2 HIRF High Intensity Radiated Fields are produced in a number of ways ; By the operation of airborne equipment fitted to the aircraft By interruptions of current in aircraft systems By the high currents induced when a lightning strike occurs High powered radio / radar signals striking the aircraft Equipment malfunction and systems operating without input is perceived by the pilot as indications of HIRF penetration. Available Protection The operation of airborne equipment and interruptions of current are dealt with by the use of interference suppressors and shielded compartments. High powered radar and lightning strike impacts are curbed by efficient screening and electrical bonding. Conducting type nose wheels and static wicks. Inspection and Checks The inspections will be concentrated on the electrical bonding system, static dischargers and built in shielding systems. Always refer the approved maintenance manual. A fully functional check of all radio, radar, instruments, compass and electrical circuits should be carried out. Complete detailed checks will be found in the relevant Aircraft Maintenance Manual. The aircraft may also require a calibration compass swing to check for any changes to its magnetic field. Precautions Always use appropriate PPE ( Personal Protection Equipment ) In an event of HIRF penetration, all unnecessary electronic devices should be switched off. Documentation Enter all relevant information in the aircraft tech log with details of causes, inspections, observations and repairs performed if any.
