 5 days prior to start of class or workshop. Refunds and make-ups will not be given for student absences due to personal schedule conflicts. The Art Center reserves the right to hire a substitute teacher when necessary. *UPDATED!* Withdrawal/Refund Policy Memberships are nonrefundable. Trip deposits are nonrefundable unless the Art Center cancels the trip.

Switching Classes & Joining Classes Late Students are permitted to switch from one class/workshop to another within a given semester if they do not wish to continue with their current program. In this case, the above withdrawal fees will be waived. With the instructors permission, students may join a class that has already started and the tuition will be prorated. Scholarships Scholarships are available based on financial need. Contact the office for an application or download one from the website. The deadline for applications is Dec. 17 after which applications will be viewed collectively. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered on a first come, first serve basis until funds are dispersed. For more info, see the policies on the application form.

Publicity Policy We reserve the right to use photos taken our programs for publicity purposes. Registration in a class gives the Art Center permission to use images without further consent or compensation. From time to time, the Art Center shares its mailing list with partner organizations so that students can receive info about related activities. Students may opt out of this list by emailing info@mainlineart.org. Student Property The Art Center is not responsible for artwork and other property left on the premises and has no liability if such property is lost, stolen or damaged, except in instances when artwork is displayed in gallery exhibitions and covered by insurance. Artwork or property left two weeks after the semester ends will be discarded.

Classes: #1204; Evening Classes: #2204. Whenever possible, the Art Center will post cancellations on our homepage, Facebook page, and if possible, will record a new voicemail. However, students should always consult KYW for closures. In the event of a weather-related closing, make-ups will be scheduled the week after your class ends, unless otherwise notified. Refunds cannot be made if a student is unable to attend the make-up class. For classes happening off site at one of our community partners, contact the organization directly to see if the class is still running.
Emergency Forms Every child under the age of 18 is required to have a current Child Emergency Form on file with the office. Adult students are required to inform the office if they have a medical condition that the staff or faculty should be aware of in an emergency. Forms are kept on file for one year unless there are updates or changes. Contact the office for a form, or download one on the Childrens Education page of the website.
