Formal Proposal

Title of my magazine: I am going to call my magazine Indie. I think this name suits the magazine because it tells the audience the genre and gives them an idea of what will be inside. The word indie has connotations of being unique and individual which is what I would like my magazine to be seen as. Choice of genre: I have chosen to make an indie rock magazine because I am interested in it and I like the bands/artists that are in that genre. I have also researched Q magazine which gave me an insight into what sort of things are in indie rock magazines so I have a better understanding of what I have to put in my magazine. My target audience: Indie rock music magazines are usually targeted at males, however I would like to change this and target both males and females. I would like to aim my magazine at people aged between 16 and 20 because they are the main age group that listen to indie rock music and they would be more likely to recognise artists/bands that are on the front cover. Initial ideas for Front Cover: When I asked my target audience what their preferred magazine front cover was, they chose this one. On my front cover the image I would like to use is a black and white close up of a woman. I am going to use a woman so it appeals to both genders. It shows that women also listen to indie rock music as its mainly dominated by males. I will use one or two bold colours to attract the attention of the audience and use these colours as the house style of the magazine. I will have a couple of copy lines, but not too many so the image isnt overpowered by text. Initial ideas for Contents Page: I would like to make my contents page similar to this one. I think the small number of images draws the audiences attention to the articles rather than focusing on the images. There will be 3-4 images on my magazine with some being posed and some natural shots. The images will reflect what articles are in my magazine. The type of articles that my target audience would like to see were gig guides, upcoming events such as festivals, general information about the indie rock music scene and information about particular artists/bands. I will continue the colours that I used on the front cover into the magazine.

Initial ideas for my double page spread: I would like my article to look like this one. I will have one A4 page filled with an image of the person that was on the front cover and the other A4 page with the written article on it. My target audience would like an interview with the artist/band as the main article because they will find out their opinions on certain things. Initial ideas for photographs: I would like the photograph on the front cover of my magazine to be a black and white close up of a female. This will attract a female audience as well as male. The photographs on the contents page of the magazine will be of both males and females. I would like to have 3-4 photos on the contents page, some being natural and some posed. I would like one image on my double page spread. This will be of the same person that is on the front cover but will be a completely different photograph and this time it will be in colour.
