1. An air refrigeration system working on Bell column cycle operates between 1 bar and 7 bar. The temperature maintained in the cooler is 13oC. The air leaving the compressor is cooled to 37oC. The compression follows the law PV1.3=Constant and expansion follows the law PV1.35=Constant. Find (a) theoretical COP, (b) mass flow rate of air required to manufacture ice at 0oC when water supplied at 30oC at a rate of 5 tons/day, (c) power required to run the plant. (Ans: (a) 1.54, (b) 20.12 kg/min, (c) 15.7 kW). 2. An air refrigeration system of 5 TR capacity works between 1 bar and 5.2 bar. The air enters the compressor at 16oC and enters the expander at 41oC. Assuming compression and expansion are isentropic, find (a) mass flow rate of air, (b) COP of the system, (c) diameter of compressor and expander if the common stroke is 20 cm and both are running at 240 rpm. (Ans: (a) 11.28 kg/min, (b) 1.67, (c) Dc=70.5 cm and De=58 cm) 3. An air refrigerator working on Bell column cycle takes air into the compressor at 1 bar and 5oC. It is compressed in the compressor to 5 bar and cooled to 25 0C at the same pressure. It is further expanded in the expander to 1 bar and discharged to take the cooling load. The isentropic efficiency of compressor=85% The isentropic efficiency of expander=90% Find: (a) refrigeration capacity of the system if the air circulated is 40kg/min (b) cop of system, (c) kW capacity of the motor required to run compressor. (Ans: (a) 12.95 TR, (b) 0.828, (c) 57.7 Kw) 4. Air refrigeration system works between 1 bar and 8 bar. The temperature of air entering the compressor is 6.70C and the temperature of air before entering the expansion cylinder is 26.70C. Expansion and compression flows the law pv1.35=COP of the system. (Ans: 1.27) 5. The capacity of the refrigerator working on reversed Carnot cycle is 280 tonnes (TR) when operating between -10oC and 25oC. Determine: (i) Quantity of ice produced at -5oC within 24 hours when water is supplied at 200C. (ii) Minimum power required (in kW). Assume latent heat of ice as 335 kJ/kg, Cp(water)=4.18 kJ/kg-oC, Cp(ice)=1 kJ/kg-oC (Ans: 219.5 tons/day, 185.2Kw) 6. The capacity of refrigerator is 600 tons when working between -5oC and 20oC. find the mass of ice produced within 24 hours when water is supplied at 10 0C. Also find the minimum kW required to run the system. (Ans: 195.9 kW).
Note: assume =1.4, Cp(air)= 1 kJ/kg-oC, (for all the questions in which values are not given)
