DIVINE LITURGY

OF

ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM- NATIVITY OF CHRIST

The Great Doxology

THE BELLS ARE RUNG AND ALL THE LIGHTS ARE SWITCHED ON MARKING THE END OF MATINS AND THE BEGINNING OF THE DIVINE LITURGY.

Burn up the thorns of all my offences; Purify my soul; Sanctify my mind; make
strong my knees and my bones; Enlighten the simplicity of my five senses; nail down the whole of me with Thy Fear. Always Protect, Guard and Watch over me, and keep me from every souldestroying deed and word. Sanctify and Purify and order me; make me clean, give me Understanding and Enlighten me; make me worthy to be the habitation of the Only Holy Spirit, and no longer a habitation of sin; so that as Thine Abode from the Entrance of Thy Holy Communion, every evil deed and passion may flee from me like fire. As supplicants I bring to Thee all those whom Thou hast Sanctified: the Leaders of the Angelic Powers; Thy Forerunner; Thine Enlightened Apostles; and further, Thy Pure and Spotless Mother. Receive the Prayers of these, O Merciful Christ, and make Thy slave a Child of Light. For Thou art our Sanctification and our only Good, and the Illumination of our souls, and unto Thee as our God and Master each day as is fitting, we ascribe all Glory, Honour and Worship. Amen

For behold: through the Cross Joy has come to all the world. Blessing the Lord always, let us praise His Resurrection. For enduring the Cross for us, He destroyed Death by Death. Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem, for the Glory of the Lord has Risen upon Thee, celebrate now and be glad, O Zion. And do Thou, O Pure Mother of God, rejoice in the rising of Thy Child. O Divine! O Beloved! O Sweetness of Thy Voice! For Thou, O Christ, hast truly proised to be with us until the end of time. Wherefore, we, the Faithful rejoice, holding these Thy Wrds as an Anchor of Hope. O Christ, O Great and Most Sacred Passover! O Wisdom, and Word of God, and Power! Grant that we may more truly have Communion with Thee in the Day of Thy Kingdom, which knows no Eventide. Christ, the Son of the Living God, Who came into the world to Save sinners, of whom I am the first. Also I believe, that This is Thy Sacred Body, and This Thy Precious Blood. Therefore I pray to Thee: have mercy on me and pardon all my transgressions - voluntary and involuntary, in word, deed and thought, both known and unknown - and make me worthy to partake of Thy Sacred Mysteries, for the Remission of sins and for Life Eternal. Amen. BEHOLD, I APPROACH FOR HOLY COMMUNION. O Creator, burn me not as I partake; for Thou art Fire, which burns the unworthy. Wherefore, Cleanse me from every stain. RECEIVE ME TODAY, O SON OF GOD, as a Partaker of Thy Mystical Feast; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Thine enemies; I will not kiss Thee as did Judas, but as the Thief, I will confess Thee: Lord, remember me in Thy Kingdom! TREMBLE, O MORTAL, BEHOLDING THE DIVINE BLOOD. For it is like a lit coal - burning the unworthy. It is Gods Body and Deifies and Nourishes me. It Deifies my soul, and wondrously Nourishes my mind. THOU HAS SMITTEN ME WITH YEARNING, O CHRIST, and with Thy Divine Love Thou has changed me; but burn away with Spiritual Fire my sins, and make me worthy to be filled with the Joy of Thee; so that rejoicing in Thy Goodness, I may magnify Thy Two Presences. INTO THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THY SAINTS, HOW SHALL I, THE UNWORTHY, ENTER? For should I dare to enter the Festal Chamber, my Robe betrays me, for it is not a Festal Garment, and I shall be bound and cast out by the Angels. Cleanse my soul, O Lord, from pollution, and by Thy Compassion Save me.

Forgive us all our transgressions - voluntary and involuntary. Sanctify our souls and bodies - and grant that we may worship Thee in Holiness all the days of our life, through the Intercessions of the Holy Theotokos and all the Saints, who from the beginning of time have pleased Thee; for Thou, our God, art Holy, and to Thee we ascribe Glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. We thank Thee, O King Invisible, Who by Thine Infinite Power has created all things, and by the fullness of Thy Mercy has brought forth all things out of nothing into being; do Thou Thyself, O Master, look down from Heaven upon those, who have bowed their heads before Thee; for they have not bowed before flesh and blood but before Thee, our Almighty God. Therefore, grant, O Master, that these Thy Gifts may be for each of us beneficial for each according to the special need of each of us. Sail with those who sail, accompany those who travel. Brethren: when the fullness of the time

had come, God sent forth His Son, Born of a woman, Born under the Law, to Redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might receive the Adoption as sons.

Remember, O Lord, this city in which we dwell, and every city and land, and the faithful living in them. Remember, O Lord, those who travel by land, by sea and by air; the sick, the suffering, the captives, and their Salvation. Remember, O Lord, those who serve and bring forth fruit in Thy Holy Churches, and those who remember the poor; and upon all of us, send forth Thy Mercies...

Implant in us also the fear of Thy Blessed Commandments, so that trampling down all desires of the flesh, we may enter upon a Spiritual Manner of living, both thinking and doing the things that are well-pleasing to Thee; for Thou art the Illumination of our souls and bodies, O Christ our God, and to Thee we ascribe glory together with Thine Eternal Father, and Thine All Holy Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. they told him: "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the Prophet: But you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel." Herod, when he had secretly called the Wise Men, determined from them what time the Star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem saying: "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, so that I may come and worship Him also." they heard the King, they departed; and behold, the Star that they had seen in the East went before them, until it came and stood over where the young Child was. they saw the Star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great Joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His Mother, and fell down and worshipped Him.

Thou has brought us from nothingness into being, and when we fell away Thou raised us up again, and Thou does not cease until Thou has done everything to bring us to Heaven, and grant us Thy Kingdom to come. For all these things we thank Thee, and Thine Only Begotten Son, and Thy Holy Spirit; for the visible and invisible Bounties, which have been bestowed upon us. We thank Thee also for this Liturgy, which Thou deigns to receive from our hands, even though Thou art surrounded by thousands of Archangels and myriads of Angels, by the Cherubim and Seraphim, which are six-winged, many-eyed and soar aloft on their wings ...

PEOPLE PRIEST

No one who is bound with the desires and pleasures of the flesh is worthy to approach, or draw near, or to serve Thee, O King of Glory; for to serve Thee is great and awesome, even to the Heavenly Powers. Yet, through Thine ineffable and boundless Love towards mankind, Thou unchangeably and immutably became Man, and served as our High Priest, and as Lord of All, has committed to us the celebration of this Liturgical and bloodless Sacrifice. For Thou alone, O Lord our God, rules over all things in Heaven and Earth, Who art borne upon the Throne of the Cherubim, Who art the Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel, Who alone art Holy and rest amongst Thy Saints. Wherefore, I implore Thee, Who alone art Good, and ready to listen: Look down upon me, Thy sinful and unprofitable servant, and cleanse my soul and my heart from an evil conscience; and enable me by the Power of Thy Holy Spirit, Vested with the Grace of the Priesthood, to stand before this, Thy Holy Altar, and Consecrate Thy Holy and Immaculate Body and Precious Blood. For to Thee I come, having bowed my head, and beseech Thee: Turn not Thy Face away from me, nor reject me from among Thy Children; but make me worthy, Thy sinful and unworthy servant, to offer these Gifts to Thee. For Thou art the Offerer and the Offered, the Accepted and the Distributed, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thine Eternal Father, and Thine All Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit; now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer of Offering
O Lord, God Almighty, Who alone art Holy; Who receives the Sacrifice of Praise from those who call upon Thee with all their heart, receive also the Supplication of us sinners, and accept it at Thy Holy Altar, and enable us to offer to Thee Gifts and Spiritual Sacrifices, for our sins and for the omissions of the people; and make us worthy to find Grace in Thy Sight, so that our sacrifice may be well pleasing to Thee, and that the Good Spirit of Thy Grace may dwell upon us, and upon these Gifts presented here, and upon all Thy people. Through the Compassion of Thine Only Begotten Son, with Whom Thou art Blessed; together with Thine All Holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and forever, unto the Ages of Ages. Amen.
