Our Growing State

As Indiana grew, it attracted settlers from other
parts of the United States and other countries. Many
immigrants came from Ireland, Germany, and
Switzerland. They settled Indiana first in the south,
then in the central part of the state, and finally into
the northernmost region. Farms and cities quickly
grew throughout our state.
In the mid-1800s, the African American
population in Indiana was small. Many were free, but
still suffered from unequal treatment. The 1816
Constitution of Indiana outlawed slavery, but for
several years, some people still kept slaves. This
happened because in some areas the laws against
slavery were ignored and not enforced.
American Indians continued to lose their land in
Indiana. Many were forced to leave the state and go
to far-off reservations. The Potawatomi were led on a
march to a new homeland that would later be named
the Trail of Death because 42 died along the way.

Many of them were children. The Miami, however,

stayed in Indiana for much longer.
