Thu 20 DEC
The self-confessed motley collection of musical
amigos hell-bent on a good time, the Corporate
Voice Experience is making your Christmas one to
remember. On the eve of the day the world is due
to end, make your fnal hours on earth count and
celebrate the bands eighth birthday.
Do you know whats better than a single this summer?
A combo package. Two of New Zealands fnest
musical roots/R&B acts team up and hit the road.
Straight out of the Waikato, Katchafre have been at
the forefront of Kiwi reggae for some 10 years, while
Ladi6 is our homegrown soul diva.
Im not sure if the bands name is trying to tell us
something on the worlds end, but lets be honest,
these guys have never been one to shy away from
controversy. Formed in California during the 80s,
outspoken vocalist Mike Muir has led the group
through almost 30 years of all kinds of metal.
Not content for one band to hog all the Christmas
party glory, Auckland pub The Kings Arms has put
together a bill flled with some of the best local music,
with many no strangers to the KA stage. As they
say, what better way to celebrate the birth of Jesus?
Guests include Voom, Shes So Rad and Three Bees.
Just like your suitcase back from a shopping spree
in Sydney, this show is jam packed with musicians.
Starring Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams, Bernie
Griffen, The Bads, Bannerman, Great North, Farah
Loux, Bat Country, Bond Street Bridge and Callum
Gentleman.
Hmm, do you think Kora and The Nudge got wind of
what the aforementioned groups had planned? It
looks like double acts are the name of the game this
summer! Kora is always synonymous with the word
party. A natural companion, The Nudges soul infected,
psychedelic and bluesy sound is the perfect ft.
Ever been to a Feelers gig? Ive seen them entertain
the smallest crowd to a jam- packed stadium and
still bring the same energy and intensity to every
show. Youll know every hit, which is great, and theyll
always be room to get the lighters out for their more
mellow tracks.
Why look at the 21st as the end of the world? Why
not look at it as an age of spiritual transformation
marking the dawning of an era. With a name like So
So Modern, these guys know their stuff when it comes
to current and up-to-date sounds, so usher in the new
beginning the right way.
The title says it all and the organisers behind the
aptly-titled event thought why not end the world
going out with a bang construct a different kind of
misery. The show welcomes Metal Tower, Intergracia,
Blacktooth and The Fat Controller from around the
country to say sayonara to the world as we know it?

Rhombus and The Black Seeds to name a few, provide

MCing, a punching horn section, heavy bass lines and
uplifting songs.

what better way to keep the high alive than go on a
summer tour? They are a killer live act, with unrivalled
energy guaranteed to get the party started.

Oooh, La de da, what makes your festival so great?
Well, maybe its because it boasts some of the
biggest names in international hip-hop, featuring the
legendary De La Soul and The Beatnuts from the US.
Dont forget the electronic stage and a whole lot of
Kiwi acts to round out a great festival!
It wouldnt be summer without Shihad turning up
somewhere. Jetting over from across the ditch, as well
as playing a few festivals along the way, the rockers
are also headlining their own tour to do things their
way. Recently releasing a greatest hits album, they
have frmly cemented themselves as Kiwi icons.
Its all about reggae, reggae, reggae with the
successful Bay of Plenty event back for its second
year. Its all about keeping it local, with 19 bands and
six DJs from right here in the heart of Aotearoa. This
year, the legendary Herbs, a household name in New
Zealand, make their frst appearance at Exodus
After the success of the inaugural Northern Bass at
Haruru Falls that saw thousands in attendance, the
organisers were fooded with demands to do it again.
Theres a selection of quality acts, where true bass
music connoisseurs have a place and event to suit
their needs.
You saw her on New Zealands Got Talent and she
was a huge hit with the judges. With a unique style,
sound and defnitely a look of her own, Mihirangi
didnt make it to the fnals, but she certainly left an
impression, with tours and shows lined up into 2013.
Check her out for yourself.
The Melbourne-based, Kiwi-manned/womanned
collective have played New Zealand numerous
times to increasing audiences and a wave of critical
acclaim. The Summer Stomp show sees King Cannons
choosing their favourite new bands as support their
headline performance.
Songwriter and guitarist Ruban Nielson mixes the
psychedelia with sharp soul touchstones in his new
group UMO. The group is riding on the high off recent
tours with Grizzly Bear and Weezer, as well as fnalist
positions the categories of Best Male Solo Artist and
Best Alternative Album at the Music Awards.
Still going after emerging on the scene in the 90s,
they Cant Get Enough of performing live shows.
Responsible for popular (and infectiously catchy)
anthems Scorpio Girls and Sitting Inside My Head,
its a show that will have you not only thrashing your
head from side to side, but also singing along.
The mighty Channel One Sound System bless
Wellington for the very frst time. Run by legendary
selector Mikey Dread and mic chanter Ras Kayleb,
and running for over 30 years at Londons Notting Hill
Carnival, Channel One have built a massive following
and gained respect as the leaders in roots and culture.
Metal fends rejoice! This is your destination for New
Year Eve activities. This year, the line-up has 20 bands
and two stages running this year, not to mention live
fesh hook suspension from the Skin Puppets, more
stalls, giveaways and activities, zombie go-go girls and
a huge range of food and beverages.

Name one thing aside from Finnish people that
comes out of Finland? Nightwish! The group brings
their dramatic sound to New Zealand for the frst
time equal parts epic metal and Gothic symphony.
Their combination of seductive, emotional vocals and
gallant guitar melodies are like a dark embrace.
Dunedin psych-pop quartet Alizarin Lizard will release
their second full-length album in February and in the
lead up to that glorious release date, the group wants
to share their new track with you! There will be two
singles released for the tour, which will each contain
a nice unique bundle of audio and visual goodies.
Animal Collective, one of the pioneers of experimental
music, is set to return to New Zealand for a one-off
Auckland show. The innovative electro-quartet have
released a new album Centipede Hz, following their
breakthrough album Merriweather Post Pavilion,
which saw them tour here back in 2009.
Their debut album Boys & Girls has been called one of
the best albums of 2012 by critics everywhere. From
the heart-rending title song to such stomps as Rise to
the Sun, the album demonstrates the sense of groove
and space. The quirky foursome will make you shake,
rattle and roll to the beat.
A band of horses may not be what you need you
probably use a car to get around. Known as the band
with an impressive set of beards, they are stopping
off on their way to Australians Big Day Out festival
to showcase their latest album, Mirage Rock. Its
got a beautiful country lilt to it and a harmony of
Americana.
You seriously do not want to miss this the Toronto
duo only just made it here for the 2011 Big Day Out,
but Alice Glasss broken foot severely curtailed the
antics of a band with a reputation for a ferocious live
show. This time you can guarantee shell be holding
nothing back, so youll want to be there.
Be prepared to get covered in Blood Sugar Sex Magik
metaphorically when the Grammy award-winners
rock Vector until the speakers blow. Yeah, they have
nearly 30 years on the clock, but they are showing no
signs of slowing, always jumping around the stage
like a 20-year-old on crack. You know the hits, so what
are you waiting for?
Heinekens Baseline Afterparty is the ultimate fnale
to the Heineken Open 2013. Its a fxture on Januarys
social calendar for those who love to party in a fancy
environment. Experience the incredible atmosphere of
the Tennis Dome! Ladi6 joined by Kiwi hip-hop heavy
weight David Dallas, electro-pop princess, Ruby Frost.

Once known as the other half of Ricky Gervais work,
Stephen Merchant is actually a ridiculously funny
comedian in his own right. His show, Hello Ladies, is
a self-deprecating look at his journey to meet women
and his struggle with singledom. His quiet charm will
catch you off-guard and have you laughing your ass off.
A glittering fairytale pantomime with dazzling
costumes and lots of fun and laughter, Cinderella
has it all. Starring a fabulous Fairy Godmother, two
hilarious dames the sensational Ugly Sisters a
sweet Cinders, reluctant Prince Charming, a pumpkin
coach and a happy-ever-after ending.
Ever wanted to feel like you are walking among the
stars? Well, now you cansort of. Stroll along the one
kilometer light trail of 500,000 sparkling lights that
envelope lake-side walkways. Meander under fairylit
trees and enjoy the trail of more than 40 different light
animations and installments made by local artists.
When hearing the story of Jesus birth, have you ever
wondered about the star of Bethlehem that led the
Three Wise Men? Astronomers have, and they have put
forward some possible scientifc explanations for the
stars appearance. Hear these astronomical theories
explained and discussed.
We take it for granted in the digital age, but the
common photo is a reality-bending piece of artwork
in its own right. The works in this exhibition illustrate
the photographers desire to explore aspects of light,
space, scale, automatism, symbolism and turning an
indexical medium to near abstract.
See another side of Kiwi band Fat Freddys drop go
behind-the-scenes of their 2005 tour. Photographer
Ans Westra was approached by the group to take their
publicity stills, but as it turned out the snaps became
more than just a media sell they were a beautiful
look at Aotearoa life on the road.

Ironically, in one of the best places to head for
summer, surf and sand on the beach, the city of
Tauranga is bringing a touch of winter cool in the
form of ice skating. I guess they missed the memo on
the change of seasons? So if the heat is getting a bit
much, cool down with a relaxing skate around the

The gamingindusTry has been growing at a tremendous rate over
the past few years, snowballing to become the most lucrative sector in
the entertainment business.
James Camerons Avatar (widely hailed as one of the most successful
flms of all time) reached the one billion dollar mark a whole two days
behind activisions FPs Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the fastest selling game
to date.
The mmOrPgWorld of Warcraft has garnered over $10 billion usd in its
tenure, generating more revenue per year than the gdP of several small
countries. suffce to say, there are many of those who will practically
hemorrhage money to get their hands on these games and keep those
hands occupied.
The reasons for the surge in popularity are manifold. gaming itself has
come a very long way since the advent of Pong in 1972, maturing both as
a formof entertainment and as a vehicle for storytelling. games such
as Gran Turismo 5 portray a surreal level of visual accuracy, whereas
landmark titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics boast a plot to rival the
complexity of imperial rome.
Where theres a shift in demand, game makers respond accordingly:
many games are now adaptable to be played on the go, with android and
iOs titles such as angry Birds becoming ubiquitous on most cellular
devices. Forty-seven percent of players are now female and games have
subsequently branched out to the realms of dancing, singing and ftness.
gamings boomhas also had a rather salient cultural impact on the
past few generations. despite the assumption that video games are
territory of youth, the average gamer is in fact 30 years old and has
been playing for 12 years (according to the entertainment software
associations fndings). Trinley dorje one of the spiritual leaders of
Tibetan Buddhism is an outspoken advocate for virtual entertainment.
Video war games satiate my feelings of aggression, voices the current
Karmapa Lama. Permeating all but most aspects of modern society,
gaming is without a doubt here to stay.
Te Papa will be showcasing a vast array of noteworthy games across the
generations four decades in fact. FromSpace Invaders to Fruit Ninja,
Game Masters will showcase more than 100 games, handpicked from
some of the most notable designers in the industry. Paying homage to
the origins of this phenomenon, the curators have sourced and restored
old-school, original arcade machines for you to play Asteroids on, only to
marvel at how far weve come with a go later on at Blizzards StarCraft II.
This is an event that youll want to bring your friends and family to, as
theres a little something for every persuasion. alongside the games,
there will be various revealing interviews on display and an array of rare
artwork to enhance the depth of this full experience. Whether youre
facing off with Real Racing 2 or jamming together on Rock Band, theres
oodles of fun to be had. To sumit up in their own words, Game Masters
brings the evolution and artistry of video games to your fngertips.
This is one exhibition you dont want to miss.

featuring some of Kiwi musics heavyweights, in the best outdoor
settings the area has to offer.
The series, now in its 20th year, covers a wide range of musical genres
including rock, country western, opera, hip hop, reggae and more. Well-
known artists include London-based rockers i amgiant, avalanche
City, adeaze, sola rosa and Tahuna Breaks, as well as up and coming
talent including ukulele supergroup The nukes.
enthusiasts can browse the music in Parks site to see whos playing

discovered. Fans can check out the full schedule for auckland Councils
music in Parks 2013 series now on musicinparks.co.nz.
The site itself is mobile-friendly so users on the go can easily browse
information, with links to Twitter and Facebook for social sharing.
Photos fromevents will be shared on the music in Parks Facebook page,
and fans are encouraged to share pictures.
i amgiant, which features Kiwi musicians shelton Woolright (formerly
of Blindspott) and Paul matthews (fromstylus and Tadpole), is playing
in the Parks as the only free gig on their 2013 tour.
Bassist Paul matthews says, some of us grew up right here in auckland
and its great to come home to feature in one of the countrys best free
concert series. Well be bringing our a-game and cant wait to hang out
with all our local fans.
mayor Len Brown says music in Parks is a much-anticipated and well-
loved summer fxture.
imthrilled that this free programme of events now stretches from
Franklin to rodney, bringing even more concerts and more music genres
to aucklanders, and giving our homegrown talent a great showcase in
some fantastic settings.

Its east meets west in a Parisian-inspired bohemian
parlor with hints of an Asian opium den. This fne
establishment has an international handpicked wine
list, one of the largest selection of spirits in Auckland,
craft beers from some of NZs best breweries and a
delicious fusion-style food menu that is ever evolving.
In the heart of Dunedins restaurant scene, this
welcoming venue is home to live music, a few sports
activities. Its got the makings of a pub, with the
upmarket feel of a leisurely caf. Plus with Monteiths
on hand, you cant go wrong.

My phone conversation with Bill reynolds, bassist and
producer with south carolinas Band of horses, must be one of the most
congenial to date. over the phone, at least, hes one of the nicest, most
charming guys ive ever met.
Briefy known as just horses, Boh get classifed as rock, but theyre
really more roots and country. think 1970s John Denver, but far cooler.
Formed in 2004 in seattle by Ben Bridwell, theyve released three
studio efforts, including 2010s Grammy-nominated infnite arms .the
bands line up, which included Mat Brooke for their debut album, has
undergone several changes although the current members (Bridwell,
ryan Monroe, tyler ramsey, creighton Barrett and reynolds) have all
been with the band for several years.
the band struck gold when the track the Funeral from their debut
Everything All The Time got picked up by the networks for a number of
series, flms, video games and even advertisements. plus an appearance
on the Late show with David Letterman in 2006 didnt hurt either.
By then, Brooke had left to form Grand archives. reynolds remembers that
Brooke was pivotal to getting a show opening for iron & Wine in seattle.
Ben asked if [Brooke] would just come up and do a couple songs, just
cause were friends. so he did that. it was fun and then a couple of iron
& Wine tours came up. then next thing were in the studio recording for
[label] sub pop.
roll on to today and reynolds is talking to me about the bands fourth
studio album, scheduled for release this month, produced by Glyn Johns.
Mirage Rocks lead track Knock Knock bounds along like a steam train
and reveals inspirations gleaned from recent tours with Willie nelson,
Jamey Johnson and John reilly.
the railroad revival tour was a one-of-a-kind Us train tour travelling
on 16 vintage, 1940s railcars with open air and pop-up concert venues in
parks around the tracks where they stopped.
its like being on your own train set, laughs reynolds. it was a cool
way to tour and way better than those seedy bars and stuff weve done
in the past. it suited us too because we cant deny our leanings towards
roots and country, style music.

asiDe FroM a special Big Day out edition of II, fans have had little
new material to listen to. after hearing III it is clear this drought was due
to the enormous amount of work that alice Glass and ethan Kath have
put into transforming their sound for their third full-length release.
recorded predominantly in Berlin and Warsaw, the canadian duo
placed themselves in unfamiliar territory in an attempt to reach a new
creative space. Kath wanted to offer listeners a completely different and
new experience and achieved this by stepping up to being the albums
sole producer and experimenting with new methods of production.
he introduced european electro infuences and strong pulsating synth
sounds into the mix, adding structure and cohesion.
the albums strong political undertone is evidence of signifcant changes
in the pairs lives since IIs release in 2010. With oppression being an
obvious theme, Glass says she has witnessed bad things happening to
good people, realising there will never be justice for them. her writing
style is impacted with helplessness and desperation, setting it apart
from her previous lyrics, while also complimenting Kaths new rawer
compositions.
i didnt think i could lose faith in humanity any more than i already
had, Glass comments, but after witnessing some things, it feels like
the world is a dystopia where victims dont get justice and corruption
prevails.
hype for their upcoming show here in new Zealand has grown since the
July leak of IIIs frst single plague and anticipation has increased since
Wrath of God dropped in september. Fans were left hungry for more
following the release of a third single, affection, in late october.
the duo have been slipping new tracks into their european shows,
creating lots of excitement and now that III is out it appears that fans
have much to look forward to. hopefully, we will also get a glimpse into
what to expect from the ever-evolving crystal castles in the future.

yoUre FroM neW ZeaLanD, eh? its a small place everyone
knows each other, notes alabama shakes drummer steve Johnson.
athens, where i am now, its small. its about 25,000 in population. its
mainly cotton farming. its a Walmart town with nothing, but a mall
and a few shops on the main street. the railroad goes right through the
centre of town like those old movies. two types of beer: Miller and Lite.
the towns all pleasantville big porches, wealthy nasa engineers from
the centre down yonder. not a lot for young folks to do here.
the story goes that the band began in that Walmart town athens ,
alabama in a high school psychology class. vocalist Brittany howard,
whos been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, approached guitarist
Zac cockrell and asked if they wanted to start playing music together.
i knew about Brittany and Zac for a while. they played parties and
hung around the music shop i worked in, explains Johnson. all the
bands did. thats where they recruited and sucked up the culture. i was
playing in a punk band. Brittany and Zac opened for a show we did in a
garage. her voice was amazing, even when i saw her at age 16.
Fogg later helped out on their self-titled debut ep. it must have made an
impression because later after Fogg graduated from college and retuned
to athens, he and Johnson joined the band. our frst real jam became
the song Mama. it had potential. it was the start of this vibrant fusion
of swampy south rock, blues and soul, says Johnson.
even in nashville, which is a music town, its hard to catch a break.
you do a lot of places where you play to a bunch of drinkers. the
town revolves around country and not much else. We even played an
aquarium, which was unusual.
Getting desperate were they? nah, not as bad as those gigs the [Flight of
the conchords] were doing on that tv show, Johnson adds, delighted
when he fnds out im from Wellington.
Do you know Bret and Jemaine? he asks excitedly.
a high-profle blogger Justin Gage (aquariumDrunkard.com) took a
shine to the newly-recorded track you aint alone. he called it a slice
of the real and then all hell broke loose.
the next thing the guys from Drive-By truckers have a copy and
theyre, like, come on the road with us! recalls Johnson.
From there, alabama shakes went from obscurity to playing the
ryman auditorium in nashville, appearing on Later with Jools Holland,
headlining the isle of Wight Festival with the XX, and a nomination for
a mtvU Woodie for Best Live performance.
yeah, its a great ride for some home country boys and girls, says
Johnson. hey, did you say you knew rhys Darby? i love those guys. you
must be neighbours?

ALBUM OUT NOW: GIRLS & BOYS
hoW Do yoU keep experimental music experimental after 13 years
and over eight albums? that was the challenge for Baltimore psychedelic
rock act animal collective.
in a time of robots having sex (dubstep) and Lady Gaga wearing a meat
dress, it seems perhaps the modern age has lost its edge of difference. But
according to founding member Josh Dibb, for them its not about keeping
it experimental so much as it is keeping it animal collective and on the
new record Centipede Hz (or Centipede Hertz) they have tried to do just that.
i like the idea that people listening to it over time will be challenged in
all these different ways, sonically, in terms of what they are listening to,
but they will still be able to start to hear the unifyingness of it, thats its
distinctly animal collective.
Beginning in the early 1990s as a bunch of childhood friends, avey tare
(David portner), panda Bear (noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and
Geologist (Brian Weitz) began in indie bands and alternative rock groups
in their county, living in a bubble separated from the Baltimore music
the line up of the band has never been uniform when recording or
playing, always keeping the ideas and combinations fresh. Josh says its
a real balancing act to keep their mantra of what they set out to do in the
frst place: create a band that does not feel like something is wrong if
one or two of us do no feel like being involved.
example a: Joshs favourite album, Merriweather Post Pavilion (2008) took
form without him and Centipede is the frst record he has had his own
song on. so has being here this time shaped the album and pushed it into
a particular direction?
i think that was just a new thing for the band to try to work on one of
my songs, he says. But i do not really know what i could say about it
beyond that. i was psyched to be doing another record and i think we
all were. i do not think i can really take credit for it, but the goal was just
sort of make a record that felt more physical, raw and visceral than the
last one was.
one of the ways animal collective have sought to shake things up on this
album is by signifcantly reduced the number of instruments used, yet
giving the illusion that there are more. the juxtaposition of the minimalist
instrumentation with the tracks rich sound worked to create an effect
fans have dubbed a refection of the experience of living in modern age
something that Josh acknowledges was in the back of their mind.
We defnitely didnt talk about it when we were writing it, but i think
having heard from people now it is pretty easy to be like, yeah, that
probably makes sense in terms of giving a feeling of century overload.
i feel [overwhelmed by the modern age], especially around even really
simple things, like having so much media at our disposal all the time.

it aLL happeneD so suddenly. one minute, the Mint chicks
founded by brothers Kody and ruban nielson were taking the charts
by storm. their debut album Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! spawned infectious
hits, and received critical acclaim.
But no sooner had they established themselves they were gone. shortly
after the release of their Bad Buzz ep, the band played their fnal show
in 2010 after Kody infamously destroyed two drumkits and equipment,
telling the crowd to start your own fucking band.
i just left, singer and guitarist ruban says of the band break up. i had
to get out of the whole situation. too much negativity in the band and
new Zealand in general. i got to portland and started making a new life
for myself.
his departure was the frst step to establishing a new success story in the
form of Unknown Mortal orchestra a band that would be labeled as
one to watch from the get go.
the departure wasnt easy, swapping a fnancially and emotional secure
life in aotearoa for the american Dream, but once he felt like he could
pay the bills, it was time to think about his next step musically.
having no bandmates and no label meant i could just make music exactly
the way i was hearing it in my head, he says. there are a few junk shops
that sell old reel-to-reel tape recorders and stuff like that. i started buying
them so i could use them for this record i was thinking about.
ruban harnessed the power of the internet and released Ffunny Ffrends
on his Bandcamp profle in the spring of 2010. the track came with no
further information or mention of who created it, but it wasnt long before
a relentless social network hunt began to fnd the creator. ruban came
forward and claimed the track as Unknown Mortal orchestras.
i spent a couple of weeks trying to decide whether id even go down this
rabbit hole, he says of the rise of UMo. i decided that i would. i threw
a band together and rehearsed them, got picked up by one of the biggest
booking agencies in the world [the Windish agency] before id even
played a show, and then toured solidly for two years.
Joining forces with Jake portrait and Greg rogove, the band became
known for its immersive psychedelic quality, which was present on the
debut self-titled album. With their forthcoming sophomore album II (due
for release in February 2013), ruban says he wanted to go back to basics.

ALBUM OUT: Feb 2013
JUst BecaUse yoU cant see it, doesnt mean its not there. such is the
mantra for Minuits paul Lodge.
the three-piece band, known for their electronic funk and beats, have
been known to rock out hard producing one of the countrys best live
acts consistently for over 10 years. But in a genre that doesnt require
guitars or drum like a traditional band, it can be misleading to think
their music is ft for cD consumption only.
i really do regard us as a live band, says paul. With ruth [carr] out
frontshe lets it all go. she often gets bleeding lips and chipped teeth
from the mic. there was an era when we would have to put a sock on the
mic cos she kept banging her teeth. she couldnt afford the dentists bill
so she would just fle her teeth down with fngernail fles. if you see her
up close, check out her front teeth.
its the live and organic nature of Minuit that the band set out to capture
on their ffth album Last Night You Saw This Band.
its the idea of going out to see a live band not necessarily us but you
go out and you are surprised, inspired, just blown away. hearing a band
live is better than listening to it at home so its just an ode to live acts for
slogging it out and playing a great performance.
Unlike previous albums where the three have been studio bound, or paul
and ryan Beehre have taken rhythms and sounds to ruth to which she
adds lyrics, this album had a more natural process, born on the shores of
rarotonga.
ruth was working in raro for a few months and put ideas into a
dictaphone, says paul. ryan and i had to try to decode all these crazy
messages, and the album kind of came from that. she would just hit
record; some of them are on the back of a motorbike, some you can hear
the rain or kids playing. it was a bit of fun.
For a band that was born from experimentation in the heart of nelson
nearly 10 years ago, the band has seen the scene develop in many ways,
including the growth of drum n bass and dubstep as a more mainstream
genre. But paul says the idea of keeping the energy alive as a live band
has always been their goal regardless of audience familiarity with
electronic sounds.
people, audiences, are very cool. they get music. often people will
try to explain music, but whenever you turn up to a gig, audiences
understand it because in the end its all about performance and energy
on the night so whether youre doing it as a band or playing electronic it
is irrelevant. on the night, its a blast.

Far Cry 3 is a frst person shooter. Your
character, Jason, must shoot and stab his way
through an army of pirates spread all over the
Rook Islands (a tiny archipelago somewhere in
the Southeast Asian part of the South Pacifc)
in order to save his gang of plucky young
adventure tourist friends.
Jason must do this fairly silently because he is
heavily outnumbered. He sneaks around stabbing
pirates in the neck and dragging their bodies
where they wont be found. To help him out, he
can craft things, by collecting plants and animals
skins from different parts of the islands. He can
also go on hunting excursions or assassination
missions for more XP. Oh, and he can do side
missions that involve, among other things,
sharpshooting and poker.
Jason is aided in his mission by the islands
local tribe the Rakyats. While the Rook Islands
are clearly asiatic, the Rakyat are Maori. It was
quite pleasant hearing a New Zealand accent
and the occasional kia ora or kei te pai. Jason
is adopted by the tribe and given a traditional
Rakyat tatau (tattoo). The tatau grows with the
more skills Jason learns. Apparently the Rakyats
tatau are the sort you fnd on people who drink
Woody and Coke from the can.
Story grumbling aside, running, jumping,
shooting, and sneaking about its all very fun.
Rook Island itself is incredibly beautiful and the
fora and fauna do set it apart. While taking time
out to explore the island, I relaxed by swimming
with a group of sea turtles. It was actually very
serene, until the shark came of nowhere and
attacked me, which caused me to yell and leap
from my seat.
The stealth raids on pirate camps are also a huge
amount of fun. Scouting frst with your camera
gives you special tracking vision, though make sure
you get track everyone, including the dogs, before
starting. Nothing worse than having your cover
blown by having a pitbull attached to your arm.

Michael Mcintyres presents a special Christmas
edition of his Comedy Roadshow with some of the
biggest stars in the world of comedy. Joining Michael
on stage in this festive extravaganza is Jack Dee,

David Mitchell and Rhod Gilbert.
Hero at 30,000 Feet takes an average Joe on an
extraordinary psychological journey which will
culminate with him facing a life-changing decision of
whether to take control of a Boeing 737 packed with

Its Boxing Day in the Brockman household and Santa

Mum and Dad try to maintain some festive spirit, Ben

the case for pirated music and Karen is busy writing
New Years resolutions, sort of.
This documentary takes us behind the scenes of one
of the more innovative musical partnerships. Filmed
since the moment of their conception, Bananaz

gives a never-before-seen account of the working
relationship of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.
He left behind a comedy legacy in his wake, but there

The acclaimed Oscar-winning fick put Tom Cruise in
the spotlight for his dramatic performance of Charlie

This is the movie that defned the childhood of many
a young guy or gal born in the 80s. The Princess Bride
is a classic fairy tale with a postmodern twist. Its got
everything: adventure, fghting, true love and a giant
man. Not to mention classic lines that can be applied
to everyday life. Inconceivable!
Come into the tiny world of the Borrowers, a family
of people(?)... who live under the foorboards of a
beautiful villa. This is a fast-paced tale of adventure
that is funny and thrilling, while at its heart is a
message about the importance of family and our
relationships with the people we love.
Prime brings fans the ultimate Christmas present
with the Doctor Who special! A chilling menace
threatens Earth and an unorthodox young governess,
Clara, calls on the Doctor for help. But hes in
mourning, reclusive and determined not to engage in
the problems of the universe. What to do?
In the same vein as Wild Things and pretty much
anything Neve Campbell was in in the early 90s, this
over-the-top, guilty pleasure of a flm is all about sex,
magic and screwing your friends over. A newcomer
to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of
outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft.
When hes not divorcing Katie Holmes or featuring
in lawsuits against the media every fve minutes,
Tom Cruise makes movies. Although there was much
controversy about his height for this role, the trailer
shows he might be the perfect man to tackle the
coveted role of Lee Childs Jack.
Actress Alison Pill heads an cast in this realist comedy
from Woody Allen. The story is told in four separate
vignettes: a clerk who wakes up to fnd himself a
celebrity, an architect who travels to the street he
once lived, a young couple on their honeymoon, and a
funeral director with a talent for singing.
Disney, after how many years, gets out of their funk
and creates their frst African-American princess.
In New Orleans, Tiana dreams of opening her own
restaurant in New Orleans. During a party for Prince
Naveen, Dr Facilier turns the visiting royal into a frog.
This doco looks at Neil and how he brought Johnny
Marr, Phil Selway, Ed OBrien, Sebastian Steinberg, Lisa
Germano and his brother into one room to expand
the concept at an Auckland studio.
Lifelong friends Wilf, Reggie and Cissy are residents
of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers.
Every year on Giuseppe Verdis birthday, the residents
unite to give a concert and raise funds. But things
derail when Jean (Dame Maggie Smith) a former
grande dame of opera falls on hard times.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Robin
Williams was in his prime and legitimately funny. That
said, Mrs Doubtfre is without a doubt a classic tale of

Whats the ethos of your store/clothing line?
If you like it, wear it. If it makes you happy then it
doesnt matter that its a dinosaur suit.
Which historical fgure had some wicked style?
Im a huge fan of Cleopatra shes my go-to for
dress up parties. Gold, accessories and a wee bit
sexy cant go wrong.
What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo?
Alexa Chung. Shut the gate, all-time favourite! I
like celebrities who have a signature look and just
embellish and evolve over time. Youre probably
thinking Madonna, Im thinking more like Kate
Moss fur and tight pants.
Societys biggest fashion faux-pas?
Nike trainers and chinos. Step too far. Its Sneans
people!
Whats the must-have look this spring?
Something old, something new, something
borrowed, something blue. Teaming your
favourite vintage print or striped tee with some
navy and youre away laughing. It isnt hard and
as stated you can borrow items from your mates,
do a clothes swap.
Colours/patterns big this season?
Print on print with a bold colour to break it up.
Colour on colour with a print to break it up. An
easy recipe for success.
What are the essentials for a mans wardrobe?
Anything that fts well looks good. Ill-ftting
chinos/jeans really grind my gears. That paired
with good shoes and checked shirt too easy.
Come to Clash - Ill help you!
What are the essentials for a ladys wardrobe?
Striped tees, dungarees and fat form sandals. Oh
and a bit of white-on-white (done well, please).
See Georgia Alice for inspiration.
Everyone should own at least one good
A pair of Docs or Creepers, team them with a
pretty dress or shorts and a T-shirt and youre
automatically in the edgy fashion fle (in my
opinion).
Hyphenate three words to describe your style:
This is where my friends and I would joke and say
salty-as-fuck. But for honestys sake I would say
easy-fresh-approachable.

SHIT WORTH DOING
OUR SALES TEAM
is expanding
in all areas
At 10 yeArs old, what kinds of things are you expected to be able to
accomplish? tie your shoes: defnitely. read and write? Without a doubt.
But what if youre one of the biggest New years eve festivals in New
Zealand what is expected of you then?
For rhythm & Vines organisers, they have been asking themselves the
same question. How do you make a music festival bigger and better each
year, make it stand out and keep the crowds of over 30,000 party goers
young and older coming back for more?
What began as an idea over a few drinks in Dunedin quickly turned into
one of the biggest events in the country. Barely 2000 people attended the
inaugural event, with just a few local artists on the bill. It wasnt until
2006 when they secured their frst international act scottish DJ Mylo
and sold out the vines to 15,000 people that the events growth started to
take shape.
For their 10th birthday, r&V has a diverse line-up, with a range of
local and international artists such as tame Impala, Kimbra, Mark
ronson, Home Brew, Netsky and Chase and status ensuring all tastes
are catered to and people are sure to discover something theyve never
heard before.
think the sounds are top notch? they are also expanding the production
visually. the site will be taken over by lavish structures, installations,
projected imagery and an array of lighting effects. Also new this year is
the rhythm rider, a mobile DJ sound system that will move around the
site. the peak of the production teams efforts will be seen on December
31, with a spectacular freworks display marking r&Vs 10th midnight
countdown.
those who have been before know a successful festival experience is a
combination of things site, sound, sun and soothing sessions on the day
after the night before. But most importantly, its about the sound. And
the artists know this to be true just as much as the guests they want to
give the crowd the best damned welcome to the new year they can.
Headline act the Presets recently released their latest album Pacifca
and they were obviously thinking of summer. Drummer Kim Moyes says
the album is a diverse mix of upbeat festival tunes with more melodic,
chilled out beats taking the audience on an emotion rollercoaster.
It cant just be like full on from the beginning to the end and thats why
it takes you a bit on a journey.
While it is their frst time to the event, Kim says the band has heard it is
a really great festival and is looking forward to being surprised. When
asked to give readers a taste of what to expect, he says, Its just the best
way to start a new year.
Its me and Julian [Hamilton] on stage. Weve got like some stuff, like
electronic gear. We got a drum kit and weve got a big lighting rig. Its just
a really fun festival party.
International act Netsky (also known as Belgian producer Boris Daenen)
is back for the third time to r&V. When asked where his best gig in the
world has been keeping in mind this talented 23-year-old has played all
over the world he says New Zealand without hesitation.
He has fond memories of his r&V experience, adding that when
he played very late one year (a 6am set), he had the most incredible
experience as the sun came up.
Its one of the frst places the sun is coming up on New years Day, he
says. Its just a cool experience for me, defnitely something different
after touring in the european summer and all around europe. they are
never like in the middle of the vines or anything. they are always like
close to the big cities and its always a bit of a jungle and its just really
nice to get away from it.
After 12 years and four albums, Lincoln Barrett aka High Contrast has
brought a whole new generation to the genre and injected a new kind of
funk into it along the way. With spy, Logistics and Cameron Crook also
on the bill, High Contrast headlines the Hospitality stage at r&V. Its the
frst time he has been joined by his Hospital records label mates at the
festival so is there any rivalry to play the best set?
Haha! I think theres always a little friendly rivalry between us, but
we all get on very well. you know, itll be good to go out and play for
you guys, having the whole team of us and I think weve all kind of got
our own sound going on as well. so, I think that will be a nice variety
between us all with the sets.
so looking at all they have achieved at just 10 years old, is r&V learning
and developing at their level? Id say judging by their current progress,
its at an accelerated rate with no chance of slowing down.

Put AsIDe your jobs, hassles, smart phones, responsibilities and
come along to the exodus Festival 2012. set at the scenic te tumu
Kaituna reserve, Papamoa Beach, exodus is Aotearoas biggest-ever
reggae New years eve party. Last year was such a success that this year
it is going to be even bigger and better. two stages, 19 bands, six DJs, and
13 glorious hours will help you ring in the New year with peace, love, and
the movement of jah people.
Heading up this superb line-up are a whos-who of local reggae and roots
artists. First and foremost are the legendary Herbs genre survivors and
a self-made household name. Herbs have been enriching New Zealand
music and livening up ourselves since their formation in 1979 and their
debut performance at exodus is going to be off the charts. they are
members of the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame, have had 10 top 20
singles stretching as far back as the 80s, and have performed with the
likes of Dave Dobbyn, uB40, taj Mahal, Neil young, and tina turner.
Joining them this year will be raglans own Cornerstone roots, known
for their intense live shows and their infectious conscious message.
exodus is also proud to introduce Paua to our shores, currently based
in Australia, for a far-too-rare trip home to show off their wares. Where
theres a reggae festival you can count on Waikatos Katchafre to show
up and create a beautiful scene. When theyre not touring overseas,
showing the world what Kiwi music is all about, they are thrilling
crowds the length and breadth of this land.
As well as established veterans, exodus features an amazing selection
of up-and-comers. Come and see the likes of 1814, south Aucklands

For A BAND that used to play naked on stage a fair bit, the red Hot

taking that next step on their road to modern legend status light-
years beyond anything they had ever dreamt of back in their smooth-
cheeked youth.
the LA four-piece, who innovated their own brand of punkish-funk-
rock, have booked themselves a trip to Auckland in 2013, ready to show
Kiwi audiences how much theyve learnt during 30-odd years of genre-
mashing.
And its not hard to remember the Chilis last gig in New Zealand just
rewind back to 2007, when Anthony Kiedis and co were the frst show to
open the nations freshest, big-act venue Vector Arena.
Come Mon 14 Jan, rHCP will be back at Vector, plastering those walls
with cuts from albums such as Mothers Milk, Californication, and their
classic, balls-out sensation: Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Also in the spotlight will be material from their latest LP, 2011s Im With
You. the album spent time at the top of the New Zealand charts, was a
number-one hit in the uK and in 15 other countries around the world.
something a bit different on both the Im With You songs and Januarys
concert is the presence of guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who took over as
rHCP axe man (from John Frusciante) in 2009/2010.
