Law enforcers thwart yet another provocation against Togliattiazot A media war on Togliattiazot (ToAZ) rages on, instigated, according to experts consensus opinion, by Dmitry Mazepin, the core shareholder and chairman of Uralchem, an integrated Russian chemicals company. Some media wrote about a protest rally by Togliatti activists against Togliatiazot in May, where alleged city residents demanded that the company be taken to task, while in fact there had been no rally. All the same, moderators of the rally recorded a video for distribution over the Internet. In June, the Russian print media outlets ran a number of stories about Togliattiazots environmental violations and resulting fines, referencing The Wall Street Journal as their source. However, Kate Dobbin, Doe Jones Corporate Communications Director, has told a P.S. correspondent that these stories contained false information. The Wall Street Journal has not written anything about Togliattiazot operations in the past two years, Kate Dobbin said. Regional Duma Deputy Alexander Drobotov has told reporters that the attempts to discredit ToAZ are explained by steady growth in the companys earnings. Minority shareholders in Togliattiazot are spending huge amounts of money on their attempts to tarnish the current management. In this kind of environment, Togliattiazot clearly needs protection, including political protection. Regional Duma Chairman Viktor Sazonov has seen regional governor Nikolai Merkushkin, coming up with a coordinated defense strategy, and establishing a working group to address this issue. I am sure we can defend the company, Alexander Drobotov told the media. Alexander Drobotov, Deputy, Regional Duma of the Samara Region: You may have noticed that some media outlets have been actively covering ToAZ operations over the past six months, which are allegedly harmful for Togliatti, focusing on environmental issues, the bad state of disrepair of the company, and so on. This whole information war was unleashed after the current owners of Togliattiazot refused to sell the company to some very well-off suitors. In fact, Togliattiazot is spending very large amounts of money on environmental safety, on upgrading its equipment, which requires many billions of Rubles. The campaign to discredit the Togliatti-based chemicals giant. As an additional twist in this smear campaign, ToAZ is completing construction of a huge sea terminal at Temryuk. This port will be able to handle other cargo types as well as ammonia. This terminal, which has cost several hundred million US dollars to build, and which effectively opens up a new access route to Europe, and is currently at least as valuable as all other assets of ToAZ. ToAZs steadily increasing earnings and the Temryuk terminal are causing potential buyers to be aggressive in their attempts to influence the company personnel and the local community with their mass propaganda, which may well be followed by some provocation. ToAZ is in need of political protection, we realize this very well.
