Big boom in mango export likely

By PB Varma LUCKNOW: The state is set for a big boom in mango export. Against a mere six tonnes of mango exported last year, this year the government is targeting 500 tonnes of export. While this year mango production is expected to be 40-42 lakh tonnes, about five lakh tonnes would be available for export. A Dubai-based company has already offered to purchase 2,000 tonnes of mango if the subsidy is increased from 25 to 50 per cent for two to three years, to make mango prices viable in West Asia. The matter would be placed before the state Cabinet for a decision. The company has also offered to provide a marketing network in West Asia. Talking to The Times of India, principal secretary, agricultural export promotion, agricultural industries, horticulture and food processing, Rai Singh, said that to ensure quality control, ISO 9000 training programmes were being organised by the UP State Horticulture Marketing Federation in collaboration with National Agriculture Marketing Institute, Jaipur, and Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), Union ministry of commerce. Specialists to certify the quality of mango had also been posted in Lucknow. Earlier, exporters had to send their mango to Delhi for this certificate. He said with the help of National Horticulture Board, facilities of pre-cooling, grading and sorting of mango for export had been created here. NAFED had constructed a packing house at Dubagga Mandi here, which would be available from May 31. "The board has made arrangements for attractive packaging on which it will give 50 per cent subsidy," he said. Singh said exporters had been provided with loan facility through commercial banks. If required, the Export and Import Bank of India would provide refinance. NABARD was also prepared to finance major mango export projects, he said. The government is providing 25 per cent of the air freight or Rs 20 per kg, whichever is less, as subsidy. Brand promotion incentives for dussehri, chausa and langara would be provided at the rate of Rs 5 per kg. The Railways is providing special facilities to transport mango

consignments to Delhi and Mumbai while the civil aviation department would airlift them at subsidised rates. For West Asia, direct flights from Lucknow to Sharjah would be utilised. Singh said he was trying to get a daily service to Sharjah.
